10yr old Michael Jackson bested Smokey Robinson's 'Who's Lovin' You' (and Berry Gordy concurred at MJ's funeral), and Chocolate Genius bested Marvin Gaye here. Just perfection and a lesson to always Respect where the lyric should be taking U, sonically, and in tempo, dynamic and arrangement. Absolutely PERFECT.

Tessa Thompson's father for those who still haven't realized it yet. Shame this brother ended up flying way below radar all this time because his music catalog has been among the most emotionally-rewarding of any artist I've heard so far to date. Came on the scene around the same time his then-labelmate Prince (RIP) started blowing up with that commercial juggernaut known as the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack and as a result he ended up getting lost in the shuffle, unfortunately. Glad I ended up finding him, though! Nicely-flipped Motown cover as well, never heard it done like that before either... ;-)

I've looked for this on his albums and can't find it. Does it only exist for the movie soundtrack?

Wow. I love the way he owns this and slows the tempo. I have a friend named John Cody who made a record with Larry Klein and I heard Cody slow Little Red Corvette and it had the same kind of unorthodox effect. Brilliant take on a Motown classic, brings the grit out in the lyrics. It's as good as Gaye's version for its own reasons. Bravo.

It's rare for a cover to totally open up a song, but that's what Chocolate Genius does here. It's all the more remarkable that he gets so fully inside a song - to reveal even more of its beauty and mystery -- that was already performed so brilliantly by dear, wonderful Marvin Gaye. S t r a n g e.
