I dunno. There’s some really nasty comments on here that are pretty unfair. On the one hand, if Cheryl definitely did assault that toilet attendant and with no provocation, then she absolutely deserved her punishment and the negative press. I’d go as far as to say her punishment was very lenient. The only true penalty she got was the negative comments and dislike she received at the time. But….I think it’s a bit unfair to STILL flame her 20 years later. She was young and stupid, riding a wave of new found fame and fortune. Of course it doesn’t excuse her crime but I can sort of see where her head would’ve been in a place of misplaced confidence and even arrogance. All of the bad press, the death threats, the calls to have her kicked out of Girls Aloud. It had the right effect, it humiliated and humbled Cheryl a lot. And in her defence, she was genuinely sorry for the incident in later years and still expressed shame over it. People change. I don’t think Cheryl should be judged for something from over 20 years ago. She faced the consequences and owned up to her actions. She can’t do much more than that. I think people are being overly unfair.

Wow! What an embarrassing video. It looks like something from Alabama in 1965. The way they talk about the victim, the presenter trying to comfort her despite knowing she's the aggressor, the awkward laughs. It 's like they are living in a different time in history. I have a colleague at work who knew her back in the day. She said she was quite a scrapper in her youth, often getting into fights after drinking shit like diamond white, at the Metrocentre, with a bunch of other girls. But then, there was a lot of poverty back then and not much to do. I guess the fight in the toilets was a carry over from that. I don't believe she's racist and she was young. People grow up and change, especially if given opportunities like she had. I don't think that should be held over her for life, especially if she's not behaved that way since.

@@sammurray327 '' Plenty of men have done shit like that and hardly anyone bats an eye. '' I struggle to think of any men from a clean-cut pop band who is a role model for kids attacking a black toilet worker and witnesses saying there was racism and them getting away with it. Take That, 1 direction, Boyzone, etc were generally always on their best behaviour. Robbie William only really went off the rails after Take That and having said that he never did harm to others-more himself. ''It's almost expected of boys, especially back then.'' What does that even mean? Brian Harvey[a man] boasted of taking drugs back in 97 and was fired from East 17[a youth-targeted band]. He was also crucified by the media and it ruined the band's image across the media. I'd consider what Cheryl did as much worse as he only talked of his like for drugs-yea it's bad but condoning drugs isn't a crime like her conviction. Again, I struggle to think of any male celeb predominately marketed at kids carrying out such an act of brutality. ''It was only the big deal it was because she was female, there was a racial element to it (found not guilty of that)'' She actually was not found 'not guilty' of that. The bouncer who had heard the racist abuse had spoken to the press before the court so her defense got it thrown out for contempt of court. It was suggested in court (by the defense no less) that the PR persuaded the bouncer to sell a story to the newspaper (probably for financial gain was their angle), which he did do. This allowed the court to dismiss the bouncer's witness statement as contempt of court and the evidence couldn't be used. And no it was not a big deal because she was a woman- had any male member of youth targetted bands like s club 7, 1 direction, etc done similar they'd have been crucified.

@@sammurray327 ''But then, there was a lot of poverty back then and not much to do.'' Sounds like excuse-making or victim-blaming. Like when people blame sexual assault on how women dressed or how they flirted and how the men couldn't possibly have helped themselves. Eh no-Poverty is no excuse for being a thug and what does ''not much to do'' even mean? Cities and towns full of bowling alleys, cinemas, arcades, etc are full of crime and there is plenty to do. What exactly are you suggesting there should be for them to do? She lived in Newcastle-a city, lots more t do there than loving in many of the small towns and villages of the UK. ''I don't believe she's racist and she was young. People grow up and change, especially if given opportunities like she had. I don't think that should be held over her for life, especially if she's not behaved that way since.'' I think you are missing the point. She was convicted of assault. She has never apologised for this. She has always claimed self-defense (despite the courts not agreeing with her) and has always laughed it off and sort of tried to come across as some sort of victim (poor me, I was celebrating my number one and didn't know what a toilet attendant was:cry:). It's very hard for people to let it go when she shows no remorse for it and still claims self-defense, without explaining why it was self-defense. She laughs it off as a drunken altercation and she says that she will teach her kids to do the same thing, which is fine (self defense) but until she can explain in detail why what she did was justified, some people will always think of her as the drunk girl, who high on her own ego, lashes out at the wrong person. Cheryl was convicted of assault and until she explains otherwise, her claims of self defense sound hollow. Her detractors don't bring up her mistake because she has done her time and moved on, they bring it up because she has the image of a sweetheart, who won't accept responsibility for something she did and something she laughs off every time she is asked about it. If she was asked and she said "yes I was drunk and I acted in a way that wasn't right, I apologised, did my time, have never done it again and would always say that Violence is Never the Answer" then I think Cheryl could have won a lot of respect. As it stands, still promoting the whole "self-defense despite the conviction and this is what I would teach me kids to do", just makes her look like an angry chav. Self defense, from my angle, is when another person does or says something that would cause you to retaliate/ defend yourself. Cheryl has claimed self defense but brushes it off as an altercation. Surely if it was really self-defense, she would be able to give a clear account of why she left a woman with severe injuries and she came out unharmed?

She didn't get away with it she was charged with assault and carried out the punishment given her, whatever that was. For a first offence assault doesn't always mean spending time in prison if that is what you mean by 'getting away with it'. She was accused of committing a racially motivated attack and cleared of it. She was the victim in the sense of that accusation. She was cleared on the racism charges but the woman still pursued it for financial gain, hoping to sue her. That's why she's playing the victim. Although I do have to say the first time I watched this I wondered if Cheryl has a hint of sociopath in her... I love her but still not sure haha! At the time it seemed that at the point where she was being sued the press and public warmed to her, what with her only being 19 years old and at that stage unlikely to have seen huge profits from being a popstar. I personally would rather be punched in the face than accused of being a racist. I also find her family background is a relevant factor in assessing her lack of remorse for the woman she punched. Her brother was sent to a young offenders institute for stabbing someone when he was 13 and she was only 11. That's why she can't understand why it was made into such a big deal. Her perspective of being taught to stand up for herself means no remorse if that's what she felt like she was doing, or if she felt threatened. People are still talking about an incident which she more than redeemed herself from through her kindness to others throughout the rest of her career, that means she didn't get away with it.

She wouldn't have been rich enough to pay off all the witnesses, the judge and the jury. Plus surely by now if there was a big conspiracy someone would have said something. Also marrying someone for a PR stunt 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Did she remain celibate for 4/5 years or did she employ gigolos and prostitutes? Then she dated a dancer that didn't interest the public much. She got in to a scrap with a black female toilet attendant. From that moment her projected global career was literally over. Sure, she had the PR and money to see it through and managed to continue on for 10 years. But the massive global success that was projected for her was dead in the water from that moment. If only it were a white female toilet attendant... It could have all been so much different Cheryl. All you needed to do back then was stand proud, be proud of who you are, what your ancestors built, the sacrifices they made to help build the greatest civilization in human history - western civilization. Reject the lefts hatred and double and triple down on who you are and where you came from. After the trial though the people sensed your defeatism, they could see through the veil - you let them down. We need champions they thought silently, not fake heroins who buckle and surrender at the first sign of trouble. You embarrassed your people Cheryl, not by your actions in the toilet, but by your massive virtue signaling. You got in a fight lass, that was all that happened and look what they did to you. Even now the Guardian still mentions how Cheryl beat up a black toilet attendants. It doesn't matter you ended up marrying and having a child with a black guy. Nope, they could see through that as could the country. But you backed and tried to be part of the left establishment and it predictably failed. And in doing that you lost your working class base. Today you're is a single mother in you''re late 30's. That glorious career almost a distant memory. You're wax figurine at Tussaud's removed. No doubt you will appear on some save me from the Island show as you struts around showing as much flesh as is legal along with other C listers hoping for a comeback. But you still had a wildly successful career, you will never need to give a second thought to money for the rest of your life. You still live a life the vast majority of us working class whites could only ever dream of. But ultimately it doesn't matter how dark skinned you attempt to make yourself look (and we noticed Cheryl), the left will always prod you with that stick. To us, the working classes you will always be the white girl from Newcastle who virtue signaled so hard the majority of us ended up not caring.

We’ll never know the definitive truth. Sophie blamed Cheryl, Cheryl blamed Sophie. Unfortunately I do suspect Nicola lied to get her sympathy. In any case, Cheryl was stupid to go out getting pissed and landing herself in this awkward situation. Big deal, they were celebrating going to No.1 in the charts. Doesn’t mean you go and get shit faced to that extent. In any case it wasn’t a good look for Cheryl and I can’t really blame people for disliking her after that. That being said, the accusation she’s just a common chavvy lout is a bit unfair. I highly doubt any of the other four girls were intimidated by Cheryl. She’s foolish yes, stupid definitely. But I don’t think she’s an inherently violent woman, I think people just see a working class Geordie and immediately brand her white trash. Which is nasty.
