Anyone an idea which music inspired Howard Shore to this song? Someone already mentioned ancient Byzantine Christian songs, I'm curious about more

What makes this sadder is this is a song sung in Sindarin by Silvan Elves (according to google) which means they go to journey to a land which isnt their home, for Middle Earth was their home, so its even sadder knowing they must leave to a land they've never been and leave their ancestral homes.

I love this song! It's so ethereal! When you close your eyes, and let your mind wander, it does give a sense of going to distance shores. It's just marvelous!

Shouldn't they move in the other direction? From their point of view? They are supposed to go west to the grey havens.

In Germanic mythology "Elves" are the spirits of our ancestors, Them leaving middle earth might represent Tolkien's observation that western earopeans no longer worship or even think about our ancestors the way we used to. Like a concept leaving the collection conciousness of a people.

'You, too, have come where the dim tides are hurled Upon the wharves of sorrow, and heard ring The bell that calls us on; the sweet far thing. Beauty grown sad with its eternity Made you of us, and of the dim grey sea. Our long ships loose thought-woven sails and wait, For God has bid them share an equal fate; And when at last, defeated in His wars, They have gone down under the same white stars, We shall no longer hear the little cry Of our sad hearts, that may not live nor die.'

It’s “wander” not “wonder”. Probably just a typo, like spelling beyond beyong. Still, one of my favorite moments of The Fellowship of the Ring. Yes. Elves, sir! I’d dearly love to see them…

I wonder what Varda thought of this breathtaking hymn (among many other Elvish ones) to her. They're singing about her light in their past, but a life in ever-fading ages. A life they'll have to leave. Arda was their home for so long, it must feel like being reborn.
