Just got back from seeing this and it was refreshing and unique. Was smiling at the effort throughout the movie. Some things were seen coming a mile away, but the whole of the project was original and subverts most expectations.

longlegs did such an incredible job subverting my expectations and he genuinely terrified me, but 8mm is so criminally underrated as a movie, i feel like it never gets the love or mentions it deserves

He’s not a Deadite, but he is a revenant. And even tying him into Necronomicon lore from Lovecraft (and the Evil Dead series, which borrowed it) he’s some other kind of entity - hey, there’s a lot of bad magic in that book. Also, the single best evidence that he’s not a Deadite is that he never talks, while by contrast you can’t get a Deadite to shut the hell up.

Just got out of seeing it. Movie was ok. Not a bad movie by any means but what it’s trying to be doesn’t punch up to the classics. Had some decent “creepy” moments but definitely not a horror imo. Solid 6.8/10

day one was okay for me. Lupita is great as always. Writing a post apocalyptic movie from the perspective of a hospice patient is ambitious for sure. I feel the movie probably could have excelled on it's own without the Quiet Place setting. Meaning, her story, motives, and struggles could have been shown without the specifics of the Quiet Place universe. So it feels like a decent story tacked onto the quiet place ruleset, and it doesn't work well for me. I think back to the 2013 film These Final Hours and how the imminent destruction of the world acted as a backdrop to the setting instead of the foreground. Day One feels like it trying to do that. I think making the day one invasion a little less explicit, more elements of mystery as to the invasion, less action and more creepiness, all would have worked better in this film.

Maxxxine suffers from jarring tonal shifts throughout the film. In some scenes Maxine is a badass, stomping on genitals and beating up Kevin Bacon. The next scene she's running away from him. Also she is so secretive of the killings from X, but was she even at fault for the events that took place there? Would the truth around that really ruin her career? The stakes just didn't get conveyed well to me. The father villain reveal felt cheap, unwarranted and non-consequential within the context of the trilogy. Setting this up earlier in the trilogy might have been better. And yes, shot beautifully, as you mentioned.

I was unsure about watching this movie but I really enjoyed your review ! I like learning about history, esp following the lives of the common folk, so I'm defo going to watch, but maybe not today bc these types of movies stay with you for a while :'D everything you say is horrifying and i can't believe that actually happened ! It's like hansel and Gretel being inspired by real life parents having to surrender their children to the woods in the hopes they would get attacked by wild animals so they wouldn't get to experience the horrors of starvation

Ron Perlman's Hellboy was fun, bit it was hardly a perfect adaptation of the source material... not by a long shot. This weird fixation people have with those films being the bar is just weird...
@HalloweenYearRound
@HalloweenYearRound 12 күн бұрын
I don't think it's so much that people think the Perlman version was an accurate adaptation as that's the just version that is most familiar in pop culture. General audiences aren't diehard Hellboy comic book fans, so to them Perlman/Del Toro's version is the definitive Hellboy.

I’m really not on the Immaculate hype train… at all. Honestly, I thought the movie was a bit of a drag, then became a bit absurdist towards the end and almost comical (in reference to her solution to dealing with the people involved). There was one shot in the movie I really liked (her crying while dressed as Mary) but aside from that I didn’t find it visually engaging and “pregnant woman being confused” lost its charm very quickly. Also, the final scene was shocking in theory, but I feel gets talked about as though it was a lot more graphic than what we actually got to see on screen. Sydney definitely showed off her skills and cemented herself as a fantastic horror actress on this project for sure
