My dad's favorite. I can't listen to Borodin or Rimsky Korsakov without getting all choked up. I'm 70 years old now and in awe with the likes of Led Zeppelin and RTF, but the neoclassical Russian masters never fail to bring tears to my eyes.
@SpockMonroe21 күн бұрын
I don't know if Borodin was considered as such. I always considered him a romantic, but your characterization of him as neo-classic fit my unacknowledged feelings toward his work. However, some of Borodin’s works, such as his symphonic poem “In the Steppes of Central Asia”, may exhibit elements of classical influence, such as a focus on melody and harmony reminiscent of classical music. Additionally, his opera “Prince Igor” features a mix of folk and classical elements, which might be seen as a precursor to the neo-classical movement. It’s worth noting that the term “neo-classical” is often associated with composers like Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich, who were active in the early 20th century and drew heavily from classical forms and structures in their work. As a 19th-century composer, Borodin does not fit neatly into this category.

My Dad's favorite also. He just passed in late February of this year, and we played this for him on his last...well, you know. I love this piece so much, and I too get teary. I love so many of the Russian composers, and Borodin is one of my favorites.

Thank you for telling me about the shows you watch on TV. My wife and I watch PBS and will only watch British programming. The stories are great and the actors rotate their perfomances, and play different parts. Their versatility is incredible; they are better than ALL American actors. Thank you to England for enriching our lives.

Meu deus.

I love the story that the very-first time this symphony was performed publicly was for a charity event in 1813 for Austrian soldiers wounded fighting Napoleon and that it was an immediate hit -and that the soldiers and audience called for an encore of the Allegretto (13:37), instantly loving it the very first time they heard it. Which was the same reaction I suspect tens of millions of listeners if not more, in the 200 + years have had since then, the first time they heard it.

When I first heard this version in the 1980's I knew immediately that I didn't care to listen to other versions. This is a Masterpiece of Programme music by Glazunov. I listen to it only during the Christmas season as impressions of the Holidays are really powerful in many of it's passages throughout. I LOVE THIS MUSIC!

This is one of Borodins finest compositions, just the name alone sends shivers down my spine. As I listen I see in my mind the millions of square miles of empty land that has existed since time immemorial. I have tears in my eyes right now, tears of emotion that humanity can produce such a genius. I am English and for me Vaughan Williams composed emotional music like this about a very different landscape, his Fantasia on Thomas Tallis and the Lark Ascending affects me is the exact same way. Despite our MANY FAULTS humanity has managed to produce genius’s like this that transcend our SINS and let us experience the beauty that is OUR MOTHER EARTH.

@@Smin-f3h I completely agree, a WONDERFUL piece. This music does not need to be blasted out at high volume, sometimes I wait for everyone at home to go to bed and the house is quiet. Then I sit in a comfortable chair, turn the lights very low and play these pieces at a very low volume. The music will overwhelm you and take you to another place, how fortunate are we that we that such brilliant minds have evolved that can produce such beauty. Best wishes.

It was moving for me to read your words. I share everything you said. Borodin's music, as well as the music of soooo many other greats will last forever, even beyond the grave. I just imagine my soul sailing through the universe listening to The New World Symphony, Scherazade, everything by Tchaikosky, and so many others. I imagine the universe alive with this music. Talk about crying! Sail on, my friend.
