Great driving today. It’s the end of the first straight that you make a big gain from me.

you've got much too big of a flame, put on a smaller tip and get the flame a lot closer ! you're also trying to keep too much of the lug hot at once, do less preheat and then just get on with the brazing ! a good first effort, good luck with it all !

You're my life saver! I was trying to figure out how to remove the printed logos on my bike and I thought I have to go through the tedious process of spray painting my bike frame. Phew!
@37Iulian4 жыл бұрын
Why did you need flux on areas the solder won't be (all over the pipe)?
@LiamGuild4 жыл бұрын
I haven't brazed before, but at least to me it looks like you could probably run the torch quite a bit hotter, it took a while to get the joint fully heated
@chrisallen20052 жыл бұрын
If you have not brazed before how can you possibly have an opinion?

There are plenty of no-brand, no-logo plain black stems out there. Wasteful.

Perhaps. If your buying I'll take one in 90mm 6° please.

It depends on the screen print, it's not universal bit definitely worth trying first.

Did you scratch up the stem using a razorblade?
@PhilGradwell5 жыл бұрын
Not noticeably but I use my bike heavily so it gets lots of scuffs
@imstillhere66786 жыл бұрын
Nail varnish remover on a rag would have this off in seconds, plus no risk of scratches on the stem!
@PhilGradwell6 жыл бұрын
Yeah worth a go. Always try the least aggressive method first.
@graememorrison3335 жыл бұрын
Just done my Deda Zero stem too. Used some cellulose thinners from Wilko and some tissue. Took 15 minutes of judicious rubbing to take off the logos and the overkill white stripe on the top. Stem now looks a whole heap better - and no scratches either. Thanks for saving me the money I was going to drop on a new stem!

How about the frame ??? How to remove like that sticker you removed
@PhilGradwell6 жыл бұрын
Warren Fronda depends on the logo. If it is sat on top of the paint like this one you could do the same but if your logo is underneath a clear coat you won't be able to
@cmdaltctr6 жыл бұрын
Why not use wet sanding ? Maybe 2000 grit?
@duongly6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Deda produces great products but they put WAAYYYY too much logos/graphic/ad on them. And it's not like we were doing le Tour de France.

Best way to get proficient quickly is prep a bunch of clean scrap (junk bike frames would be of similar thickness) then make many braze joints until it becomes instinctive. It's like any other brazing or gas welding process in that repetition builds muscle memory. I use Shade 5 glass lenses in a standard welding helmet for best clarity (and tint selection, everyone is different). I like my Aulectro blue lens but the high dollar tinmantech lenses are even more well regarded. If you buy an expensive glass tinted lens you can also use it in goggles designed for that shape. I wear glasses and prefer my Fibre-Metal Pipeliner helmet. Cheap shit goggles sold with torch kits go in the trash when I get them in lots (I rebuild OA gear for myself). A tinted face shield, Jackson style, may be more comfortable for you and the headgear is worth having for clear shields when grinding/brushing/buffing.

Hi Kemal, yes I took a long time, it doesn't need to be so long. It was my first go but I ended up with great penetration so it's all good.

i want to ask about process from beginning. after put the legs on crown did you put any materiel between crown and legs ? or you just make them together and braze ?
@PhilGradwell8 жыл бұрын
I sanded the inside of the crown so the legs were an easy but not loose fit, then I added flux inside and out and brazed the legs in to the crown with SIFBronze 101 brazing rod. I didn't add any more brazing rod afterwards. The brazing rod only goes in between the crown and the legs to fill the gap. You can see photos and descriptions of the process here www.flickr.com/photos/philgradwell/albums/72157632370348849

Silver is mighty expensive isn't it. I just bought some ready for doing the breeze-ons and was surprised how little I got. Good luck with your brazing. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Hi Hywel. The flux is a pain isn't it. I find I'm not cooking it as much as when I started, but I haven't worried about it so much since I started soaking in hot citric acid, I really recommend trying it if you haven't already. You can read about it if you search for: soaking off the flux Phil Gradwell I can't really say whether the flux is good or not. I can only compare it to a Johnson Matthey Tenacity powder and it seems similar, and I've only tried SIFBronze 101. What's your twitter?
@PhilGradwell11 жыл бұрын
I like that one. It's one of the better fillet brazing videos on youtube. The gasfluxers seem quite common for large scale production and I know Brompton use them for fillets on their bikes. The Ariel Atom website says they are using mild steel tubing, nothing fancy. In the UK we are lucky to have Reynolds selling some of the best tubing you can buy. Bainitic Steel in the form of their 631 and 853. It gets stronger after brazing! it's way stronger than 4130 or T45.
@PhilGradwell11 жыл бұрын
Hi Zoltan. I find for brass brazing dark red is too dark, it needs to be glowing orange for the brass to flow at 890 celcius. Are you using Silver? Brent Steelman has a good video on Brass Brazing a fork with Oxy-Acetylene called "max fork brazing" And Nagasawa uses brass with a big flame in the video "Nagasawa brazes a lower head lug" These guys are very experienced so they go a lot faster than me!
@PhilGradwell11 жыл бұрын
Hi Zoltan, thanks for the comment. Could you explain way to much time? I do expect to get faster with experience but I don't believe there is a problem holding it at this temperature for this time, apart from exhausting the flux. I don't think Oxy-Acet is necessary. It would provide a hotter flame but no more heat energy, so I think it would be easier to overheat a small area. I brazed the bottom bracket inside out so gravity was helping me :-) I'm in the UK and got SIFBronze from Ceeway
