So glad you said this! We visited a showroom a year ago. We entered one of "those" vans with the "puzzle assembly bed at the door" and we were soon in stitches! For one it took us and other visitors at showroom to try figure out how it all stuck together. Then the hilarity of the point we could not disassemble it to get out the van so had to clamber over it - giggling our guts out as we did so. And the whole showroom was in hysterics with us! hahahaha

I developed the same expertise in outdoor waterproof jackest as customer. I brought, gave away , used and abused so many that i found myself asking others questions and advising them on the best jacket for them. Even sales teenies had no clue what they were selling. And it is true, that expertise comes at a cost.😅 peopel need to ask more questions, read reviews AND TALK TO EACH OTHER, to reduce waste and lost resources. Same in many professions. Too much wastage of staff and resources in companies because management has no clue / expertise and experiments with different policies and procedures which actually hinder the business and its staff ability to use own judgment, freedom and development of service or products. 😅

100% with you on the bed scenario. When we bought our in May, one thing we were adamant we needed was a lounge area. We had hired a fixed bed Motorhome and whilst it was nice, the lack of seating area really got to us. Having somewhere to sit, read, watch telly, eat was very important to us. Thank god we did as guess what, the lousy British weather means we have sat in the lounge a great deal already.

I love my Kelly Kettle. Actually we have both the basecamp and the trekker. I light the fire with a round cotton pad dipped in wax. It never fails. I use the pot support under the fire base, so I don't scorch the grass or table top. I use the hobo stove for all my solo camping trips. I fry eggs, boil eggs, grill chicken breasts, cook ramen with added mushrooms, tomato, greens and an egg. Bacon, steak, grilled mushrooms, and fish would be easy. I first boil the kettle for coffee, then I cook food. Finally I re-fill the kettle and boil it again. After a second cup of coffee, there is enough water to fill my Stanley flask - for more coffee and maybe a cup of tea or soup later.

I've watched many motor home videos and I would probably say that a murphy (USA speak) bed is the best solution to fixed bed wasted space and the chore of making / packing up beds from seating areas. The best bed set up I've seen in a compact van is in a Wingamm Oasi 540, with a great layout and beautiful Italian leather upholstery as well. If I didn't have to pay 200% duty I'd be taking one back to Thailand with me. Having said that, IMHO, I think a fixed chassis motor home is a total waste of a vehicle unless you travel a large percentage of your year. Get a version that jacks off of a flatbed / pickup vehicle and then you can park up the motor home 'box' and use the vehicle when not travelling, and when parked up for a few days on your travels you have the vehicle to ride around in without packing up the motor home 'box', carrying heavy motorbikes or towing another car behind.

We are having similar ideas about a caravan with a fixed bed - would rather have the dining area (which we would never use as a bed) but it gives you extra space and you have, what feels, like a luxury 2 berth van.

Great advice my friend. I don't really understand people who say they love their fixed bed, the bed that turns into a nice couch can be left as a full time bed, but when the days of rain keep coming one after another that bed that turns into a comfy couch seems like a really really good idea. Sitting on the couch watching a movie with some snacks and a bottle of wine feels like heaven, and if you have too many wines just sleep on the couch and your partner can sleep in one of the swivel chairs. haha Safe Travels everyone.

I completely agree. I’m not a motorhome camper but I’ve Caravan for over 35 years as we get older that made up bed was something we decided that we wanted a permanent bed it was put to us. Why do we want that bed and one dealer? Tried to talk about it, it turned out they didn’t have any made up beds, because that was my first question show me the caravans were made up beds and we’ll talk about it. What we don’t have any then that’s why you’re trying to talk me out of it. I do buy German I had my last Caravan for 15 years and the German Caravan before that 11 years and before that I had six British Caravans all leaked, the one we’re on at the moment is coming up to 5 years old and it has the permanent bed with a caravan. You do have more lounge area and we have a kitchen having to make up a bed every night. It was no great problem but having done it for so many years we were getting a bit fed up of it and the biggest thing is if one person got up and the other wanted to lie in, you can’t really do that if you’re sleeping in your living room so all that happens is I will get up take my medication which makes me a bit sleepy. Go back to bed. My wife would get up pull the blind across and she do all her stuff and then I would wake up and get out about nine thirtyish. When it comes to the big fridge, I’ll never have a caravan that doesn’t have a big fridge just love it microwave useful it is not the most important item many years ago when Caravans didn’t have ovens I remember packing and oven in a caravan and it was one of the best things we ever had, because we cook in our caravan we also cook outside on nice days but we go away over winter. We book to go away this Christmas so Christmas dinner will be cooked in the Caravan. But I kinda argue some of my most amazing holidays were in the most basic of tents, with the most basic of equipment and we had a great time I’ve just got older and I like my comforts there will come a time when you decide the same.

Absolutely right. Great advice. Bottom line is make a list of must haves and prioritise. One thing I would also say is it can be stressful driving a large motorhome & limits where you can go. A 6m to 7m van will go into many car parks, any bigger & it becomes a challenge.

Thanks for the helpful info. My wife who uses a wheelchair and myself have been looking at motorhomes for about a month. I have been at them for about 6 years!, since we had to sell our caravan due to wife's illness and me getting older ! 🤣 We have decided on a Swift Voyager 540 with a drop down bed. Adaptations- door widened- lift etc The double bed/sitting area will be reduced so the bed can be lowered closer to the ground- I used to HATE making up the bed at night after sitting around a campfire with a few cans with friends! At the moment I'm just struggling with the conversion cost- around an 30% on top of initial motorhome cost! You're 100% correct take time , don't jump in and blow a pile of money. We think it will take us another 6 months to seprate ourselves from around 90K! Good luck

Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking at motor homes for the past 6 months. Isn't it nteresting that the first thing they show you is the storage! Sod the storage look at the bed scenario, it is the most important. I have changed my mind on the layout about 10 times already. My advise is not to rush into it. Yes you are also right about people saying you shouldn't buy this make or that. There has been a problem with Ford in the past and Fiat had a problem with the gear box etc etc. They are all out there on the roads so whatever it is is a personal choice. Thank you once again for this video it makes great sense to newbies like me!
