Great video; thanks! But when an engine is finally unstuck, are there not rough rings inside the cylinders where the pistons stopped? And are the piston rings not a little messed up? Thanks!
@shopdoc4 күн бұрын
@@TonyGarrett-p1c it would depend a bit on how badly it was stuck. In my case with the 550 the engine was not really stuck so rings have been great! Plenty of compression and not oil burning. But if they’re stuck really badly then rings likely need replaced and cylinder honed. Not always though. I have had some in the past that seemed to do well but not great after they were really stuck.

I use to work at a heavy machinery repair shop and we had one of those welders. We also had a big Lincoln welder in the back of a service truck with a 6 cyl. continental gasoline engine to run it. We would back the service truck up to the shop door and run the leads under the door and we would weld grouser bars on the worn out pads of crawler loaders and it would take a couple days to do that job. One person at each end of the tracks welding. I always liked welding with the one like you have there that was inside the shop. It just welded so good, much better than the welder in the service truck. Welding with 7018s before you got to the end of each pad the slag would be peeled up like a boy dog, self cleaning. I would love to have one now but those old machines (and new ones) are bringing a pretty penny, You did an Awesome job on that one it looks very nice. The Amazon welders would never hold a candle to that machine. You could continuous weld all day long with no problems. Maybe one day I can snag me one of those golden oldies.They are bringing anywhere from about 450.00 to 1000.00 now.

NICE FIND, $250 was a steal! the retaining ring screw that didnt break looks like it isnt original, wonder if someone replaced them with weaker screws that worked well enough before it seized up. i would have extracted the screws from the retaining ring and then installed new and proper bolts so that you could use the main vise screw to press it back apart. it was moving but just was stiff. what issues were you worried about with pulling the pins and end cap off? Stainless steel bolts will cause galvanic corrosion with cast iron if the moisture gets too high, so you may need to keep the jaw bolts oiled to keep moisture out of the sockets. props for not over greasing the screw, i used brake caliper grease on my main screw parts, works great and takes a super long time to dry out. i then used furniture paste wax on all of the exposed metal on the outside. the jaws being proud of the top helps protect the casting from damage, i would be hesitant to take much off for the sake of appearance on a shop vise.
