Having them be my favorite unit in DOW only to find out they don’t exist on tabletop was definitely painful. Sucks since they look so cool and I wanted to know more about their lore which is sadly also very limited.

Same with the necron wraiths, it's not really a removal it's a redesign/renaming (lychguard just look "cooler" ). The old necron wraiths were just wraith with necron head stuck on now they are more like long canoptek spiders.

I just got into 40k Necrons like… 7ish months ago, and man, I wish Pariahs where a thing, more for lore. But they’ve been structurally replaced with Lytchguard. Which is kinda sad really. :(

Not sure who told you Pariahs were good. They were hideously overpriced, didn't reanimate (then called "We'll Be Back") didn't up your Phase Out number (back in 3rd edition, most powerful armies had "off button" rules; to date, Tyranids are the only ones who still have theirs), couldn't port through the Monolith, had no real transport option of any kind, and had neither enough attacks to make their Warscythes count, nor the invulnerable saves to hang around long enough to put in lots of work over time, nor even the initiative (nor grenades, depending on the edition) to even swing in a combat that they miraculously found themselves in. A gimmick unit at best hampered by several factors, and something akin to the Pyrovore of their day. It's clear they were meant to be the Necrons' counter to psykers. It's just a shame they were so _bad_ at it. As for why they're gone, a lot of speculation suggests that it was the departure of Andy Chambers (think an earlier and more awesome Phil Kelly) from the company. Chambers was the master of all things Xeno, from Eldar to Orks to Tyranids. (He even dabbled in Space Wolves, hence why they're such characterful and beloved standouts among the Astartes legions today.) So when Chambers got the Necrons, they were certainly no exception. He came up with most things Necron at that time, up to and including the C'tan. You can still kinda' see these ideas in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, wherein the Necrons would kill most of everything except for the occasional blank human, and then turn those blank humans into Pariahs. This is why Pariahs lost out on so much of what made other Necron units better: they weren't "real" Necrons at all. A lot of the Pariahs' fluff in particular suggested some greater plan from the C'tan, particularly the Deceiver. It was even theorized that the C'tan intended to seal the warp off forever with legions of Pariahs, as the warp and the C'tan had a very fire-and-ice relationship in that both were equally detrimental to the other. Unfortunately, when Chambers left Games Workshop for Blizzard, whatever plans he had for the Necrons died then and there, only for the faction to be handed off to (for some godforsaken reason) the stunningly uncreative and notoriously terrible fluff writer, Matt Ward. Ward had a certain... style that he liked to do with all his armies: each one was the bestest evar and unmatched by anything else until the _next_ codex Ward wrote. Ward's codecies dominated most of 5th edition, ascending to a power tier of their own. Only Cruddace's Imperial Guard even remotely came close. The Eldar and Necrons had dated books that suffered from being overpriced in comparison to newer books. The Dark Eldar were more interested in being cool than pragmatic. The Orks were reduced to a singular gimmick army that was incredibly easy to hard counter. Chaos and Tyranids were purposefully nerfed into the pavement in ways that they arguably _still_ haven't recovered from. Basically, if you were playing 40k seriously at the time, you were playing a Ward codex. This was an era of 40k's history probably best summarized by the 5th edition Grey Knight codex. It was a completely busted nightmare capable of utterly incomprehensible nonsense at unforgivably low points costs, and the fluff was so atrociously un-40k that it still gets mocked today. The backlash is probably why the Grey Knights have been in the power tier ghetto since 8th edition's indexes. But at the time, Ward moved products unlike either of his codex authoring contemporaries (Phil Kelly and Robin Cruddace), and so probably for this reason, Ward got the Necrons. I mean, Necrons are _basically_ Space Marines when you think about it, right? ... ...Right? What also probably had something to do with it all was that this was the era of the Chapterhouse lawsuit. Largely spurred by the 5th edition Tyranid codex introducing unit after unit after unit that had no GW-sanctioned model at the time (though the Dark Eldar were also pretty notorious for it as well, including the _exceptionally_ tragic lack of a remade Asdrubael Vect that saw the legendary archon literally killed in fluff to explain why you could no longer play him), it was the Mycetic Spore (a predecessor to the modern Tyrannocyte) that really introduced players to Chapterhouse's custom sculpts that totally were their own original creations and if you so happened to use them in 40k games then you couldn't _really_ blame Chapterhouse... Except GW sure _tried_ and eventually failed. The ruling went something like GW had no model, therefore Chapterhouse wasn't infringing on anything because there was no model to infringe upon. As this compounded with the spectacularly ill-fated Finecast experiment, if Pariahs were going to be remade, they were going to be remade in this garbage resin that literally collapsed in direct sunlight if not mixed exactly right. But if they weren't going to be remade, they'd have no model, and thus third-partiers could make their own Pariah models essentially without repercussions. This would not stand, and therefore the Pariahs went poof. Sure, the Lychguard _could_ have been made the new Pariahs, but for whatever reason, the rules and fluff that would've made the unit into proper Pariahs never materialized. (Plus, I agree with you that there was a sleekness to the Pariah that the Lychguard just couldn't match, like all the Necron bodies that existed thus far were just prototypes leading up to _this_ singular design. By contrast, Lychguard feel more like melee Immortals, and Immortals with ouch sticks doth not Pariahs make.) Most at the time attributed this retcon to Ward's writing style. After all, when you write the 5th edition Grey Knight codex, where do you go from there? How do you make an army any more Mary Sue than Kaldor Draigo being able to one-shot Daemon Primarchs? Well, obviously the Necrons had to be so powerful they _killed_ the all-powerful and mysterious C'tan, then considered some of the most powerful singular beings in the setting. It'd be like if Termagants killed their own Hive Tyrant. Nevertheless, a bunch of incredibly stupid people thought it was badass... and the rest is history. Extremely _stupid_ rewritten history that I disavow as canon to this day. The fact that Pariahs are supposedly coming _back_ to 40k fills me with loads of... cynicism. You don't get praise by apologizing for doing a stupid a _decade_ after the fact. ...And the C'tan are still dead, by the way, so they're missing the point anyway.

yeah, not only does this clear up why the Pariahs disappeared for me, but it explains a lot of other . . . interesting choices GW has made over the past few years. So thank you!

I started getting into Warhammer last year when I came across necron art and played dark crusade. The necrons are my favorite faction and I don't dislike their current lore but something about the old necrons just being mindless machines that want to destroy all life is just so appeasing to me. I'm gonna try and get myself a pariah model one day.
