Fairly certain that is 20th and Main. Still looks the same today. The church facade at 20th and Market matches the facade of the old second Presbyterian.

My mother and two aunts worked in the various tobacco factories in Wheeling in the 40's and 50's as single women trying to support themselves and help members of their family. That first picture shows a "stripping" room where the veins and the stems were removed from the tobacco leaf. Could you imagine?

Never been a fan of their sauce. I am a sauce snob and theirs is not close to being good in my opinion. I have Italian ancestors and love good Italian food. I have lived in Wheeling most of my life and never knew they were once located there. Then again, I learn some new things here. Keep up the good work.

Might not be a fire. No Fire Department would park apparatus that close to a burning building for fear of structural collapse. It’s possible as the flood waters are receding the engine may be pumping out the basement of water. It could also be long after the fire and they are in the overhaul stage.

Wow! Remember Greens Donuts. Lived in Wheeling until 1966. Attended Central Catholic High School with my brother in the late '50s. We always attended Mass on Fridays and the good Catholic brothers insisted we take Holy Communion. I believe in may have been on my junior or senior year when a friend of my brother was given the responsibility of going to Greens Donuts to pick up a couple dozen donuts for their class so they would all have a semi-breakfast after having fasted that morning to receive Holy Communion. My brother's friend, Brad, had an old Hillman, an English car whose manufacturing is now defunct. How an English car from a small British manufacturer even ended up in Wheeling, WVA is anyone guess. My father was a Ford salesman for Hundley's, a Ford car dealership in which I believe was the Edgington Lane suburb of Wheeling. It may be long gone also. Anyway, this is getting to be too much information. To sum up, we always went down Suicide Hill to Greens Donut shop. We lived in the Park View and Elm Grove section of Wheeling. Brad drove down the hill in that sedan Hillman with the seeming expertise of a Grand Prix driver, and my brother and I were never afraid but always excited and considered it almost the thrill of a roller coaster ride. From reading the accounts of various other people, that hill had some bad connotations with harrowing experiences. Certainly wouldn't want to descend that hill in dangerous icy conditions, at least not the way Brad drove it. Still can't recall if the car had a manual or automatic transmission. You could certainly use low gear coming down that hill. Using Google, saw a sign on Pike Street at the top of the descent that says "Use Low Gear." Descended that street many times too when I had a job near Warwood. Anyway again, this is getting to be a book instead of a comment. Any getback welcome. Right, think Greens Donuts were the best in Wheeling, otherwise the good brother at Central Catholic and the Good Lord would never have directed us there. Great site, as Bob Hope used to sing, "Thanks for the memories . . ." Will subscribe.

@@wheelinghistory Ok Jim, great. Will tune in to your many videos and stories and books. Have lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, NJ, and NY, but always remember Wheeling with its good and sometimes bittersweet memories, LOL. Have to get back and relive some of those times. Presently living in southwest Ohio, Ugg. Keep up the good work, Jim. Perhaps you can eventually establish some kind of get together for present and former people from Wheeling. Good luck in your endeavors.

Yes it was 1978 and the former American Freedom Train locomotive was refurbished and used by the Chessie System (the former B&O railroad) to travel over its mainline network as an excursion train celebrating 150 years of the B&O. I believe the last time an excursion train this popular visited Wheeling was in 1963 which traveled the same route and stopped at the B&O terminal showcasing displays of the 100th birthday of West Virginia and 100 years after Civil War. I enjoyed both events.
