Being military and having been on sea, you see how even though people may come back, they're changed forever and the waters take a piece of them with it. I've lost more Marines back home then I did while away.

I know this song is about the brotherhood of sailors, but my best friend introduced me to sea shanties a while back ago, and unfortunately, he passed away two weeks ago. I came back to this song to remember him. I loved him like a brother, and I miss him terribly.

I know this is a opinion perspective but when he is talking about it almost capsising and looking into the dark abyss. I think he is leaning over about to jump in rather then falling in itself. Because i think his wanting to join his crewmates but then he realises that this isnt what he wants. I think thats why he went there in the first place.

I’ve moved pretty recently and I don’t have a ton of friends in my new place like I did at my last, I just had a solid group of the most fun and good people I know. For some reason this song really just reminded me of them and how I still think of them and hoping that they’ll still think of me.

>Its a nice morning >You are ready go go on a trip with no end > You fear nothing about the waters > The trip is long, and you grow thirsty > You can hear them, your mates in you mind, and they are thinking of you. >The waters are tough, but you fight the strife >The souls of your dead mates quickly fill your mind, ears and eyes. >The abyss, is long and deep >The souls are a sign of motivation. >The sea is large, the water is now your best bud. >England is nowhere to be found, only waters. >Your trip to Sailors End is to a close. >You get to the dock, after 5 years of paddling and rowing >The hope quickly fills your mind >The souls seem real. >But we all think that our bones are forever in the ocean.

Can I just take a moment to speak about something called "context" By their nature, singles or albums by most artists have to not only capture an emotion by telling a story, but set up that story in the first verse or two before the rest of the song can pay off. Every song itself has to build its own context. However, certain genres of music--such as Broadway musicals, fandom songs, and shanties--already have their context set up by the genre itself, so the song can use that valuable first verse to progress a pre-existing story or character. That's the power of context.
