Can I just take a moment to speak about something called "context" By their nature, singles or albums by most artists have to not only capture an emotion by telling a story, but set up that story in the first verse or two before the rest of the song can pay off. Every song itself has to build its own context. However, certain genres of music--such as Broadway musicals, fandom songs, and shanties--already have their context set up by the genre itself, so the song can use that valuable first verse to progress a pre-existing story or character. For some reason this song made me bawl like I hadn't in months. This song reminds me of an acquaintance of mine who decided that life was too much to bear any longer. He took his own life last year. Where do I tie in? I mean it sucks that anyone died that way, but personally, I had some sort of weird vision about a month before that he died via suicide. I carry around the guilt every day of not saying something to let him know that someone cared, because I thought that it was just a weird nightmare. As someone who has suffered from intrusive thoughts before as well, I was stupid to not step in and try to do something, to have not seen the signs beforehand. I have considered joining him, but I imagine that in his last few moments, he probably regretted leaving his friends and family behind, that it was painful, that he didn't actually want to go like that, etc. I'm sorry Braeden. I'm sorry I didn't say something to you that day. I'm sorry I didn't see the signs. If you knew how hard your best friends cried, how hard strangers and underclassmen cried, how hard I cried, I think you would've stayed. I hope you're in a better place now and that your transition to the afterlife was painless and quick. I shouldn't carry around this much guilt but it just kills me that I could've said something, and he might still be here. It's been almost a year, but time doesn't quite heal those kinds of wounds as easily.
