There is no such thing as "Hawaiian Mongoose." These are actually Indian Mongoose distributed from India in order to control rat population, and that plan backfired. Now, they are nothing but invasive species.

One thing I would like to point out is that mongoose DID have a noticeable effect on local rat populations here in Hawaii. That whole "one is nocturnal, the other is diurnal" statement is inaccurate for explaining why the mongoose are an issue. They are an issue because they not only hunt smaller rodents like mice and rats, but they hunt birds. The extreme effect the mongoose have had on local endemic bird species are why they are a problem. TL:DR They do hunt rats, it's a bold faced lie that they don't, but they kill endemic birds and that's why they're an issue. I'm a senior in a 450 Hawaiian Natural History class and our project is on the mongoose, and my professors have explained that this whole "nocturnal, diurnal, it was a total failure" spiel is misinformation and if we said that it was true in our report that we'd get a 0% on our project.

We just got back. Had a very enjoyable stay. The downside is, its in Waikiki. But with transportation the Windward side and North Shore are readibly accessible.

I was in Waikiki Two years ago And 8 months ago Both times I wandered through The Royal Hawaiian! She Is The Beautiful Lady Of Waikiki!

Fancy place! The porch reminds me of the grand hotel in Michigan.

I used to see them scurrying around what was left of the lake, walking to and from school in Moanalua in the '70s They are really fast!
