Tossing this ship into the ocean will have devastating consequences for marine life. Look at SS Andrea Doria wreck. Many fish and divers died going there because she is made of the same material as SS United States.

i am no diver but i dont get what i so interesting diving a stripped out ship vs one that sank during war or a storm with all its contents.

They closed the ship a long time ago to tourists, so the only way to see it is when she's sunk, if you're certified as a diver and have the equipment. It's a piece of history, a beautiful ship, the allure is still there. And they didn't strip it completely. I'm not a diver either, but aspire to be like my dad, and I study and follow it, so I understand the draw for this.

What a waste of money. That derelict should have been scrapped right after the "conservancy" stripped and sold all the value out of it. All those years of donations need to be accounted for.

The Conservancy didn't send the ship to get stripped, nor did they sell everything. The auction was in the 1980's, the full stripping was done in the 1990's to get rid of the asbestos. The Conservancy acquired the ship in 2011, saving her from the scrapyard, since then they've been fighting an uphill battle with the world basically against them. The final nail in the coffin was when the landlord of the pier Penn Warehousing got greedy, trying to extort money out of the Conservancy by illegally doubling the fees, which were already really high to begin with. Which most of the donated money went to keep the ship from getting evicted, and preventing this situation happening. Which it happened anyway because Penn Warehousing is a scummy company. *Your anger against the Conservancy is misplaced, and find you to be a fool for thinking this in the first place.*

No worries I think. I could clearly see America's name on her bow in those photos, in one you can clearly see the taller funnels of the larger United States in the background, on the far side of a warehouse on the pier.

As tall as a skyscraper really puts it into perspective more for me. I knew it was a large ship, I’ve seen it before but that just helped me realize the sheer scale of it. Great video! Unfortunate fate :(

I feel like Ron Desantis is behind the plan to reef the SS United States. Ron Desantis has a reputation for creating bullshit and fucking up whatever he touches because he does not give a shit. I feel like the plan by Okaloosa country is just one of his bullshit ideas I think Ron Desantis could be behind this plan because 1. He wants to use it to raise funds for his or his governments activities 2. He wants to divert public attention away from his misdeeds or some nefarious plan he has yet to unveil 3. He wants to divert the Florida economy away from ethnic minority and LGBTQ owned businesses (DeSantis has proven time and time again that he as a racist and homophobe) We need to start a mass protest campaign against Okaloosa country. John Quazzoni knows what to do with the SS United States.
