In the shop drawings how do I add a 3d model into the plans?
@bigbeamstimberframes770 Жыл бұрын
Hello Mick. I’m not sure what your asking for, but I’ll try. While in an open shop drawing select the orbit tool, then if you hover over one of the faces and hold down the left mouse button and drag, it will rotate the image for a 3-d view. To restore to 2-d, you can select camera, then front view. Hope this helps.

This is a response to Neal P. For some reason his comment didn’t appear in the thread. Neal’s words “ Neal P Hello. THis is great instruction, Thanks. However, I can't get the arc to Push/Pull. I created the tie as a component and measured 2" for the guide and created the arc, but when I triple click the arc does not turn blue and will not push/pull out. Not sure what I am doing wrog.” My response is…you need to open the component (triple click on the tie) before you draw the curve otherwise you are just drawing a 2-dimensional arc rather than a curve on a 4” thick tie. So in effect, you can’t push/pull a 2-d line, so the curve needs to be part of a 3-d object (component), so you must open the component, then layout and draw your arc, which you should then be able to push/pull that section. Hope it works for you.

Great videos! I'm new to SketchUp. At 10:57, if you use 1/2" faces, the peg holes will be 4" from the top face. Similarly, at 13:03, mortice depth will be 4 1/2". I like to display Back Edges - (K) hot key on macOS version of SketchUp Make 2017. This will show the reference lines for the mortices and the peg holes. I'm finding hot keys/shortcut keys save a lot of time as opposed to slinging the mouse cursor back and forth to the menus. Especially on a really large display.

I currently do not have any specific rafter videos, but I really should make a few. Common rafters would be an easy video. Compound stuff like hips and valleys would make for a fairly long video, but there are some shortcuts that would save the average user a lot of head scratching. If you’ve subscribed, stay tuned.

Hi, thanks for these vids. 1 question, when you copy a component, say the base...do you have to make the copy a component?
@bigbeamstimberframes7703 жыл бұрын
Assuming you mean repeat “make component” no. When using the move copy tool, once you’ve made a copy no further action is required. If however, you want to edit one of them (the original or the copy) and not the other, then you need to triple click the one you want to edit, then right click and select “make unique.” Once you do that you can edit either one while not changing the other.

Question re: rubies and versions. I have SU Pro (2021, 2020, 2019 - part of package) AND 2017 SU maker, free. Can I only complete the trestle drawings (using the TF Extensions) if I draw this in 2017 version? Is there anyway to access the TF Extensions in SU Pro 2021? Using a Mac. The instruction are awesome, confusion has been matching the TF Ext. with the version. I know - sure could use a course or sit-down helper. Sincerely appreciate any quick answer or advice.
@bigbeamstimberframes7703 жыл бұрын
You will need to install the TF extensions with each version you use so you will need to install the extension with whichever Pro version you are using. You might get a message saying that TF extensions is not compatible with Pro, but continue with the installation anyway and it should work. Best of luck.
@bigbeamstimberframes7703 жыл бұрын
Sorry I’m just getting back to you, your message went to my spam folder...you should be able to complete the trestle ponies without TF extensions, but you won’t be able to add pegs nor create shop drawings without TF extensions. Although I’m not a Mac user, I recently downloaded Pro 2020 (on windows) and added TF extensions. I did get a message that said it wasn’t compatible with that version of Pro, but it did download and although I haven’t tried all the TF features, everything I have tried still worked.

Those hammer beam trusses are superb...wonder if you did the design ??
@bigbeamstimberframes7703 жыл бұрын
Yes, I designed the frame and modeled it in SketchUp. Hammer trusses were designed following the plans in Steve Chappell’s book A Timber Framers Workshop. The hardest part was designing the rest of the roof system to replicate a Dutch Gable Hip Roof with all slopes at 10:12 and have them meet at the same plane at the eaves.

Great tutorial Thanks. I see you're on SU2018 which isn't listed as supported by TF Extension in extension warehouse, but you are still able to access "TF Create Joint". I'm running SU2019, have downloaded TF extension ... sadly it will not create joint ("TF Create Joint" is light grey, not clickable in the right click drop down menu). I haven't found any chatter of this on TFG forum or anyone with a work around. Clark B hasn't done any revisions on his program since 2016 (sure appreciate the work he has done thou!) Hold onto that SU 2018
@bigbeamstimberframes7704 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear create joint isn’t working for you in SU2019 as it is likely the greatest feature of TF Extensions. I haven’t used the 19 version so I can’t say if it is due to Clark not updating. I would double check to make sure there isn’t something funky with your joinery lines (like maybe they aren’t actually connected although they appear to be). Try drawing a very simple tenon and see if that works. Or perhaps you haven’t clicked the joint correctly to select it (can’t remember if you need to click it twice or three times). If none of that works, try posting your question on one of the forums. Hopefully it’s a simple fix. Another option is to download the 2018 make version and give it a go. I actually have the 2016 make version loaded as well as 2018 pro so I can “save as” either one when sharing files with someone running an earlier version or under the Make platform. Let me know how it works out.

I'm playing around with a 2 post pergola with a 2, 12 pitch, with 45 at the bottom of the knee brace, and funky 35 degree at top, how would you draw that?
@bigbeamstimberframes7704 жыл бұрын
You would use the protractor tool to make a guideline projected from the top the post. It’s not hard, but is hard to explain in words. If you select the protractor tool, then click once on the outer corner of the top of the post, then slide your mouse to the inner corner of the same edge of the post top, click once then move your mouse upward to get a tilted guideline, then type 2:12, then enter. You will get a dashed guideline representing the slope. You could also type 9.46, enter (which is the angle of a 2:12 slope). I find it easier to just do 2:12. Once you have a guideline representing the correct slope, you can pull additional parallel guidelines to outline your rafter, then use line tool to enclose the rafter. Once rafter is drawn you can use a similar process to draw a 45 degree line to represent the brace. I’ll try to put together a short tutorial. If you can somehow send me an image of what your trying to do, I’ll customize the tutorial to your design.
