I didn't catch on that the piano ending was part of this song until last week after hearing the same radio station play it a few times. I'd always thought it was a different track by someone else.

I grew up in the 70's so was very familiar with Layla. But not the full length version with the piano section - because they never played that on the radio, only a truncated version without it. So I spent much of my life never knowing it even existed. Fast forward to 1989 and I'm on holiday with some friends and we're staying in a hotel. I'm in my room and getting ready to go out, and this comes on over those entertainment consoles that some hotels have, which is probably just the hotel putting on a CD. And Layla came on. I just thought, oh I haven't heard that for a while.....as the first part played. Then came the piano part that I never knew existed. I was simply lost for words. I'm sat on the edge of the bed, moved beyond belief, just staring ahead, not quite being able to comprehend the beauty of what I'm hearing. Fast forward again to 2019 and the last proper episode of The Grand Tour in front of an audience. They played the full version of it over a montage of things Clarkson Hammond and May had done over the previous 17 years. The combination of the memories and the music moved me to tears, as it did a lot of people. That's the effect this music has. And to think, this piano section was a complete accident. When it was written this tune was never intended to have this part. It only went on after Clapton heard Jim Gordon playing a piano piece in the studio he had composed completely separately. He convinced him to include it in Layla and it was recorded about a week after the first part.
