Counter points; yes she has 2 upgrades to get out but she comes with extra resources and a resource on her identity to pay for them, she has a side scheme that finds them for her, and everyone runs the basic PSS that finds an upgrade for free anyways. “She can’t fight stalwart and steady villains” than don’t cause nobody likes those villains anyways. And finally nobody plays Wolverine anyways, overrated hero and ally! Obviously this is all based on my solo experience but I assume everyone else had the exact same experience. Enjoyed the video! I think I would also self identify as a Johnny/Spike player. I don't try to make every deck I play powerful. I often go for theme over power, but I seldom make a deck that isn't functional at an expert level. I found it interesting when you were talking about playing other people's decks on MCDB. I enjoy looking at other people's decks, but personally I almost never play them. It is only on special occasions. I just much prefer playing my own decks. I also didn't go on MCDB until I started posting decks. I just created my own style of deck building offline lol. I think this would be an interesting topic to talk about in the video we have planned!
@mcandyr24 күн бұрын
This is awesome!! I love seeing the conversation growing.
@jonathanpickles294624 күн бұрын
Theme isn't really a Johnny thing in MtG, it's more Timmy or "Vorthos" an unfortunately named later group of "people who like to follow the lore". The original analysis was by marketing to make sure that they made cards for all of their player base presumably to keep selling to them. I am not sure how accurately it maps to Marvel Champions as it's a very different type of game & type of selling model. They may have already lost the attention of a sector of the playing population so have not good reason to cater for them. That said there are a wide range of heroes & decks; villains & difficulty settings and the game certainly caters to a wide variety of tastes & play patterns. Something like the MTG classic split is probably somewhere near, though I'd guess theme players are a bigger proportion. I generally gravitate to something Spikey/Johnny too I like to win & hate to play really inefficient cards but I do like to make my own decks even if they are rarely far from what the designers clearly intended. I really dislike playing other people's deck in fact & I am terrible with them! I am largely oblivious to the theme.
@charredgambit24 күн бұрын
Yes! I tried to follow the categories to the best of my ability and saw the player archetypes did expand past the 3 major ones. I tried to keep it simple, but I can definitely see how the 'theme' can be more of a Timmy trait. (If I included Vorthos I think I'd be part of that for sure). I'm not going to pretend these archetypes align 1-to-1 for this game, but I definitely think they consider multiple different audiences when developing kits based on the type of players they think will gravitate to them. It's interesting your discussion of playing other people's decks. Usually it takes a bit of a learning curve depending on the deckbuilder but I'm usually able to put a strategy into action after a couple of plays. Thanks for your comment, really interesting to see all the differences!

I love this series! And the intro is 🔥 How do you decide what hero to play in a given matchup? Like once you get to a hero you like, could you just play them every time?
@charredgambit27 күн бұрын
@@WinningHandPodcast Thanks so much, as always! To answer the question, there's usually two major criteria for what hero I choose: The first criteria is theme. This is pretty self-explanatory but I try to match the character to the matchup as much as possible. For example, if a hero has a villain in the game as a nemesis set, that's essentially a shoe-in for a matchup. Usually its not so easy, so I just choose a team specific matchup (this case being an Avenger vs Zola). The second criteria for picking is just thinking about the abilities of the hero and if the scenario is a good showcase of their strengths. Even though I could have chosen any Avenger to go against Zola, I thought Ant-Man specifically had a lot of strong tools to fight and excel against Zola which is a great showcase of the strengths of the hero. I'm not sure what you mean by the last question asking about "once you get a hero you like" so feel free to elaborate and I'll comment on that as well. Thanks as always!

@@prufrock1977 Thanks for checking out the tier list and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll respond to both of the comments here. 1. That's pretty funny LOL. I will say Protection was the aspect I came around to the latest, but I (partially) blame it with my experience with the core box / precons. I honestly don't think protection is done justice in any individual precon and made it (personally) frustrating to play. Nowadays, however, I like playing protection and use it a ton in multiplayer to help out the table. I had to give it a real chance by deckbuilding for it to make it work for me! 2. Aggression is a tough one too I'll admit. Going past the archetypes that simply focusing on rushing down the villain in 2-4 turns, it has some interesting archetypes with honed technique. boot camp, etc. If Protection was my least explored, Aggression is probably my second least so I get you there.

Hey, the video content is really good, I'm enjoying the gameplay, but there's some problem with maybe the lighting that makes the bottom of the picture quite difficult to see. Especially when it comes to seeing what's in your hand. I noticed it in your previous video as well. Maybe there's something you can do about that for the next one to make the viewing a bit easier? I'm really enjoying the series, great idea for revisiting these older heroes and villains. As an idea for how to include the loss games, could you do a heavily edited short? Maybe just showing the highlights (or lowlights) of the lost game(s) and then how the actual loss came at the end? That could be a fun thing to release the day before the winning game play video, although it might be a lot effort to edit.
@charredgambitАй бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment and it is something I have noticed in recent videos as well. I need to invest in another "spotlight" to go into the top left corner (currently its just a table lamp) so that it can be brightened up. In terms of seeing my hand... that's on me and I just need to be more cognizant to hold my hand out for the camera to see and/or lay my hand on the table so there is a good view before I get playing. The latest episode I think I tried to make my hand more readable at times, it is just something I need to keep in mind during the recording. Thank you for the kind words about the series, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I really do like that idea about making a "lowlights" reel. I think I'll try doing something like that right after the conclusion of RoRS. Do a lowlight reel of all the losses in the series as a stand-in before starting Kang/GMW in the New Year. It'll give me a chill 2 week buffer for Christmas and New Years where I don't have to record content but still upload to the channel while spending time with family for the holidays!

I enjoy absorbing man. Yah he’s one of the easier villains but I love his mechanic that the longer you take the worse his cards can get over time. Great playthrough
@charredgambitАй бұрын
Agreed, I think if he was designed today the delay counters would tie more into the scenario rather than just his environments and a few encounter cards. Creating a scenario that is meant to be rushed is a unique design space that not many villains occupy. If Absorbing Man was... well any harder he could occupy that space himself.
@GetUpandGameАй бұрын
37:39 I think the main value for the Hawkeye Kate ally is less about how much damage she can do and more that she lets you use the card that you might not have otherwise been able to use. Like, she’s basically a resource sink. Similar to Plan B or machine man. That being said, I don’t think she’s that great but I think that’s how she’s meant to be used.
@charredgambitАй бұрын
Yeah I think I realized that as well, I just used a bad comparison to possibly the best resource sink in the entire game. There are plenty of times on plenty of heroes where an extra resource turning into a damage could've been good. Just a question if it is BETTER than any other slot that ally could be.
@GetUpandGameАй бұрын
I honestly think Nick has the potential to be one of my absolute favorite heroes. He looks custom built for solo, and I’m very excited for his unique playstyle
@charredgambitАй бұрын
Even though I said he's a bit *less* unique on the design spectrum than Maria, he surely does not look any less fun. All the ways his cards worked together seems really cool and I love the design space of having villains and minions scheme against you while in hero form. Seems really strong, thematic, and fun!
@jonathanpickles2946Ай бұрын
It's pretty shady deciding what you did in AE after you have flipped then used a Hero ability that provides new information! 11:00 ish. Meanwhile you should really only play one arrow per turn. The opportunity cost of 3 damage to make a second shot is huge. You are generally better off doing something else with your resources than playing another arrow outside of very corner cases, like having to clear a some threat & several minions. I think Hawkeye is pretty well designed but just a little behind the curve. The discount you get on arrows isn't quite worth the cost of only playing one per turn (except Explosive which is great but very niche). The game would have been fine if this was the par level but as it's a bit higher he was never quite there. He does have needless annoyances like having to pay to fetch is bow. If his quiver were permanent, his bow was free on set up and he had an even that let him fire arrows without tapping his bow for a round he'd be pretty close to A (maybe)
@charredgambitАй бұрын
I really like the analysis you left on Hawkeye and definitely agree stuff that you suggested to "buff" him. Getting his quiver and bow for basically free would be a much different and stronger hero imo. I do think he functions well just seems a tad underpowered, which is fine! On terms of the "slight cheat", the only thing that happened was the quiver activation, but like I was already debating on the recover before I flipped it. The new information really had no bearing on that whatsoever, but alas I called it a slight cheat regardless. Mockingbird double arrow was just a play I should've decided on before I did the recover imo. If I got a better arrow of the quiver, I wouldn't have allowed that takeback bc thats taking advantage of new information. Thanks for watching :)
@ryangoodwin6411Ай бұрын
Nice game. Hawkeye is one of my personal favourites heroes but he does take a little extra work to get running smoothly compared to some other heroes. I tend to agree about difficulty creep. I build out my whole box (all decks) for game night. No deck has 8 allies. Pick a hero, pick a villain, and play. We only play multiplayer, so it's much more a teamwork experience. I've tweaked all the decks, and maybe 6-8 decks are economy versions of interesting decks on MarvelCDB. Hence, I don't "play" Spider Man in protection, I have to "swap" him into protection. For my sense of what our group likes, we'll probably never play heroic mode. We tried skirmish mode just to see how a shorter game felt, but it felt too short, as no one really got built out. What if we never play expert? We don't care, we're having fun with normal. We loved Red Skull, but GMW left us worried that all the rest of the expansions will only be playable with house-rules. The villain packs have been fantastic though. We love all of them.

Welcome to the community, gave you a sub! Marvel Champions will die without Caleb, like MTG died after Richard Garfield (Sarcasm).
