My 4-month trip ends here with this BIG open party. Free food for all. Very rare carnival of hungry ghost month. KL, Penang, Butterworth, BM, Ipoh, JB, Singapore. From casual interactions, they were Chinese Malaysians in working class. Not much of education, they were simple, hardworking Chinese. Most speak Mandarin, not much of dialects. Stark contrast to Singapore, across a ‘river’ that prefer Hokkien English. Hungry ghost festival took varied meanings here. Many came for free food, good food. Filling up ‘hungry ghosts’. Some came to worship, burn joss paperwork, many came for live music performance. A rare carnival in Johor Baru, a booming city with many mega projects.
