This is good for student flutes but for intermediate, silver or professional flutes its mutch better to adjust the pads rather than bend the keys.

The title says "how to adjust a student flute", right?
@matijaflutesАй бұрын
However, keys are bent around on all flutes at some point. If they are perfectly centered and leveled, then you don't want to mess with them, but if you see that the key itself isn't where it's supposed to be, then you bend it into place, then level the pad by whatever means necessary that doesn't compromise the pad.

@@matijaflutes I was very impressed when I read in the description about the Armstrong 104 because it was good to know that a professional can rock a piece with it as it seems too many people act as if open hole flutes are the standards for professionals. Well, maybe in the modern day flute world it is, I guess. However, before this new musical concept, wasn't it so that in regards to the silver or metal flutes, that they were not open-holed?🤔 Well, I do have both, but was thinking about an Armstrong or a Gemeinhart open-hole with a b-foot joint to add to my arsenal. Oh, thumb's up!!!! Also, it does appear that the 104 comes an open-hole version too 😁

Absolutely lovely warm tone! I currently own a Guo flute but will look into this one as well!
@matijaflutes7 ай бұрын
This will obviously sound like I am beating my own drum, but this is far superior to Guo in every way. Professionally made just like a wooden flute, BM pads (Boris Magnetic) handmade quality padding and key fitting work. The pad cushion is natural suede, and the pad behaves like a hard pad, even though it's elastic, because it adheres to the rubber magnet stabilizer. Ebonite is a natural material, hard pressed rubber to achieve the density of ebony wood. You can read only good things about the material, and perhaps hear other flutes made with it like Rudall Carte. And of course my 24 years of flutemaking experience goes into it. ...also it's a lot more microphone friendly than a metal flute, very even volume throughout the three octaves. Dynamic mic is normally not a problem but condenser mic and metal flute are no friends. I guess it also doesn't get affected by temperature changes as much as a metal flute, if at all. I just started using this material so I don't really have such data on it.

Hi there. Could you please advise on the specific screws I should adjust to fix the issue where my high E flat sounds flat with standard fingering but is in tune with the shortened fingering? I frequently alternate between the two fingerings in chromatic passages to balance the intonation with surrounding notes. I appreciate your help.
@borispopovich11 ай бұрын
High E I suppose in the third octave... and the lower two E's fine? It's hard to tell without actually having the instrument in my hands, but sounding flat has more to do with key heights, headjoint cork placement, and how far the headjoint is pulled out. Once you move the head, all the mathematical ratios change, so it's a compromise which you have to compensate with the way you blow. Adjustments don't solve intonation problems. Flute is also not a perfect instrument, which refers to the intonation, so don't expect it to be as accurate as a piano. Equal tempered scale is off in the first place. Temperature and the way you blow affects the intonation a lot. The distance of the key cups from the toneholes should be properly set because it affects intonation as well. Too many factors, sorry I can't help long distance.
@matijaflutes10 ай бұрын
There are no screw adjustments for Eb. Check if D# key opens enough. If the key height is low it will make Eb flat. In fact all the keys on the footjoint should open more than centerjoint keys.

Is there some standard which provides information on the E flat key relative to the spatula and the roller(s)? If the top of the E flat key is not parallel with the top of the spatula/roller(s), it's difficult to slide the pinky smoothly.
@borispopovich Жыл бұрын
This should be set when the flute is made, but in general the thickness of the tails on C and B determine where the rollers are, and the C# lever has to flush with Eb lever and the rollers, so depending where everything is, you play with bending the levers carefully, sanding Eb cork or changing it if it needs to be thicker. Eb is bent in the same way like C#, by holding down the cup firmly and pulling or pushing the lever.
@yishihara55527 Жыл бұрын
@@borispopovich So high-end flutes like Powell and Brannen are also adjusted/regulated by bending keys in addition to adding/removing cork and silencing material? Bending keys sounds scary to me, as if they will be bent so much compared to when they came from the factory.
@borispopovich Жыл бұрын
@@yishihara55527 Powell C# lever should be made of white gold precisely for the purpose of being more stable, so if you are a gentle player you should not need to bend it back in place. Japanese flutes, well depends on the company, should also be made of not so soft materials and should not be bent out of place. Some flutes are so hard that they can't be bent, some so soft that you can bend them with your mind :)
@yishihara55527 Жыл бұрын
@@borispopovich Yes, I've heard of white gold being used. In the case where the keys cannot be bent, then the only choice is to make adjustments by sanding things down or adding material (in the case of high-end flutes). I have some special prototype pads that were installed in my flute almost 30 years ago. Even I wasn't told what proprietary materials were used, but none had to be replaced. They are amazing. All that needed to be done for a couple of the pads was some minor shimming.

@matijaflutes2 жыл бұрын
Piccolo doesn't have adjustment screws normally and everything is very small, so I would have to zoom in and get a sharp picture to show that. The pins that you see are only there to secure the connections between keys and lugs. You don't adjust anything with those. Next time I am working on a piccolo I will turn on the camera. It should be in a few days
@borispopovich Жыл бұрын
@@matijaflutes sorry, the piccolo video never happened, but the thing is that I switched to magnetic pads, no more glue, burning pads, or making a mess. They can be shimmed like normal pads. My patent filed two years ago :)
