This video reminds me of the book‘convenience store woman,’ one of my favorite books. There definitely should be no job hierarchy or job shaming.

Very well said! I've the exact same mentality as you. My definition of a true successful life is to have a balance of these five things: Family, health, career, friendship and passion (like hobbies or religion). I'm in my late 40s and have achieved all these five things. However, my significant other wants me to go higher in the corporate ladder, which I'm so reluctant to do. This is because I know I'll start to lose other things in my life as I move higher, and the worst is that the rewards from moving higher do not translate to more happiness.

This world system works against what humans really need. Nowadays! The mindset of the whole world is so wrong about economy, society and growth. We lost the purpose of life. We become like machines. We just want more. Selfishness is rising. Everyone wants to live separately with themselves, ignoring the world's need. If we keep thinking about only ourselves, evil people will succeed. People don't understand the scenarios of what's happening to the world. This is a life of wasting resources and energies in order to fulfill The greed that made human like animals. We've built fake civilizations, countries, economies. We need to focus on the purpose of life itself. We need to focus on people. and what about death and after death? . Are we just random or a coincidence? "impossible. there must be a life after we die, there must be a creator of this world. Believe me, by Allah "God" we can solve all the problems of humanity in just few months. As humans, We're not poor anymore, it's just the lifestyle that we live by. The waste productions" over producing ", the waste consumption" over consuming, the order of the money "the whole economy". People keep wanting to have money without thinking about the cons and the pros. Governments keep making things that societies Don't need at all. I'm tired of this world.

Thanks for this wrap-up! Reminds me that I should pick up Catskull again that I neglected cos I dip in and out of books all the time. Loved Kirsten Han's book and agree that it was not very tight, but perhaps that's why I enjoy it, cos I too write in a sort of stream-of-consciousness manner. Sad that I didn't manage to catch Hotel after hearing all the rave reviews, so might also consider getting the book at some point, hopefully they'll put it up again. Take care and all the best with your day job. :)

I remember when the word "ambitious" was a pejorative. You didn't want to get involved with an ambitious person. It was common knowledge that, in their journey to conquer the world, you'll be left in their wake, as a spouse, colleague, or even friend. Our culture has become so toxified with corporate messaging over the last 20 years, people have been indoctrinated to think that ambition is a healthy mindset to embrace. The sooner we snap out of it the better.

Hi! It's great to see you back 😊 thank you for the book reviews, I especially like the sound of A Flat Place. Hopefully I can track it down. Two books I have read recently and enjoyed are: 1. CCCP: Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed by Frédéric Chaubin. It's an architecture book about Soviet constructions, with some essays explaining how they came about. Really nice to dip in and out of as well. 2. A Clear Flowing Yarra by Harry Saddler. Local book for my city, about river ecology, and the wildlife the author has found in surprisingly urban places. It was a great read because it is optimistic! And it's a relief to be reading about the environment in a realistic but hopeful way, with stories about how many people care deeply about making positive changes. Anyway! Thank you again for the great video and all the best 😊

Out of the wreckage by George Monbiot was that? I am interested to know your thoughts on it, I was thinking of trying it, even though I know its a bit of an older book now. I loved his book Feral and he's a great journalist, I think anyway.
