Having the extra zing of a motor makes the normally mundane Zac's look neat... I still think if they put a Y at 2:18 that gave a left side option that went down hill, connecting to Varley's to give a full downhill run to the top of Makara rd then a new track across the road running DH to K2 (Even better if they reversed K2...) then we would have an option to run a full freeride down to the park without that pinch climb at 2:19

u should really hit the kicker at 0:34, its a fairly smooth transition step up I have a feeling can be hit at near any speed and fairly straight runoff. 0:47 I'm waiting for the day someone mistakes this for a jump... The drop at 1:41 I avoided a couple of times until I walked it.. it seems a lot straighter entry into the next right, and the landing is quite smooth... 2:54 I really don't like this left hander.. it is probably the only thing I really dislike.. and can be remedied fairly simply... cut away the left side of the track and give it a lower left camber... water will flow from right to left and not dig out a trench right where we should be riding, instead theres that moment of sweat (I can hear your brakes engage) when you realise the track is wide... but theres actually not a safe path on the right... and thats where we're heading... Brake and yank it left... not smooth... Actually another fix would be a high berm on the right entering the corner forcing the exit more left... it could even exit as a step down as the speed "Should" be quite good there (Instead once your used to it you remember.. "This is "That corner, jam on the brakes and break left making it an off camber rocky front wheel loaded feature... I think my bike would survive running wide into the ditch.. only 26" wheels but 7" suspension... and my "Get off the brakes at the last second, Ride it through, hang on, stay with the bike... and hope" technique you get from riding motor cross bikes may help me... but then again I am quite mediocre in my style having really taken on proper DH in 2019.. and only really learned to drop the bike not me into corners (which on a MX bike you are one with the angle of the bike... and on road bikes you drop and leave the bike above.... But a less confidant rider that may even have walked a drop or 2 back up the track and remembers the rest of the track being a lot easier... then THIS... 3:40 Have you done that drop... it's fairly flat & leaves me a nice straight line choice off the next drop. 3:46 What say you in this left hander... It seems a little steep on the entry and kills the flow, then accelerates you a little too fast into the next right hand kink.. I'd dig about 2ft out of the top of the corner removing a sort of pinch climb into a ditch turn (because it slows riders down most end taking the low (inside) line, digging the trench deeper as they feather the brakes down the steep exit. I don't seem to be trying to shoulder barge the tree on the left behind the sign as much.. maybe I'm getting used to it... Or just slowing down even more... 5:05 have you tried hitting this Kicker on the left.. It looks way too steep but seems quite smooth to hit.. I still brace but question why when I pass over it without issue... 5:18 Seems that little lump of root on the highline into this has finally worn down. I wonder how many crashed trying to avoid it or collected it with the front.. 6:47 Man this is getting cut up at the moment... I feel if I fell off on that run into the right hander, I may not be able to climb back out of the ruts...

Haha so many questions. I don’t do the kickers when I can avoid them when I’m on the clock, but when I cruise down more relaxed I enjoy taking every one of them. Yes watching the footage from my couch it seems there is a lot room for improvements on upper pohatu. I’ve only ridden it 3 times now, but sure the first three tables are perfectly doable. I’m working on improving the berms as that’s where I lose most of my speed. Otherwise it’s just for fun and I try to stay on the bike. A colleague of mine recently came off and punctured his lungs with his ribs which was a “nice” reminder to keep it real. Next weekend is k-hole session, never done it but looks awesome on the videos

You know your on Red Rocks shrapnel when your wheels are constantly going 'PING' as they spit out a rock. I did this on my Foes a couple of years back and blew through my rear break hose at the top. We used to ride trail bikes up the hills all the time (away from everyone) before they shut it off for MTB and walkers... so we had to ride on the coast road with all the public... sigh. Wellington coast is extremely hard on tyres.
@FlorianBosselmann3 жыл бұрын
Haha yes, I don’t want to think about how many tires I left on this track. And wheels actually. You ripped a brake hose? How? From the braking or by smashing a rock though it?
@TheButlerNZ3 жыл бұрын
@@FlorianBosselmann The rear line wasn't properly retained and it was touching the tyre... Wore through as I started down.. 1:12 I would never get a good time on Nth Face... Some one stuck an uphill in it (my arch nemesis)... 1:38 Boooo you skirted the drop... q8D 2:59 I find if you managed to complete the table into this corner you land on the brakes into the hollow and thread the left fine... If you land atop the table, your light on the downside, stuffing the breaking into the left and ruining the whole set. It's the one jump I try not to be too mediocre into. 5:04 another 'dropped opportunity' q8) 7:13 ... not your favourite features huh. 7:24 I so wish they would build up the final berm... I'm usually on the way home if I'm doing Starfish.. and it just seems to be an effort getting round that low lip after such a fast entry.. and I'm too tired to get a good line... A great run... If only I had the energy to pump it from top to bottom... I really really love all the drops on Starfish now.
@FlorianBosselmann3 жыл бұрын
I actually tried to keep it easy this time. I thought I had a good run on Pohatu and Starfish came out pretty good too in terms of time but as you observed, I tied to avoid anything that could mess up the ride, including going too fast :) Actually I thought going much slower next time and enjoy all the features thoroughly rather than blazing down too fast. True I really dont like the pesky pedalling parts neither on Peak Flow nor Northface, but hey, they are for free :) THats what I actually like about Ridgeline once you get past the first bit.

My home ground (I've been riding this over 30 years) 2:30 My favourite jump line... I've done it on a steel Milazo Crazyhorse in the wind and had the wheels blow sideways from under me (but landed ok). Ran out of rear brakes at that speed into the next right corner downhill (2:50)... fun. Theres an old left spur at 3:41 that takes you into the back of the coral on your left at 14:14 but I last rode that in the 80's so it will be long gorse'd over. You can still ride the hill to the left at 4:46 and come back out at 5:10. at 5:16 you can go straight instead of turning left and you drop down into the valley (though not much point unless your headed to the Wrights hill gun right hand sighting station (The left is above the Airport SE end). The fort is down the track to the left of the ridge of trees in the distance. (Above Devils Gate.. You would need to carry the bike down the last section to come out at the hut 2nd across the creek 9:33 blue shack in the distance. I take it you have ridden the bike track exit to the last section (on your right at the sign @ 6:18). There used to be a rocky run on your right at 8:00 (if still accessible it would be a G5) that crosses the track at 8:41 into the upper of the 2 shoots (You took the main (lower) one. We used to ride trailbikes there since the 80's before they shut us out for the huge amount of MTB's (and buldozed one of the most scenic sections at the bottom of the track from 5:16.. 20 years later it has almost got back to the tight twisty creek following run it was... No mountain biker rides that valley more than once... you can't ride out, the tracks are too gravvely.
@FlorianBosselmann3 жыл бұрын
wow, I knew Wellington tracks are sometimes quite a bit older, but 80s?? :) Definitely one of my favs and yes, the track back to the carpark from the Owhiro Valey Split (2:05) is fully overgrown. I carried my bike down once because I had a flat and when I got out my friend who picked me up asked if I had a crash - I was dripping blood from the the gorse. The rest of the track is fab, just costs alot of tires and rims if you push it too hard!
@TheButlerNZ3 жыл бұрын
@@FlorianBosselmann There was a big earthworks wall of dirt half way back along the ridge from the 2:05 turn that i just let my Milazo go bu itself... and it badly dented the old 10speed style forks... led to my 1st upgrade.. I made some old bent rockshox fit with a stem I lathed up. Wish I kept that ol rusty thing. Turns out a LOT of NZ bikers started on a Milazo Crazyhorse... On the motorbikes we used to go down a track that is now a near sheer cliff. last time we went down they had bulldozed the bottom away. managed to stop but fun getting a trailbike down a 5ft sheer cut at the bottom of a 45deg slope... so I burnt my wrist on the exhaust... We used to ride UP from the spooky creek end (the creek crossing at the gate). So have you ridden the MTB section just before the redrocks exit then?

@@TheButlerNZ I suppose you’ve heard about the proposal which is at the council for discussion to turn this area into a huge bike park? 3 tip track adjacent downhills, one uphill climb and 2 lines down to red rocks. That would be epic!
@TheButlerNZ3 жыл бұрын
@@FlorianBosselmann Ha.. My mate was looking the the peak just as you turn off the tip track onto Red Rocks and said he'd love to make a downhill track to the saddle above the corral.. And I was looking at the tip road side of the tip track and thinking what they need is a lower angle single track uphill that zigzaggs up the 2 valleys either side of the corral to keep the climb bareable.... then a ridge run above the existing tip track from the corral to the Owhiro Bay road... A lot of rock to dig though... And then the RedRocks run could do with a single track shadow that runs on the west side of the ridge and joins at the top of the roll into the jump @ 2:30 I guess theres only so much money to spend... I just want a skills/drop park on Murchison St across the road from the Tip Track gate.
