I feel like josm gives the freeform editing too but the presets menu and other tools can keep design more focused on following community trends and even gives some autofill for common brands like starbucks. I was using id just to autofill some brand details and josm for main edits before I properly realized it was there too.

That's awesome if you know the creator personally. Their work has a good and useful goal. Remember as a regular mapper that if you find you have needs/likes/dislikes/problems with the program that your feedback can be quite useful to further improve it.

I always think of this as a street complete/scee type of program but its definitely different and another good tool. It is also available on fdroid (though some openstreetmap programs are altered/limited on there). You may find some programs worth trying to capture images/video while you do Every Door recording work. If still not successful then you should be able to split screen or popup window a camera program to the same screen. Last would be a separate camera (action/phone/etc.) if still trying to get it; I'd understand if the burden is enough to make you not want to do that too. You seem to know it but if anyone doesn't know or as a reminder, phone GPS + indoors can commonly place the location wrong so its good if you can have prearranged references: exit locations + known distances,, roof air conditioners, skylights, other externally referable building features to refer to or match with satellite view. As you go between layers, known objects may be usable as additional distance verifications when you can see from floor to floor (big floor openings). I've also counted steps to create known measurements. If you have internet and everydoor doesn't let you move objects (thought it did), you could always use id, vespucci, etc. to move it on the phone with an upload+download step. Any of this workflow is still better than where I often make a private osmand note and map it on PC later. I've put off mapping too long recently and have a lot of notes to get through which is annoying for me and less helpful for others; skipping steps that stall the workflow is usually the better way. Similarly I haven't been on here much in a long time so I have a few videos to get to watching.

You mentioned mapping defibrillators, have you considered taking pictures of them both closed up and far away and adding them to open street map using Mapcomplete? I'm going through my watch later list, and it's nice having your videos on my second monitor

Rather than Map Complete, I prefer using my camera app and a gps-recording app because I'm not that challenge-focused when mapping. Also, I like that I don't have to worry about people in my photos as I don't post them anywhere. If I think it would help I put some information in the description tag to assist finding the defib., but I think there's a better tag for that (location?)

Welcom to Scotland. Did wonder if you'd moved up here after seeing some of your nearby notes. As a word of encouragment, I learnt to use JOSM using your vids. In your future vids how about covering which tools you're using? I've started using EveryDoor but can't find any real guides on using it.

Thanks! I'm planning an EveryDoor video, because I've been using it a lot lately. Personally video guides have been something I've avoided because I thought other people did them and I get so perfectionist about the editing/graphics that I burn out (without ever creating a perfect video). It's worth me having a think about it though, watch this space. - Gregory.

In some videos I say the keyboard shortcuts out loud, but it really is difficult to get into that habit. I've been unable to find a good/easy on-screen keyboard for Linux/Ubuntu that would get included int he film recordings. I could try having another look though.

Looking forward to the next half of this mapping session. I've thought I should put together a video of using Google Maps showing adding and correcting things because Google has them and OSM doesn't, then show on the street private imagery/video that shows either undoing it or further refining it to be correct instead of following Google's errors. Amazing how people I know follow Google Maps instead of going straight to the source for location, opening hours, etc. then surprised when the info is wrong.

The Northampton editing video is a super-edition long one, already queued up for 20th April. It's one thing to teach "we shouldn't/can't use Google data or streetview into OpenStreetMap because of legal reasons", it's another lesson to teach "there's no reason that data is correct anyway".

Instead of just notes, I've seen amazon edits in my area. Seemed to be the friendly mapping type that will explain edits, take feedback to improve, etc. So many notes around my city are just anonymous entries; no way to get feedback about something that doesn't make sense in a note.

It's fascinating watching another experienced mapper using JOSM to add ground survey detail to an area I'd contributed to. The explicit source=ESRI tag worked to give you the hint to check other imagery sources for extra detail 🙂 Two suggestions if I may?: * try the `terracer` JOSM plug-in to easily split semi-detached buildings into two (or terraced into 20... just press 'T'). * the 'q' tool is handy to orthogonalise buildings after manual splitting (breaks 45deg corner conservatories though). The address pre-set tool has recently gained a +1 / -1 function to automate addr:house_number tagging, but it isn't really easier than manual tags (especially with survey data pre-populated). Now off to try keypad mapper.... (every day is an opportunity to learn new methods). Happy Mapping (and making YT videos!), James
@MapperDiaries
@MapperDiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. I've used the terracer plugin in the past, it was really good and helpful. I more prefer the house numbers as nodes style of mapping, and although the buildings an still be mapped as inidividual-but-ajoining areas, I often leave that fiddly-ness to people that like to get all the extensions and odd-shapes correct! I'm terrible at remembering the 'q' tool to orthogonalise. That's why I prefer 'b' tool (requires building plugin?) so the area is square to start with.
@mirror1766
@mirror1766 2 жыл бұрын
Though I wish some edits weren't accelerated as I watch over the technique to learn from, others may prefer the speed. Always interesting to see which tools mappers use like how sometimes you manually add nodes to make a building, sometimes you used building plugin and merge 2 overlapped traces, and sometimes you take a group of misplaced nodes within a building and drag them leaving the rest as is. I normally try to merge address details onto the building unless it has multiple addresses and is not subdivided. Your way makes getting to an entrance easy from a routing standpoint but I'd assume renderers are harder to write that will label the node while avoiding wall interference. Routers with my way need to look for building entrances and try to connect the user there.

Speeding parts of videos is an attempt to please everyone, and keep them closer to 14 minutes than 14 hours! I tend to speed sections that are either me fumbling or are mapping aspects I've done before, so if you watch enough of my videos you'll hear me talk about why I'm doing things! - Gregory
@MapperDiaries
@MapperDiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Addresses as nodes or addresses on building outlines, so much debate even on my videos. Best option is to follow what is already done in an area. Personally I prefer mapping them as nodes now, for several reasons. We shouldn't worry too much about renderers, but they can simply display numbers on top of the buildings. If it's difficult to read then the walls should be a faintest style or the numbering can be drawn with an outline. - Gregory.

I find it depends a bit on what you want to survey. Driving around in a housing estate surveying house numbers is a bit more suspicious than walking around and being able to engage with residents. Surveying cycling things is best done on a bicycle, public transport on public transport etc. A car is good for mapillary or highways, if they still need to be surveyed.

In JOSM there is the 'split object' feature (alt+x) in plugin utilsplugin2 when you select 2 nodes which I use to split 1 building into 2 at a manually selected location. Terracer and gridify also offer options to it. Did you just manually break the building area and create two new building areas to split the buildings with 2 addresses?

Addesses on nodes are good ideas, why do you deleted them? In the future all the buliding will get color of the house, height, floors etc. So leave the addresse on the nodes, it do not look so fine, but we do not map for beauty.
@MapperDiaries
@MapperDiaries 3 жыл бұрын
I try to match how it has been mapped before in the area, in this case some building outlines had house numbers. The numbered nodes were not in OpenStreetMap, they were a file exported from KeypadMapper. I did not delete those nodes from OSM as they didn't exist there. I am preferring use of nodes. It makes it faster for me. It also benefits a bit what you said, if(not certain they will) the building gets tagged with other information and possibly divided into parts. The house number node can be positioned to the side of the house of the main entrance is really helpful too.

This coming summer, my goal is to thoroughly document every Orthodox church in my region, as much as possible in OpenStreetMap; I want to improve parking info, nearby way accuracy, and rules about things like whether they are masky, or if they prohibit the carry of firearms (which can vary a bit from place to place). I was rather frustrated when travelling the U.S. this year, when I would go to find a church or chapel, and find that it no longer exists or has moved.
