I bought an 'Island' foamie as my first surfboard and I dont really want to grow up and go to a fibreglass board. only problem is heat causes bubbles which is a problem in summer.

I agree, the Leah rope is too long on bigger waves it will cut through the board, there is a reason they make the rail saver that is attached to the para cord, I bought a better ultra light leash and just attach it to the loop which is the second loop under where they expect you to attach the original para cord to which the leash is attached.

@@edfeuer8462 Pay no mind. People appreciate you posting. I've got 4 other boards, all of 'em have their advantages/disadvantages-- this baby is overall fun. As mentioned, I surf a reefy place and the durability of the hard plastic bottom alone ( not having to patch so much ) and not have to worry about damaging my $1000 board, makes it F-u-n.

Are you all keeping the black tail guard on? Or is it just for shipping purposes. Seems to have sharp edges that could cause some unneeded injury. I'm thinking of taking it off and filling in the screw holes with caulk? Thoughts?
@edfeuer8462
@edfeuer8462 2 жыл бұрын
It's a functional part of the board. Tail-blocks were popular in the 60s on the old longboards. The foam tails tend to lose their shape.

I took mine off a year ago. It has some exposed holes ya gotta plug up. I gorilla glued all screw holes and edges of plastic 'fabric' ( not visible behind orginal tailblock) and cut out a flexible rubber mat to replace the original tailblock. glued that baby water tight. That original tailblock has edge sticking out, so I figured less resistance with it gone. I replaced the flexy fins with stiffer fins. I like it better. So far, 3'-4' with smooth faces works the best. I surf a reefy place and that hard plastic bottom saved many hours repairing dings like my old fiber glass board. Overall, a little bouncy in white water and you can't crank a hard turn ( after the initial cutback into the white water- gotta go a little easier- rail a bit too fat ) like a thinner epoxy or fiber glass board. Easy paddle into the wave ( nice glide). Can't beat it for a fun board.

If you attached the leash rope that way, it will cut thru the rail like a rope saw. Best to put the leash rope to the side and just attached the "rail saver" directly to the nylon webbing loop. If you don't want to do that, double over the leash rope evenly, then at least pass the rail saver thru both ends of the leash rope to shorten the length.

I love this board! Costco had it for 99 about a month ago again, and that’s when I got it. But it has sold out again. You do need to keep going and checking as they sell out fast.

We ride proper fiberglass logs but when my wife and daughters surf Doheny we ride softboards because of the high probability that someone is going to crash into your glassed board. The tail block and FCS setup give a more rigid tail with a hard edge that makes turning more responsive. No shame for me riding this soft top out at Doho, these things are fun and I use my proper logs when I surf San O or the Bu.
