Question: so I want to incorporate the B-sides of Liberation Transmission (specifically Dead to Me, Ordinary Life, No Way Out, Love, Distances, What You Do, and Every Song) into the tracklisting for the main album, and arrange the album accordingly (especially as I may very well download the album or at least set up a playlist on Apple Music). What order would you recommend (I do not want to change the order of the original 12 songs relative to each other though)? I would not place the B-sides directly after the singles in the tracklisting, and nor do I want to place all 7 of them right at the very end, so I would like to know an order that would make sense…any suggestions?

How haunting are the lyrics of this song? Read the lyrics to this song and tell me he’s not singing about himself? “ live in hypocrisy those skies are always sunny. You’re never gonna be a threat to anybody? So split. Oh, you can run to you’re done, but the shame will never leave you? Had your fun Was it worth all the time getting people to believe you? Open your eyes and see it never was that funny you’re never gonna be a threat to anybody? You’re lying you’re lying you’re gonna be the one left crying? Holy shit, haunting, sick, motherfucker. I feel sorry for the band. They made some great music and he was actually a great singer but a monster of a human being. I almost feel dirty, listening to the song.

The final moments of the good Ian Watkins before he turned into the worst version of him… :,(
@phunkymonkiee

This was filmed around the time that he committed the worst of his crimes, and he had been a druggie degen who abused minors since as far back as 2007. He also looks strung out from a drug binge here in the video, with sunken eyes, which would be consistent with how his bandmates and those who knew him said he was at this time. He'd be arrested just a few months later.

@@phunkymonkiee True. This video is from the end of 2012, he had already committed all the atrocities and was addicted to hard drugs. He looks tired, defeated, and worried in the video. He probably already knew that things were going to fall apart for him.

If we include B-sides and bonus tracks as part of albums (but not the Weapons Garage Sessions bonus tracks (The Dead, Save Yourself, IYDSFSYFFA, and Weapon) because those were recorded in 2007 and fit more on The Betrayed-they were actually on the original scrapped version and thus I would count those 4 songs as part of The Betrayed rather than Weapons), then I would say that Liberation Transmission is their overall best even if The Betrayed’s album cycle has my single favorite Lostprophets song (Save Yourself), especially as it is their most varied album, with stuff that sounds like everything from Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Ok Go, All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, (early) Panic! at the Disco, (A Beautiful Lie-era) 30 Seconds to Mars, Green Day, Blink-182, (Black Holes and Revelations-era) Muse, (early) Coldplay, Oasis, Goo Goo Dolls, Breaking Benjamin, you name it… I especially like how the band was willing to experiment more on the B-sides (like the very Muse-esque Dead to Me, or the Britpop/post-Britpop stylings of Every Song) than in previous album cycles (by contrast, while good the Start Something B-sides essentially just felt like more Start Something)…

Thanks for posting these Pinkpop clips, I was hoping they'd be good quality videos when I saw the thumbnails but this is just fine. It helps fill in the gaps a bit... I wrote a whole book in the comments before I realized I should keep that to myself haha. This band still haunts me, so thank you for bringing the old and new stuff, whatever it is.

This is why I love Mixolydian b6 songwriting (which this song has, it is in an implied Eb Mixolydian b6)-flipping the minor tonic chord to major can really make song sections, especially choruses, feel so much more epic…Also I have listened to a lot of Lostprophets and noticed certain songwriting techniques that repeat a lot and that make their music sound different from other alternative bands…like how the chorus basically ALWAYS emphasizes the tonic and/or dominant of relative major and makes those the high notes of the chorus (or of relative minor if the song is implied to be in harmonic minor, or of the note one semitone above relative major’s tonic if the song is in implied Mixolydian b6)…as well as having the guitar strumming and vocals contradict each other in terms of rhythm speed and note values (actually this is why Weapons (and about half of The Betrayed) feels a bit “phoned in”-because when Ian started doing drugs and leading a double life, a lot of the more interesting songwriting tricks began to disappear-especially as Ian used to be something of a perfectionist)…

For real, Every Song (the B-side) feels quite sad in hindsight, in that it feels like the last gasp of the sane, sober, normal, healthy Ian...just before he started his descent into hell that he is now in prison for. If only things could have been different, especially as his voice is so beautiful on this song (and with an incredibly strong delivery, I think he blasted out a belted and sustained D5 on the word "every" in the chorus, with repetitions 2, 4, and 6 being D5-C#5 descending belts). Really, it's like the last remains of the old him (before he started his descent into depravity) are saying "goodbye, you'll miss me when I'm gone"

I love this song but for a while I found it hard to listen to because it’s clearly about Ian taunting Joanna for reporting him to the police for his crimes, but I love it all over again now by putting it in a different light of the arsenal being completely turned against him in the end.
