I recall this show when I was a kid. Saturday mornings were so wonderful. And The Hurricane Song may be sugary-pop but it was still better than most of the noise you hear these days.

Regarding the post nominals. “psm” is “post school of music”. It was a qualification that British Army Bandmasters had to take if they wanted to promote/commission beyond the rank of WO1 to become a Director of Music. It was a military qualification from the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.

I think the album is great, however, their new look and album cover, were terrible, ghastly mistakes.

You obviously haven’t heard The Shaggs. Their album “Philosophy of the World” makes this album absolutely sound operatic by comparison. It was common in the 50s and 60s for TV and movie actors who could act but not sing to record and release LPs. This was because the studio system of the day, which they’d signed contracts with, was trying to get every penny they could out of their actors. So they forced them to record so they’d have more product to sell. Another reason is that there was a perception by the public that if someone was famous and good at what they did (act) then they should be good at anything else (sing). It was a form of idol worship-they could do no wrong in the public’s eyes. Two more examples of this are Jack Webb (of Dragnet fame) and Patty Duke. Patty Duke’s singing in “Valley of the Dolls” was so bad that they were forced to overdub someone else’s vocals over it. There are several videos on KZbin that you can check out that illustrate this. So put these two things together, and you have a collection of albums that don’t even belong at the thrift store, but the dump.

That's not a UFO on the cover it's a scene from the movie Forbidden Planet of the The United Planet Cruiser C-57D landing on Altair IV. The same 1956 movie that brought us Robby the Robot. Oddly enough a movie that heavily used a theremin score.

I was a Happy Days fan and I had a lot of fun with this album as an 11 year old in 1976. It gives you a long version of the Happy Day theme, which is required on this type of record. The classic '50s songs were cool and entertaining and were sometimes used in the early shows. Of course I did mainly play side one over and over. The Fonzarelli slide and impressionist tracks are bad, but fun in a bad sort of way. The back cover of the album has a picture of the wall that had the graffiti on it that is briefly seen in the show's intro. And yes I used to stand the record up using the little support on the back like a framed photo. Problem with the cover picture is Fonzie would never have a button on this jacket and that was only added to the picture not on the actual jacket Also this is a period of time post American Graffiti and there was a definite '50s nostalgia thing happening that this show helped continue well into the '80s.

Sadly, Larry is not with us anymore. Same thing got him, that took a lot of other people. Take Me Home With You IS the stand-out song on this album, on the cast album, in the show, and it holds up to this day. The lyrics work for us hetero's just as well. Had the chance to meet Larry when the show was in DC, have a couple drinks and conversation, and he truly was, a Great Guy.

I doubt how you listen to it would make a difference. It's Carlton deliberately trying to be as commercial as possible. I think he was also trying to appeal to the New Age market, as New Age was getting very popular.

I have it on cd as well on vinyl, I don't remember when or where I found it on vinyl though. Maybe played it a couple of times. Prefer the older Village People so maybe that's why it was such a disappointment. The album from 1982 was better but I think the last album from 1985 is the best songs nce their 70s output.

@@vinylsigns6891 According to discogs it's been re-released on cd a few times since the end of the 90s. My copy is from 2002 on Traffic Trading. As most of the others with a different cover that isn't as bad as the original cover.
@DemonWarp65 Жыл бұрын
I think that with the right guidance and songwriting, they could have truly embraced new wave and carried their camp aesthetics forward, using the same theatrics as The Tubes and D E V O. Regardless how you feel about disco, The Village People had solid vocals, and they could have carried their music forward if they just had the right resources to help them evolve with the times.

I have known Randy Jones, "The Cowboy" from the VP since around 2000 when I was 19 (I'm straight befire the question is asked) and am pretty sure he wasnt around for this go around. Never even heard of this album before and yeah, it really isnt even bad. Like you said it has that melange of New Wave/Romantic and (poorly) attempted punk that make it fun. Outside of the awful beard tux, the two side profiles on the front arent any worse than Human League or any of that era stuff. Compared to the flaming war crime that was "Cant Stop the Music" this is a masterpiece
@vinylsigns6891 Жыл бұрын

@Vinyl Signs I will tell him, seeing him next week at this guy Noel Ashmans birthday. I stopped going out a ton when I hit 28, Randy is probably pushing 70 and still heads out with his nephew, Keith several times a week. Really fun guy, you should reach out to him, he loves talking and would do an album review with you. I suggest "Cant Stop the Music" lol. Amazing how late to the game Hollywood was with The Apple, Xanadu, Can't Stop the Music and about 10 other early 80s films. Disco was already dying in 77 before Saturnight Fever, the soundtrack and great movie added maybe a year of legs. But by 1980 nobody wanted to see anything disco
