Did you have to remove wheel liners? Did you jack both sides? Do you recommend replacing shock at same time? My MK 7 Golf has 70k miles. rear speings are broken. Shocks have never been replaced.
@SawsmithАй бұрын
Hi - You only have to remove the liners if you're replacing the shocks and you shouldn't need to replace these unless they're leaking or knocking. You can jack one side at a time. I hope this helps.

Hi - There is no fluid. It's an electric power steering system. The motor that drives it is attached to the steering column.

couldn't remove the full size under tray on my Mk1 3008 so, using a jig saw, I cut a small hole directly under the sump plug, saves a great deal of cursing whilst try to remove seized up hex screws from spring nuts. Oil filters are also different from the later models.

Easier still - reach with your fingers through the round hole in the body left by the rubber bung and the boot light after taking off the clip-on trim that holds it in place. A 5 minute job without prying open all that trim or rewiring.

Hi - You can use a small connecting block to connect the wires. It's just that soldering makes a more secure and permanent connection.

@Sawsmith Жыл бұрын
You obviously haven't tried.
@DubStu4 ай бұрын
Touching the bodywork with a metal tool and the battery still connected is not going to “light your eyes up”. Absolute worst case a fuse may pop, but even that is very unlikely, considering the only thing you are doing is removing a single screw from a plastic surround. Also, soldered connections in a vehicle are prone to breaking due to vibration, so not the most recommended method; in this case going through the boot is not too onerous to warrant chopping the wiring…

Hi John. Love the enginuity on undoing that tensioner! Couple of questions.... Has yours had a new chain already? Was your tensioner duff? Why/what symptoms did it put up? We've got a 14 plate thp, had a chain at 11k (peugeot job). Now I'm getting super knock on the obd and don't know if it's the chain or carbonated valves. But of a conundrum... 🤣
@Sawsmith2 жыл бұрын
Hi - I don't know the history of the tensioner that I replaced unfortunately, so don't know how long it had been on the engine. As far as I know it's the original chain, but these are a well known weak point. So far the replacement tensioner has done the job. I would have thought that the 'knock' that you refer too would be there all the time if it was a problem with the valves. The tensioner noise (more like a heavy rattle) normally gets quieter or goes away as the engine warms.
@egon28752 жыл бұрын
@@Sawsmith thanks John. Yeah it sounded hideous when we had it done under warranty. Simplex chain isn't ideal really, is it? Still, not bad when they're working properly! 🤣
@evieemaya882 жыл бұрын
Great video mate, the old and new new tensioner, is it a simple matter of unscrewing old and screwing in the new and then torque to correct specs or domyou need to time the engine and lock the cams as if you were doing a timing chain / belt.job?
@Sawsmith2 жыл бұрын
Yes to the first part of your question and the camshafts and crankshaft don't need locking as nothing is moved. There should be no chance of the chain jumping.
@bendude67482 жыл бұрын
What’s the deal with these? Can you just replace the tensioner when they rattle when cold or does it also need a chain?
@Sawsmith2 жыл бұрын
Hi - You can just replace the tensioner (ebay) and see of that cures the problem. Good luck.

Found a pretty good wing (white) at a scrappie and started to remove it using your excellent guidance. The engine of the donor van has been removed already, along with many other bits and bobs, giving me an easier ride. I ran out of time to get it off but hoping I get it tomorrow. I've had a problem with the 3 x screws holding the inner, wheel-arch trim/valance and that really slowed me down. I was tempted just to force it off, not needing the donor van valance, but then I thought I'd maybe bend or break the wing tabs and give myself future probs. I'll persevere. My Connect's 14 years old now, I paid about £3.5k for it at auction in BCA Glasgow, an ex-fleet van, it was 4 years old - a bargain. That old van owes me nothing. I've had it 10-and-a-half years and it's done 155k, slept in it when I buggered-off to France and Spain for a month in 2014. I was seriously ready to scrap it after it needed £400 to get it through its MOT (another £400, same as last time) and I reckoned it was time to pay for another ex-fleet van at auction, so I let the TAX, Ins and MOT lapse. But, mostly since Covid, prices have rocketed for ex-fleet vans - and they can stick those prices up their arse. Furthermore, I'm reading online that BCA are saying there might never be a return to Live auctions, and that only Trade buyers can buy online - that'll be the end of the little buyer then, excluding the average guy and forcing us to fork-out forecourt prices - sharks. The guy doing my MOT (I trust him) said to me after it failed at beginning of Mar this year; "Mate, if you're going to get rid of the van I'll buy it off you".. I reckon my old van's still got mileage and I can justify forking-out another £400 this time, and probably a little more next time, too, rather than pay the £8-9k they want for a similar 4 year old Connect. Incidentally, I got 2 x excellent tyres with good wheels from that donor Connect at that scrappy yesterday (part of my MOT fail), and a rear door handle that I needed after I had a wee accident with the busted one - sorted. Years ago working on cars was very much hit and hope but with YT tutorials like yours, mate, we can tackle just about anything now. That's my dinner ready now, I'll give you peace now. Top-class tutorial, mate 👍

Hi Shane - Yes the chain was rattling when cold. As the oil circulates and pressurises/warms up, it deadens the noise.

Mine sounds rattley on start up then goes away but when im driving and take foot off gas i here a knocking sound coming from front any idea peugout looked and carnt find an issue
@Sawsmith3 жыл бұрын
Hi Derek - Definitely sounds like the timing chain. The sound goes away as the oil pressure rises and the metals expand, taking up the slack. The reason for the knock on gas peddle release is the backlash (slackening) of the chain when it de-tensions. I should just add that your issue would mean a timing chain and tensioner change. The tensioner alone won't correct the problem.
