That wagon would be about $30,000 now, adjusted for inflation. Good luck getting anything of any quality made in yhe states for that now. Closest comparable vehicle would be a grand caravan and they *start* at almost 50k 🤦‍♂️

Being an SS owner since 1974, I have seen, heard, learned quite an amount of B50 tidbits over the years. I only deal with the b50s of the 71-72 years. (though I do have a 1974 tr5mx) At a glance, I would have indicated in your video that your bike has a larger european tank on it. That your front fender brackets are installed upside down causing the fender itself to hover higher over the wheel. Might be just a slip of the tongue when you say they were sold for the 71-73 years as only the B50MX was in the 73 lineup along with the rocket 3. (2 bikes only in 73) Right, yours leaks quite a bit. PIA, but the leak likely eminates from the countershaft sprocket. Mine does not leave a drop even with a month between rides. It weeps and you get blowback behind the engine itself, Having a B50 you end up realizing that the machine oozes a mist of oil from everywhere... generally. Take any other bike that needs to be wiped down with a rag periodicly and compare the ease of cleaning. Your bsa is a fine example of an unmolested unit. The B50 is an amazing athelete when it comes to handling twisty back roads and for me, has out run many a higher horsepower bike just due to cornering. I am no engineer or graduate of physics academy. But it has something to do with the offset hubs countering the engine placement in the frame. And they're so light at what...310lbs? I have low bars and have riden under a parked semi trailer. (dangerous!) I have run the gammit with b50's these last 50 years. Purchased in 74 as a one owner bike they were unknown of by the general population. Even then people would ask what is it. I read once that there was about 6,600 SS's produced. Most of which went to the us market. On the b50.org website you can punch in your vin number and see what port of entry your bike came from. They are a fun bike and a cursed lump too from time to time. In the later 70's and the early 80's the b50 was thought of as the ugly stepchild of the bsa line up. There was a time that no one wanted them. It is only because I bought 7 over the years and have cannablized those others in order to keep my 72 running (and an inventory of replacements) to this day. Last rebuild was finished up in 1999. And I have had to do little but enjoy since. Never a popular bike, they were disposed of early in ownership because the kickstand would bend. (trying to start it on the stand) The fenders would crack the tabs would crack on all the brackets. Tremendous vibration throughout the bike. Along with those lucas connectors and the pain of that box for all the components. Most SS's then were stripped for dirt riding and ruined for ever from being a beautiful classic road bike from a by-gone era such as yours. Here is an older production of "other people's b50's"... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jITRdXSAqbWUkNE Enjoy that thing. To the folks our age you can tell it is a b50, or at least a 441 coming around the corner from a block away due to the "unique above any other" big bore 4 stroke single

I noticed you had a problem selecting gear! To stop this happening, use the kick start, 3 times with the clutch depressed, before starting. Providing the clutch is set up correctly, you will never have this problem again. Beautiful bike, the best square 4 I've seen!

Yes, best to strip the clutch down, clean every plate. Check that all plates are flat, on a piece of thick glass, & put a thin smear of 3 in one oil on them. Once you have the pressure plate fitted, pull the clutch lever in enough to make it slip as you turn the motor over. Slide a feeler gauge behind it, so the gap is equal. If not adjust the spring until it is even. Now you will have a perfect clutch. Take care, & have fun.

I had a Defender and now have a Bronco, and just want to say that the Bronco is utilitarian and deliberately designed with cheaper interior materials to be able to get it dirty, inside and out, and clean it easy. Us Bronco owners do not want fancy leather and wood trim in something we intend to drive through muddy trails and dusty deserts lol. The Interior is VERY easy to clean, even if it gets muddy. I love it. The Defender wasn't up to the punishment on the trails, so I had to get rid of it.
@paulelledge8977
@paulelledge8977 Жыл бұрын
So don't get a defender with leather or carpet. You can get it with cloth and rubber floors, it can be very easy to clean. With the bronco you get about 15% more off-road capability (if you get a sasquatch with locking difs) at the cost of about 35% on road quality. You are right though, the bronco interior is much cheaper.
@lunamaria1048
@lunamaria1048 Жыл бұрын
@@paulelledge8977 You have not so much as sat in either🤔. All your attempts to quantify their performance is telling. The Defender wheel lifts dangerously, off road, like a car would, because it is a fully independent suspension vehicles. It wheel lifts excessively, which is extremely dangerous and leads to rolling off a trail, rolling down a hill, over a bank etc. The Bronco with 35s, disconnecting stability bar to increase front articulation, front and rear diff locks, and the articulation of a rear solid axles, makes it 110% more capable off road than the Defender. Righ off the lot. I didn't buy either for road comfort lol. The Defender is a road car with a few gimmicks lol, so I got rid of it and bought an actual truck based SUV that can handle off road use, like a monster. Nobody buys a trail toy for road comfort 🤣

@@paulelledge8977 Twice now you have deliberately twisted my words... I didn't say "the Defender is Dangerous ".... I said the Defender lifts wheels excessively, off road, which is VERY dangerous. I already explained why. Excessive wheel lifting is DANGEROUS off road. Fully independent suspension vehicles lack sufficient articulation, so wheel lift too much. That gets dangerous, especially climbing up or down steep, rocky, rutted hills, where weight transfers of a lifted wheel dropping into a rut are the main cause roll overs. I wouldn't expect you to understand, because you can't afford either vehicle. And you definitely don't know anything about driving off road, period. Consider my replies a favor lol. ☺🤗
