love was insignificant ? this was not the feudal system. Women had more to say on the marriage than you make out, they could also terminate a marriage if the man were dishonorable. The pre-christian era were not a male dominated culture. The real weight came from the family name, it was important that the social structure were loyal. Accounts have also been written down of women who were fiercer in confrontations than men. When the vikings landed in America and encountered Indians, a woman of the viking tribe were beating her chest with a sword when combat ensued which scared off the indians for a fortnite, before they decided to return. They tried to capture the woman during a night assault, but they were killed by her and she apparently left her husband afterwards because he "hid behind with the ships". This guy was apparently not a warrior, but the woman came from such a family. He were of lower class so she apparently choose him, which wasn't unusual then. Women had the ability to give birth, and the gods they adhered to were also honored in that the choice of a woman were a decree by the gods. The female were not chattel back then amongst the "heathens" but honored and seen as the future of a family. Women were raised not to be commanded but to choose and act wisely as the offspring were the future of the family. Some women swore themselves to different gods, as not all women were content to be housewives. It was a very complex society and hardly everything is understood, but we do know that the medieval feudalistic system were foreign to a people who valued freedom and individual independence. Hence the choices of Gods that people choosed to follow.

Throughout history marriage was always a business venture before a love affair. It was incredible easy to starve to death with a bad harvest even with a good homestead. A new family's existence rested a lot on the parents ability to support them through bad times. Which is why these people's had so much say in setting up the marriage. In Scandinavia there were something called the "poor man's price", a minimum amount of silver a man had to raise and give to the father for the bride in order for the marriage to be legal. Viking women could divorce yes and the financial ramification of this could keep the husband honest, yet such consequences rippled through the entire extended family on which the woman depended.

So many people here are being so critical, as a long time reenactor/living historian (whatever) I'm usually pretty critical of how things are presented as far as accuracy, etc. But from what I can tell this is obviously a student film and was made for many other purposes than exacting historical detail.

Her shawl obviously wouldn't have been plaid though. That's Scottish. The shawls/cloaks would have been a herringbone chain weave, secured with a pin or pennular circle clasp.

The freedom of so called "viking women" were shared within all pagan european native cultures. It was christianity that changed this. Respecting women was always the standard in Europe before the disgusting desert cult started to genocide pagans.

The Vikings sere in Ireland for hundreds of years…. Some of them stayed in Ireland abd were absorbed into society. Any last name of city/town name that ends in “by” is Norse (nordic) amd is from Viking settlements/heritage. Irish people have a significant amount of Nordic ancestry.

Well i think someone had a problem researching because a viking is a raid so VIKING womans will be healers, warriors, or farmers searching for new land. If you ment NORSE woman you should look for something at least related to it, because, for example do you really think that cloak will help you in the harsh -20°C of Sweden's winter? And the norse women were free people independent of parents, brothers and husbands, they could own propperty and marry WHOEVER they wanted because they were free, and the thing of the hair was something of the Christian's middle age, not the pagan one

When addressing the women freedom one ought to address the other side of these issues in the area of responsibility. In Germanic culture, adultery was frowned upon even during pre-Christian times and it would not go any better for a woman committing it than a man. She might even find herself being whipped and her family paying the man and/or his family to assuage her guilt and soothe his wounded honor. Freedoms yes, some ancient form of feminism, most assuredly not. One must be careful not to project our wishes or desires of how our ancestors lived upon how they actually did live, what they actually did believe etc etc.
@FrenchViking4666 жыл бұрын
rs 4h5 Exactly what i want to know?
@moonlily14 жыл бұрын
Well, adultery for WOMEN in the Viking age was severely punished, but NOT men, who could have several mistresses and even bring them into their home to live alongside their wives. Women could, however, live with a man to whom they were not married without becoming outcasts, and there was no social distinction between children born within or outside of wedlock, no concept of "bastards" or laws preventing inheritance in such a case.
@ericdpeerik39282 жыл бұрын
😐 Adultery wasn't at all frowned upon. Norse mythology is full of extramarital activity, sometimes with the husband present. Canut, King of England, Denmark and a few other bits, was well known to have kept his mistress even after marriage, and is said to have called her "the Queen of the North". Sex with, and offspring of, slaves was extremely common. Your statement is utterly ridiculous, besides unnecessary. I expect your next idea is going to be that they only did opposite sex missionary, while you know about the existence of Loki. Our ancestors were not Christians and held none of those values

if anyone points out that viking women had head scarves as a reason to let muslims have the same on exams and work, may I remind that these were for a practical purpose and had no restriction of when to wear, only a purpose.
@stevejohnson68588 жыл бұрын
Young unmarried women let their hair down while married females would most often keep theirs tied up in head cover. This was neither Muslim nor even Christian influence but pagan/heathen Norse culture.

Islam makes women wear that scarf all the time, Vikings don't always have to wear that. Besides Islam would have destroyed the beautiful culture and religion of the Vikings because they are "infidels."
@FunSizeSpamberguesa6 жыл бұрын
Islam doesn't "make" women wear a hijab -- there are plenty of Muslim women who don't wear one. If you want to get technical, Christian and Jewish women are also supposed to cover their hair, but only the Orthodox/fundamentalist actually do. It's a choice a woman makes, and there's literally no reason a woman who chooses to wear one shouldn't be allowed to cover her hair at school or work.
