You have two possible issues. One is your spring is now bent from hard use, confused with settling. Steel shouldn't settle. Cold bending it back work hardens the steel, it now could break under load. Second issue is you want a new arch but it isn't damaged. If you bend it cold you have now introduced an overload and damaged the spring. Can you, yes. Could it cause a failure? Yes.
@EatonDetroitSpring16 күн бұрын
wrong, spring steel will settle with use. It is a natural process, called fatigue. As anything from paper to steel flexes it very, very, very slowly looses strength and eventually will break. to prove this point, put your thumbs together and hold a piece of cardboard between your hands. Then bend it back and forth. It will not take too long and fatigue marks will show and soon the cardboard will break. Same thing happens with a steel spring, it just takes a lot longer. Cold working the steel can harden it, cold bending will not.

That's a great video. quickly explaining the process. I love your machinery 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'! A question please, what is the hardness value of a tempered spring?

You seem to have forgotten one very important thing, and that is on a custom set of spring, specially going from different types of Springs that rear eye measurement needs to go from the desired shackle angle that your building to.
@EatonDetroitSpring2 ай бұрын
No, we did not forget it, you are the one doing the measuring so it is up to you to make sure you give us the correct measurement to get the shackle at a 15 degree angle when the vehicle is at curb weight.

Are trailer leaf springs supposed to be more flatter than bow shaped compared to truck leaf springs? Thanks.
@EatonDetroitSpring5 ай бұрын
A leaf does not care which way it bows. the final shape, smiling or frowning, depends on the design of the spring. However, most trailer springs are designed to be smiling.

Does it matter which direction the spring faces?
@EatonDetroitSpring5 ай бұрын
Which way the spring goes depends on the vehicle and the spring design. Most springs have a short and long end. That is, the distance from the center bolt to the eyes are not equal. And for the vast majority of this style spring the shorter end goes to the front. Should the spring be of the design where both ends are equal, the end with the steel encased rubber bushing would go to the front.

@shanefrank32816 ай бұрын
@@EatonDetroitSpring it is a 2015. But I later found a website that mentioned that in 1998 they changed the prefix. The first letter is the year (X is 1999, Y is 2000, 1 is 2001, 2 is 2002......B is 2011, C is 2012) . So C means 2012, B5 is Explorer (2011-present), and E is "Engine North America" engineering dept. So they just changed the year to be 1 digit and the model to be 2 digits. Thanks.

Hi all, According to DIN and IS standards, springs made from wire or rod with a diameter above 16 mm should be hot coiled due to specific reasons. We have consulted with several manufacturers who claim they can cold coil springs using wire or rod up to 30 mm in diameter. Could you please advise if springs made from wire with a diameter ranging from 16 mm to 30 mm using the cold coiling process would be as effective as those made using the hot coiling process? I look forward to your valuable suggestions. Best regards, Johny

Can you explain why you cut 1 inch worth of spring to get a 2 inch drop?
@EatonDetroitSpring8 ай бұрын
If you cut off 1-inch of the free length of the coil, that is it is out of the vehicle, then the vehicle will drop one inch, not 2.

Tempering is to soften the hardening steel. Why after that you do shot preening?
@EatonDetroitSpring8 ай бұрын
After the springs have been formed and quenched in oil, they are too hard and brittle. In order to soften them to be a spring they must be re-heated to around 900 degrees F for a few minutes. They are then shot peened to relive the inherent internal stress that formed during the heat treating process.

Some say don't re-torque u-bolts because they're designed to stretch and tightening them repeatedly stretches them too much and eventually weakens them. The recommendation would be to double nut if loosening is a problem.

What about longevity? Which will last the longest? A suspension rebuild is a pretty big undertaking, would rather do it once and be done with it for as long as possible.

Why would I have problems with this vehicle but none of the rest? and lastly is there anything I can do with the materials that I have to keep the rear end at this hight.

Is it normal to have some difference when it comes to the wheel-to-fender gap? I have a 2017 Honda HR-V that I use as my daily and that I recently had suspension parts replaced (including tie rod ends, rack ends, lower control arms and ball joints, shock absorbers) and I only just noticed (after 7 years lol, not really sure if this was a problem before) that the left side has a shorter wheel-to-fender gap compared to the right side. The difference at the front is around 1/4 inch or 6.35 mm and the rear is around 1/8 inch or 3.175 mm from my measurements. For the record, the car rides relatively fine after the replacements.
