Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in high school here in North Carolina when this song first came out in 1979. I remember it well. My girlfriend at the time and I loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (28-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.

Michael McDonald was the leader singer for the Doobie Brothers. Their hits were "What a Fool Believes", "Real Love", "It Keeps you Running", and "Minute by Minute". Michael McDonald is what we called "Blue Eyed Soul". He went solo, and "I Keep Forgetting" was one of his mega hits. His other hits are "Sweet Freedom", "You Belong to Me"(also created an alternate version where he does a duet with Chaka Khan), and "I Gotta Try". He smashing backup vocal for other Blue Eye Soul artist Kenny Loggins on "This Is It". Some of Kenny's hits were "Heart to Heart", and a duet with El Debarge on "I'll Be There. Michael and Kenny were some "bad white dudes"!

He is with his wife in this, Yoko Ono. The Beatles split in 1970. Most of the video here is from 1971-72. The song is from 1980, the year he got shot dead. The China line is just something your parents tell you to get you to finish the food on your plate. "They're starving back in China, so finish what you got." A great song from the same year was Watching the Wheels. It's about the 5 years John spent out of the business, to raise his child Sean. It has his best, soulful vocals.

John wrote this as a way to "get back" at all the snobs who thought all the lyrics had deep meaning. He was trolling them with a complete nonsense song.

The part about killing a man is a metaphor for killing the man he felt society wanted him to be he in a way came out as gay without actually saying that but that seems to be what he meant.

The man that was speaking to him actually was trying to molest him and when they said toward the end they threw something off the bridge that was the man that was trying to or molested him and she helped do it but never told he jumped in the river because he couldn't handle the situation that's what I think it was in the movie. There is a movie I don't know if it's exactly like the song though but I believe that's what happened in the movie. Robbie Benson was the actor that played Billy Joe

The song is about the life of excess at the time in California, on how you can very easily become trapped in the drug scene with no where to go or rely on anyone to help because everyone was part of that scene at the time.
