A great, very funky interpretation of Dizzy Gillespie's masterpiece. Actually not dissimilar to the way Dizzy's All Star band performed it in the 70's. Great stuff.

A little political history: Quincy made a point in the years afterward to never perform this piece in public as a protest against apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela's imprisonment. Jones was set to host Saturday Night Live the night before Mandela was released in February 1990. As a result, Jones devoted his opening SNL monologue to performing the piece in front of the audience.

Indeed. Of course, the original by Dizzy was aimed at racism in the southern states of the US and I guess this was Quincy picking up on that and making a statement about apartheid instead.

Quincy Jones arranged, conducted, and produced this song turning it inside out and making it a masterpiece. Quincy wrote the music arrangement adding some new harmonies and melodies. The original melody was written by Dizzy Gillespie.

Actually many of the changes and solos owe quite a lot to the way Dizzy's band played this in the 60's and 70's. I think saying he 'turned it inside out' is a big exaggeration.

Guys - no disrespect for Quincy whatsoever, but... Manteca isn‘t HIS masterpiece at all : It was written in 1947 by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo. Lovely interpretation, though...

MANTECA WAS CONDUCTED, ARRANGED AND PRODUCED BY QUINCY JONES. THE ARRANGER USES THE BASIC MELODY OF THE COMPOSER, THEN ADDS HIS OWM MELODIES AND HARMONY. QUINCY MADE THIS A MASTERPIECE.

Although Gil was talking about another one, I lived on 17th st in San Francisco in the 70's and this kind of music was common, with local artists and bands like Santana, Cal Tjader, Tipica Cienfuego, Malo, etc. This song came along in the middle of it.
