This is one of the best engineer interviews on KZbin, it didn't just focus on eulogising the 'good old days' which so many younger interviewers seem to gravitate towards. I sincerely hope that you do another with Elliot soon, and if so; please cover more of the techniques used for surround mixing, in particular Quadraphonic 4.0 and what it was like to pioneer mixing beyond the stereo realm. 👏

I pulled it from udemy for many reasons. If you bought it in the past you should still have access to it there. I plan to upload it to KZbin soon

I had trouble watching the digital visualization. Cause the tape goes from left to right. The wave forms go from right to left. Nevertheless. Still very useful. Thanks!
@biasedaudio26 күн бұрын
In the digital representation the tape is in the edit block not loaded on the machine so the tape can slide from either side. So it does accurately represent how it would look while editing.

Even by watching this video i have no idea how you would or could cut the exact thing you want to cut. That this even clearly worked out during those decades (The songs speak for themselves) is beyond me. I will never complain again while editing in my DAW. I thought all the hardware knobs and tables in a studio freaked me out, but this is creative madness

So ive built about 10 db25s and 10 db15s since i saw this video earlier this year and i had bought a pretty good pair of automatic wire strippers for around 90$cad. Around my 5th db25 the blade started to become dull which i was pretty disappointed about given the price but i figured id try stripping the mogami with my finger nails and it worked great. You dont need long nails at all, just enough to grip the wire! Its really efficient once you get the groove! Figured id share this! Cheers🤘

Replacement blades for a $90.00 Stripper should be available for just a few bucks.

Excellent description of the Dolby A process, with a realistic take on the likely evolution on it being used creatively. That said, don’t overlook the benefits of decode only! It can be a great standalone expander. Also, what is that great little CAT 22 box you’ve got?

Pro tip if youre using a connector such as mogami gold or any gold connector, there is something called gold embrittlment, meaning solder doesnt stick to gold and will literally fall right out of the connector, so make sure you remove the gold coating on the inside by tinning, solder wick then tinning again the solder wicking again, finally tin and solder wire

Is it possible to make or convert a female xlr cable or adapter to a combo jack? If possible could you show a video of doing such?
@biasedaudioАй бұрын
Unfortunately right now I don't have the time to make this specific video. Combo jacks don't come in a cable mount to my knowledge, so it would be a little funky. I do see them sold online. If you make one it would be the same as wiring the female XLR but you would add a small jumper between tip of the 1/4 inch combo and pin 2 of the xlr combo, and ring of the 1/4 to pin 3. Hope this helps.

Great interview, nice that you got into the more technical and details of the era of AR especially some of the other engineers, and just how things were… A lot of younger interviewers wouldn’t even know how to begin to ask this line of inquiry

Those audio samples at the 10 minute region were not level matched quite well enough. Try normalizing all the audio files to something like -1dbs after the processing

I found that the old type of jack (non Neutrik) centre connecting tab becomes separated from the stud holding the tab. If the cable is in a situation where it is not moving around a lot, this will be fine. The spacing you mentioned, this I understand. I would never use this model of Jack for Guitar or Microphone.
@biasedaudioАй бұрын
I think the issue you describe might be related to the brand of the connector. There are a lot of copies these days. I prefer the Switchcraft Brand 1/4 connector which are durable and I have never had that problem, if one wanted to use this style connector.

How many 😳 just recorded onto 🤔 another reel instead 🤔
@biasedaudioАй бұрын
I get this response often. As a professional I can state as a fact. Every single record you have heard that was recorded to analog tape and mastered using that analog tape used this process. It would be very difficult to make this music edit by recording on two machine that were not locked using time code. As well if recording to a second tape was used the music would be down a tape generation decreasing quality and adding noise. Not only that all analog machines have a gap between the record head and erase head which can cause imperfection at the record point. This is the way it was done for decades by professionals.
@weazeldark3983Ай бұрын
@biasedaudio I'd just got brass tubes slaped dem on deck and spare heads and apartment them ontop and cable tied the reels together and ran a vector scope on the channels and had spare 3rd wheel on one dem giant pecils in drill Probably look at using the wrong tape on machine and using domestic heads smaller run a frequency to time stamp the extra width or go moive production and bin dive the surplus movie reels and use that as tape protector and time stamping with light duty cycle Don't know something along those lines persay Been even more fun try vcr video recording concept for audio sampling and working If I got board and in zone built my own reel to reel Be stacks of dud dead considered zombie gear to Frankenstein to glorious enlightenment But yeah not a esay feat for reality but great fantasy be had

These tutorials are brilliant. Thanks so much. Could you also recommend a decent multi meter Brad? there are tones out there to choose from but no idea about how to find a good one without breaking the bank! Cheers
@biasedaudioАй бұрын
Thank You! As far as a multimeter the world has changed. Fluke is one of the few respected brands left but they break the bank. Brymen is another respected brand still can be expensive. In my experience with modern technology most multimeters in the $35 - $65 US range do a fine job. I would look in that price range on amazon for a model with lots of purchases and positive reviews. Klein tools might be good, I never bought a multimeter from Klein but other products I've bought have been good. and they sell one for &25-$35 range. One tip I tend to avoid meters with transistor checker built in, it's a bit of a gimmick and usually found on cheezy meters. If you are working on audio be aware a multimeter may read frequency but often the AC volt reading will only be accurate at low frequency's. Hope this helps.
