I've been following you on Soundcloud and Ytube for a long time now, and I love your production - it's really brilliant! I agree, people need creative artists like you to get away from formatted music. And to reach a higher state of consciousness, of spirituality, freedome and only independent artists can, I think, bring that about through their creativity.

Thanks so much my friend - I appreciate the considered comment, and agree that out creative artists need more reach into people's listening habits. I don't like seeing how utterly sanitised so much music's become.

I 100% agree but unfortunately i also don't have a solution. I always look for new music, be it old zamrock or new latin down tempo but i don't know many people who do go out thier way to find stuff. Some of my friends just let spotify decide for them and they don't even know the name of the band or song they're listening to. With streaming there is such an abundance of music. Also the algorythms keep us engaged, so we don't even pay attention to the creators of the art we are enjoying. Very dificult for independent artists to get recognition this way...

Even with the unversal access to the internet it didnt change the fact that that music needs to be "marketed". I think you can still feel the effect of the massive marketing behind LYFB. Which is the reason most people know you, it was in video games, Spider-Man trailer, those are not small things. Still to this day, not all but most people discover you through LYFB or Metropol or even the fake Prodigy album "Castbreeder". Point is: marketing is important and neccesary but very hard to get especially today. Not everyone is looking for a "big marketing" but its not a bad thing to have one.
@SimonShackletonMusic14 күн бұрын
I wouldn't say those licenses were done for marketing purposes though - they just came about as there was a lot of appetite for that kind of music back then and ended up being cool opportunities to get a *lot* of exposure through the movie fanbase. Funnily enough, there was virtually NO marketing done by the record label whatsoever for LYFB other than making that crazy video and getting a couple of remixes done... and putting us on tour with The Crystal Method. By that stage, though, they'd walked away and abandoned us while refusing to let us out of our contract for a number of years.
@shadowrage259314 күн бұрын
@@SimonShackletonMusic I hear ya. Basically Metropol was a right album at the right time. A VERY lucky break that happens once or twice in band's lifetime. Also I wanted to ask this for a long time. What role did the label play in Lunatic Calm? They abandoned supporting LC but why did you retire it? Couln't you continue LC on your own? By 2000 you had a studio, your own gear, there was ACID Pro, Reason. You didn't need a big studio to do music. Were they crucial for funding gigs, travels and CD manufacturing?

I do see your struggle, and all around with others, I follow you and keep up with your posts, and always listen to new music you put out, and I love the feeling of new music from you or artists through your lables I've always loved the fact that I've always been at the front of looking for new music to please myself and wanting to show friends, which is a big part of loving DJ'ing... but there is just a side of wanting to let friends hear new music you like because you know they'll like it and chances they've not heard as you're (me) always listening for new music to love.. Before there was social Media, the feeling of going round a mates house with a bag full of new records is something of pure love for the music.
@GavTech7414 күн бұрын
But as we just listen we should listen & buy. You dont get to see the 'behind the scenes' just the costs to a label or how indepent you are. Is it just enough to listen these days?
@SimonShackletonMusic14 күн бұрын
I think you're right about wanting to show music to friends - that's always been a big driver for me, whether it's making it myself or running record labels and bringing artists up by giving them a platform. I think that socials *can* give you elements of that feeling, especially when you see core fans amplifying the music they love by shouting it from the rooftops and getting people to hear it. I mean, really HEAR it. I feel like part of the problem is that music's kind of been downgraded over the past decade & a half - more often than not it's now the underscore to a computer game, or a tragic TikTok dance, a viral ad campaign, or the soundtrack to a film. It's almost as if it's less important as a standalone art form than its ever been to *many* people (not to all people).

I think the buying of digital is a super hard sell for people - one thing that streaming changed forever is people cherishing access over ownership ... and there aren't many people who would even consider a digital file as ownership any more. Making physical 'stuff' is tremendously risky unfortunately - I've been burned with that for the past 20 years with distributors going bankrupt and palette loads of my music being either pulped, or me having to buy them back off the administrators (only to have to bin them later down the line!). One of the amazing things about streaming, though, that I don't see mentioned much, is that streaming has an infinitely longer tail as an income stream than any physical release. I would love to be in a position where streaming revenue was my mailbox money and then I could continue to create without limitations!
@dayo614714 күн бұрын
streaming has ruined a part of the process for me. Not the music itself, but the actual purchasing of a physical copy of someones work. The amount of hours I could spend in record shops in a world of my own and the elation of finding something amazing, or even just buying a few cds from HMV. I get that streaming makes it easier for less known artists to get their work out, but it also provides a platform for utter rubbish too. unfortunately these days I follow a select few artists and just hope I stumble across something new and good sometimes. most music I like seems to be lost in a sea of sh*t. your music has always made me appreciate your production and always gives me the feelings good music should. I'll look forward to the next 20 years of it

I feel like, with Spotify for example, the more you put into it, the more effective the recommended algorithms are to the point where I routinely discover 5-10 awesome new bits of music each week through their discover weekly playlists. Find a song I like? Go to Song Radio and there are 50 similar options ... which again is awesome if you're nerdy enough to harness that and playlist it in a way that you can enjoy at a later date. Like you, I do miss those days of dredging through record shops - I used to spend at least half a day a week doing it in central London in & around Berwick Street, and it was really exciting ... but it was also 'of it's time'. I also loved the fact I could spend a day in the studio, knock out a bootleg, smack it on a few thousand white labels and walk away with £5k in the bank! Times have obviously changed massively ... I just don't want the meaning that music has to so many of us to be forever lost in the race to the bottom.

This is a great topic, Simon. I guess since I've listened to most of the same artist I did growing up, I sometimes considered myself a music snob at times. I do listen to newer stuff, and maybe I have been spoiled by most of my favorite artists all these years, but I'd rather give my money to them rather than someone like Lil' Wayne. Artists like that make enough money as it is, but I agree with you that the underground should get more support and that people should broaden their horizons. I love discovering new music, and that's what my #BringTheMusic moniker is all about. Other than that, I don't buy anything that's on the radio, so maybe I'm the problem, but as for support, that can be done many different ways. It just takes someone to do it and most people live in their bubbles.
@SimonShackletonMusic14 күн бұрын
Totally hear you mate - it's really not intended to be focused around 'stop listening to old music' or anything like that ... it's well documented that for many people their adventures in discovering new music ends at around 22 years old (funnily enough when they start getting, you know, responsibilities!). It's more a frustration around how to find new ears when no one's really listening, you know? The endless social noise has kind of disrupted people's attention to the point where the successes are meaningless smash & grabs, algorithmically-driven ram-raids for those precious few seconds of 'eyes on'.
