From what I've read and seen, their actors (Boyega and Isaac) considered it romantic! Isaac even seems to have pushed for that direction. Unfortunately, it seems Disney did not want to do it.

@@DapperDanLovesYou I honestly wouldn't mind it being either. I just wished more was put on their progression as characters rather than what we were given with Ep 8 and 9. And don't even get me started on Rey, Kylo, Snoke, Luke, etc...
