I had guinea pigs when I was like 16. I built them this massive run and stuff, I wouldn't say there for all kids tho you have to be very very gentle but once they are okay with you picking them up and letting them out they start jumping around. And lots of clean up

I agree, they are quite quiet but really complex pets. They really don't want often to be picked up much. But fleece liners have made it worse for guinea pig care as that means more overall cleans and more spot cleans. Haymites themselves shouldn't call for the vets though, generally harmless but off the counter treatments will deal with that. With surgery largely I've had two boars castrated together and they are fine with the stitches but the painkillers, antibiotics is almost a full time job so you can identify issues easily and quickly. It's also really important to recognised guinea pigs are more definite pets for landlords then non-mammalian exotics. So it can restrict housing later on and if the landlord decides they have changed their mind then finding a new house can be tricky. Social media has made it worse I've found with videos for views showing the worst of animal care.

Oo i wonder if you can put mealworms or superworms in the dirt as a bit of enrichment for your rats to dig around for them and get a tasty treat. I used to do kinda the same thing with my hedgehog except instead of dirt i would use blankets, she would go hog wild lol

lol that's how it goes with pets sometimes! a long time ago i had a pet mouse and i set up a lovely free roam area with a dig box and a bunch of stuff to play on but he *hated* table time more than anything, so i gave up on free roaming him and just tried to play w him in his enclosure. love these guys

also idk if they've had peas at all before, but sometimes rodents will have one member of their pack eat a small amount of a new food and see if it makes them sick, then if it's all good they'll go back and eat more -- this is what wild rats do since they can't throw up if they eat something poisonous. my mouse used to refuse new food from my hand but if i let him eat it slowly over the span of a few hours he would eat anything, lol

Did you leave the peas long enough for them to defrost? If they were still frozen maybe that's why they had no interest? Just throwing out ideas, I've yet to have been able to keep rats yet.
