American mink numbers are plummeting due to otters reclaiming our British waterways. During the 1980s, mink numbers in the U.K. were around 110,000, but recent figures have now put that as low as 40,000. Otters, it seems, are literally driving the American mink to extinction in the British Isles. Oh, and it seems they developed a taste for another invasive species. The American crayfish. Keep up the good work.

Why are all clips less or more blurry? Only the texts appear sharp. Opercularia and something else were a bit sharper, but even they could be desired. Trachelomonas was really bad in terms of sharpness. Do you have dirt in your optics? I don't know what is possible for you, but I think that maybe you can take some idea from the channel Journey to the Microcosmos, whose videos are always sharp - which depends on the equipment and its use. If an organism or animal is so broad in the Z direction, it's clear that not everything can be sharp. But nothing is sharp with you.

Can use this app for farmland biodiversity in India
@UKCEH

Hello, many thanks for your interest. The app is using datasets from the UK so wouldn't be directly applicable to India.

Fantastic. As a advisor to farms here in France I wonder if this can be used in mainland Europe or is there an equivalent application here?
@UKCEH
@UKCEH Жыл бұрын
Hi, the UKCEH E-Planner was created using UK Land Cover Map data and other UK data so it won't be usable in mainland Europe. See more here: e-planner.ceh.ac.uk/Acknowledgements But we'd love to hear if there are equivalent tools in other countries!

Hi, The site in the current experiment doesn't have ground-nesting birds. If the practice gets rolled out to other locations then a check would certainly be needed.

@UKCEH No! I never received one. I'm hoping you can send me one next year again. The 2022 one burst in the post so I literally received only the envelope. I'd very much like to be included in the 2024 though.

How is this supposed to help the climate crisis?
@UKCEH
@UKCEH Жыл бұрын
Hello Grayham, The basalt rock dust particles absorb and store carbon at much faster rates than would happen with normal weathering of naturally occurring rocks at these sites, in a timescale of just months instead of decades. It's been estimated that this enhanced rock weathering could account for 30% of annual greenhouse gas removal targets under UK's net zero plans

That is indeed most interesting - as a physicist I am quite unfamiliar with the techniques you describe. Presumably you could differentiate between some of the (e.g. bramble-type) species by choosing longer or more complex "bar codes"? But I appreciate that anything that made the analysis take longer would be unacceptable. Thank you very much for your careful explanations!

I saw a European hornet and it definitely looked larger than 30 mm. I thought it was a dragonfly. I'm not sure how big .. Looked about 1.5 inches.. but that doesn't mean it was... But they are very large wasps. I know there's wasps bigger in the world but I can't see the other wasps and hornets being much bigger. That would be ridiculous... People say Japanese hornet is twice the size of the European, that would mean the Japanese hornet is the size of a house sparrow. I find that very very difficult to believe. You can't have a wasp that size... That would be some sight . Japanese hornets can only be slightly bigger,. Like the European hornet is slightly bigger than the Asian hornet in this video.

Fascinating! I had no idea how much this sampling would cost, or how long it would take per sample, but the answer in both cases is much more than I would have guessed! I hope you are soon faced with the problem of finding more space to store the archive samples - I'm sure it will be useful far into the future 🙂

Ive caught Skelly from Red Tarn a few times,i know a person who caught Vendace from Bassenthwaite which im led to believe the population was thought extinct for around ten years then as one was caught they took brood stock reared some fish and then stocked a rezzy in scotland loch skene as it was perfect habitat and was a guarentee to save the Cumbrian strain.Sham something couldnt be done about the two scots locations that skelly were once present in,i was at is it castle loch the very shallow lake,with a side of the lake named skelly something....i got talking to some divers who went there every few years and they said they still in there but very rarely seen so you never know...but as lock skene now has stock couldnt some stock be taken from there to the scots lakes that once housed vendace?
