I just passed my Private Pilot check-ride and the DPE diverted me to this airport. I guess he wanted to see how well I can land. Yes, You have to get close to that giant hill. I over shot final a bit like you did but got it on center and landed on center-line.

Congrats! That’s just not an easy place - so to do that on a regular day, nevermind during a checkride! Enjoy your new option to go there as little or as much as you like. :)

Nice job 👍 Here’s a useful tip. On a 430 load the full approach and if on vectors activate the anticipated intercept leg instead of vtf. That way if atc gives a last minute fix outside of vtf, the other fix’s remains available for a “direct to”. I know things worked out as planned vtf this time. But this tip will save having to reload the approach if atc decides to throw a curveball for spacing or something else. Again great job!

Absolutely and I just heard this suggestion on a podcast (Opposing Bases). Most of my experience is on the 355 and don't have the same muscle memory on the 430. It was the perfect circumstance to put into practice and try it again. Thank you!

I think I liked about this video, I think this is the first one where I’ve actually seen someone do approaches while flying in the pattern. I didn’t know you could do such a thing. I’m not flying on instruments yet, but I’m working on my instrument rating. But I like the idea of being able to do pattern work, and practicing approaches at the same time. This is especially true, because I don’t have my own airplane, and renting I’m sometimes very limited to a timeslot. thanks for sharing!
@KISMpilot
@KISMpilot 10 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it. If not instrument rated, you have the option of requesting a VFR Flight Following request for instrument practices while on the ground (they'll coordinate with Departure) - or once you're up, asking Departure/Approach if they have time and space (and they'll coordinate with the tower for the landing). Either way, I'd let them know you're an instrument student so they know ahead. Hope that helps!

@KISMpilot

I heard from others to make a quick departure leg call “last call over to Riverside” on CTAF and go over to Riverside tower as soon as practical. On that day I departed a tight left pattern to the north by climbing and calling SoCal for flight following back to Burbank.

Coming to VNY from the UK to hour-build in Jan-Feb 2024, planning a trip to Big Bear after seeing your video, thank you! Possibly stupid question, do you need a mountain rating for airfields like these?
@KISMpilot
@KISMpilot Жыл бұрын
Great question actually! The short answer is no. However, rentals (maybe due to insurance)usually require a check-out with an instructor before one can go there. The same might apply to going to Catalina as well. It helped going up with someone familiar as it removed some of the mystery of performance, pattern entry and leaving the area. Good luck!

Hi I’m doing my PPL training. Can I ask what 16R shortened cleared for take off? Does that mean 16R is in construction so it’s shortened?
@KISMpilot
@KISMpilot Жыл бұрын
I believe if the published runway takeoff distance is shortened by any amount for any reason (including construction), Tower is required to mention it - as different aircraft will have performance to take into account. For the piper, I knew I had plenty of runway.
