What does song "Katyu Chuko" from movie "Laila Majnu (2018)" mean? I used to think no movie would move me as much as Rockstar, but then came Laila Majnu. And I thank the stars and Sajid Ali for making this movie. Set in a Kashmiri background, Laila Majnu’s music is also heavily influenced by Kashmiri folk and instruments. Like the use of Hukus Bukus in ‘Hafiz Hafiz’, and the melancholic ending of the movie, “Katyu Chuko” which is small but completely in Kashmiri. The use of Sarod and Niladri Kumar’s Zitar. I could go on and on about the music of this movie but your question is about Katyu Chuko so we will discuss that only. The Urdu/Kashmiri band Alif brings a modern melancholic touch to an 18th/19th-century poem by the renowned poet Mahmud Gami. Their rendition remains true to their previous performances of the track, which they have showcased at various music festivals. Lead singer Mohammad Muneem's expressive vibrato resonates beautifully across a sparse, ambient soundscape, transporting listeners to the serene valleys of Kashmir. The lyrics and their meaning are: Katyu chuk cze nundbaaney, Where are you my dear beloved Walo maashooq myaney Please come as soon as possible Khabar chhai kus mea ruudum You know that, I have left with no one When we hear this song, Qais has turned into Majnu completely. His idea of this world revolves only around Laila. We see glimpses of Majnu in Qais throughout the second half of the movie but now, we see Majnu himself. Laila has lost her beloved. She is calling him, requesting him to come back to her. She has no one left without him. Katyu Chuko is Laila’s calling for Qais. When Laila finally finds him and sees him in this state, when Majnu starts telling everyone that Laila is in everything that exists, when he starts chanting Laila and turns it into “la ilaha illallah” which translates to “there is no God but Allah”, Laila realizes she has lost Qais in this race of life. Majnu has started to compare Laila to God now. He says, “In tasveeron me, in deewaron me, meri saason me, mujhme, tujhme, har jagah bas ek hi naam- Laila!” and Laila starts to get up and leave, that is the moment she realizes Qais has gone too far and to reach where he is, she needs to move forward as well. Something in her heart figured she would not be able to survive anymore as she tells Zaid, Qais’ brother, to bring him to her grave if she leaves before him. That’s when Katyu Chuko comes in for your tears to start streaming down your face. Science says when a person dies, the brain stays alive for 7 minutes, showing the best part of that person’s life as a montage before they finally leave this world. With this song, we witness Laila’s final moments, her final seven minutes. We see the montage of her happiest moments and they are just Qais. Qais when they first met near his jeep, when they met again at the wedding, that head tilt in the car, him constantly looking at her while negotiating his nek, and she takes her final breath with his note in her hand.  The famous note which said, “Jaa ab nahi aata, ab tu hi dhundh mujhe.” we see this quote being used thrice in this movie- once when Qais actually leaves Laila this note, second when the heartbroken Qais leaves Laila’s house on her wedding day, and finally when Qais is actually gone and has only left Majnu behind. Maybe Laila knew that this time, she would have to search for Qais in the afterlife.  After she is dead, we see Majnu waking up in his locked room, distressed on not finding Laila around him anymore, wanting to go to her. We see the body of Laila, or her Janaza, following the same path as we saw in ‘Gayee Kaam Se’. We see the same group of men standing near the same tea stall, this time with sadness in place of smirks on their faces. In the crematorium, or the Qabristaan near the well where Qais found Laila for the first time on the full moon night, we see Rasool, Qais’ father’s friend/brother, Qais’ friends, and Zaid taking part in her burial. Now that Laila is buried, her soul is free. Zaid reaches home and lets Majnu out of his room, which is now ruined from his fury. And the little part of Qais still present in Majnu takes him to the same crematorium where Laila was buried that morning. Majnu sees Laila’s soul again, calling him to the other side and runs towards her. He hits his head on Laila’s tombstone and bleeds to death on her grave, finally meeting her in the afterlife.  Now Katyu Chuko ends and we see the kids Laila saw in her dreams, Qais in his bear mask, and the movie ends with them meeting in the afterlife which we see in O Meri Laila. I cannot shut up about this movie, the acting of Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri, and the music of this movie. The way this movie takes music as a way of telling the story the actors and actions cannot tell is amazing. I will never stop recommending this movie to everyone around me, even if it means traumatizing my entire circle of friends, which is already very small and very mentally unstable hehe.
