I thought its not allowed to stir the milk and espresso or else it becomes a latte. The espresso is supposed to stay on the top of the milk without mixing. However, I do know there are different variations of the Macchiato so I could be wrong.

Fun fact: this is actually a latte. Anytime the milk is mixed with the espresso it becomes a latte. Macchiatos let espresso shots sit on top of the cold of steamed milk. But a beautiful drink nevertheless 🎉 With love, your friendly Starbucks store manager from Galveston, TX ❤

⁠⁠@@akotu939macchiato means stained, or marked. While you're right that in orthodox style; caffé macchiato is exactly that. Latte macchiato is also believed to be of Italian origins and is still also a macchiato, simply it is milk being stained by coffee instead of the other way
