Such a great Villain with a lot going on. Also, if you've read the (fairly short) comic Emperor Doom (it's from the end of the 80s, this is not God Emperor Doom even if they mistakenly used his art for the mini) the implementation of the story is done really well! Spoileralert: in the comic the Heroes also win by defeating Purple Man (who is trapped by Doom in order to amplify and misuse his hypnotizing powers to control every citizen in the world). Now at 1:04:00 it says add a doom bot AND (not or) add a Crisis token to each doom bot without one in Dooms and both adjacent Locations. So you should have added 3 Doom Bots and like 6 Crisis tokens in those 3 Locations. And adding the doom bot as part of the overflow MUST be done. Otherwise it would have read: "if possible, add a doom bot....". The first run was a loss because you had 3 Locations with no empty slots, each couldn't add a civ and therefore triggered overflow: which should have put 3 Doom Bots in the remaining 3 Locations. However, now you can't add the remaining 2 civilians that needed to be added to those Locations and also in these Locations you trigger overflow: again a Doom bot should be added but there is no empty slot remaining on any Location and the Villainous Plot is succesfull.

“With an empty slot” is there so you don’t double-trigger the Overflow condition. If it’s just the next clockwise location, and the next clockwise location is full, you would trigger Overflow again. If all the empty slots on the board are full, you cannot add a Doombot to a location, and the loss condition triggers. You got a really unlucky cascade effect from the villain card, plus neglecting the upper locations.

I agree with your assessment. What threw me for a loop was the fact it was worded differently than Ultron. Trying to avoid overflow triggering again was unnecessary since it would work exactly the same without that stipulation. We will have to get our revenge next time 😁

Why would it stop double triggering overflow? If we have a full location and the next location has an empty space. I have a token that I need to add to the full location. I can’t do that to the full location so it triggers overflow. So don’t we now have two tokens to place in the next location. Whereas if it says the next empty location I skip over the full location and only have one token to place? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Are special effects considered to be simultaneous? If we have 3 locations that are full and have civilians. In this instance do I have 3 occurrences of 1 civilian overflowing? Or just 1 occurrence of overflow with 3 civilians?

Good question. In this example when you would try to place a token in a full location and cannot, it triggers an overflow. However the token that triggered the overflow does not continue as it was "spent" to cause the overflow to happen. So you would still only have a single overflow to trigger

I wonder if it would break the game to allow the player to choose to either roll their current die level or (if they are higher than level 1) roll one level lower (a d6 at level 2) but get an automatic +1? I feel like the stealth executions from assassin's are kind of still there but much harder to pull off because of the random tiles connections. Thanks for the demo!

That's a cool idea. That might work. Though I'm not sure it's much better than just boosting it with one or more of your cards anyway. And yes, this one does feel very different than their other games like Assassin's Creed but still has a Triton Noir feel. I am very much looking forward to what the relaunch will look like as I found this version to be great!

I was expecting the "rooms" to be added sooner or more frequently. The first one was added in the first 10 minutes of the game and the second after 40 minutes. The third one after 50. And I know that you have been answering questions and explaining stuff, but it's interesting to see that the estimated game time is 1 hour, but the play time here was 3.

Yeah streaming always adds time. Also keep in mind this is the first time for us playing a full game. Subsequent plays will be faster. Speaking of which, we are planning to record another video. I'm just as curious as you to see how long that play takes. I did suggest some ideas to consider to speed up the game to the designer in the feedback I shared. As for adding the rooms, that's mostly a player choice. If we really wanted, we could have added a room super quickly. All it takes is one more scrap which you can definitely guarantee the first round of the game and add a new room. To be honest, this might be a really good strategy to pursue. Take a bit more of a hit on damage to get a room to leverage in overcoming the enemies later and for longer.

Interesting game and theme. Was waiting for a playthrough before deciding to pledge or not. After seeing this, it’s not for me. Characters seem very static with a rinse and repeat game play but enjoyed watching you two! Helped me with my decision.

Rules corrections: 18:37 Black arrows next to a test means you must do the test only if you move in the direction of the arrows. But you can move in any direction. White arrows on a line means you can only move in that direction.

I read the special rules for Rick Jones as: the active player can either move Rick Jones with them when they move, or spend a heroic action to move Rick Jones to an adjacent location from a location that both the active player and Rick Jones are in, ie the condition for moving Rick Jones is that the active player must be in the same space as Rick Jones, rather than being able to move Rick Jones around the map regardless of where the active player is. Looking at the wording now, it is confusing. Don't think it mattered in the end regardless of the ruling though, great game!

Did you ever play Tanares Adventures? I started playing it, but squirreled to 4 other games, thinking I'd go back to it. And I will go back to it. I didn't get very far into the game play. All that to say, this looks like a less expensive, trimmed down (streamlined), easier to table, version which I'm happy to see! Comes out Tuesday on GF. Hoping they don't go crazy with the huge miniatures and extras unless it's to add a whole different game themed with cyborgs, robots, and other SkyNet/Terminator stuff. LOL. (That's not going to happen, but a sci-fi theme would be fun. Pirates are very similar to Fantasy in Tanares.)

I have not played Tanares Adventures but I did have a good chat with Ryan from Meeple Marathon who has. It sounds like Expedition is equivalent to Jaws of the Lion for Gloomhaven, so yes I agree with your assessment. The campaign page does have info on the pledges and you can of course just get the base game but the game is designed to work with all the villains in the other sets for Tanares. Quite a bit of opportunity if someone owns the rest of the material or is interested in getting it. Personally I feel like the the core plus the optional sea dragon seems like enough.

I’m sorry that I missed this live. Entertaining video. My wife and I finally tried out the Supervillain mode this last weekend and really enjoyed it. My ex-wife saw the Pink show here in Indianapolis last month and said it was really great. I’m glad Kim enjoyed it as well.

Admittedly I've not tried Supervillain mode. I have tried Team Mode once. I actually like a house rule where we use the Super Hero cards in co-op play. Yeah Pink seems like a really good entertainer. This looks like a very chill and relaxing game. I'm backing it. I just don't know if it's a one and done game or if there are some decisions being made in later parts of the story. It's pretty cheap for the base game, too! Who needs resin dice, wood tokens, a miniature you don't use, and metal pins? I am adding the neoprene mat though. Replayability is a small concern for me. I re-read books. My brain is weird in that I won't recall all of the story moments, but do remember a few of the bigger ones. But once I start reading the book again, the story floods back into my mind's eye. So it'll be interesting to see how this one works for me.

Yeah I can't speak too much to replayability. The story will be known but the mechanics will play out a bit differently each time so I think there is some replay for mechanics if someone finds that part of the game interesting. I do think the plan is for more stories to leverage this same system for the future.

I'm with Kim on this one: most of your choices aren't very varied. I see the similarity with pandemic, but marvel united gives me more significantly varying choices each turn. There are only 3 types of AI cards, too. I have watched 3 plays of this game and I'm not feeling the variation. It is very cute, though.

I think it will make things to tough myself but I'm sure people will love this challenge since they talk about it in the facebook group already lol. "Balancing Teams, Equipment and Pets To keep battles balanced, each of these elements should make heroes remove their double wilds card from their deck. A second element added should then remove their single wild card. A hero should not have more elements beyond that. -If you prefer a much easier game, don’t remove wilds! :) -A hero without wilds in their deck should not equip any of these elements"

Thanks! I guess I missed that. I've been playing with the CMON rules instead. As for the balance, I don't think removing more than the double wild is necessary for any of these additions. The double wild is too powerful a card. But the idea of removing more cards for these additions seems entirely unnecessary as it will ultimately not be impactful. The only effect it will have is to attempt to drive the game towards a loss condition by having a hero not being able to play a card. In my experience, this really only happens in a two player game. Adding pets and teams rebalances the 2 player experience to be closer to the ideal 3 player experience. But in either case, since the villain deck is always 12 cards, it will always act as a game clock. No further adjustments necessary.

I'm very sure guards don't draw simultaneously. In step 3 of the round turn you decide which guard is going first (activate) - you then draw and play their full turn (steps 4 to 6) then at step 7 guard 2 activates, draws their chips and takes their full turn (repeats steps 4-6). See Rule book page 47-48 and the ref guide (Guards Turn). Sorry to be the rules police but it's not a just a mistake it's a fundamental rules error with a very large impact. I'd go as far as saying it breaks the game. I'll admit you had me checking the manual :P I just restarted with the upgrade pack and it's got some good changes and is a really fun game. Very video game like in many of it's mechanics which i personally like, even the new puzzle quests are lifted directly. I never found it too grindy originally as it gave you tools to mitigate the grind making those tools rewarding to get... also due to difficulty spikes early it taught you to grind just in case... :P

Oh yes you are completely correct. I'm not sure why we messed it up in this video and didn't think twice about it (I'm guessing we were playing some other simultaneous play game around this time?). I appreciate the help in pointing out this error! And yes, I agree we too didn't find it grindy. It is a common point I hear that I wanted to address in this video. The new additions really help even more with reducing the grind which was great. Isofarian Guard is fantastic
