What a great video! I'm starting my own self-publishing journey for my short story collection and your video gave me so many ideas on how to market it before it releases. Marketing can be the most overwhelming thing for any writer, so thank you for this overview. I can't wait to check out your other videos!☺

I ordered 30 author copies from KDP (in the UK) and they came in a quite flimsy cardboard box with no protection at all inside. The box had had a small knock on one corner. It wasn't much, but the total lack of protection was that quite a few books were damaged - the ones at the corner significantly, getting better away from the corner. But if I were buying a book in a bookshop it would be enough for me to not buy that copy. I did a test print (a single book) from Bookvault, again in the UK (another comment notes that their US printing isn't so good). The overall quality was better than KDP and (I've been led to believe) they protect the books better. The single book was fine. Also, the cover did not curl in the way KDP paperbacks tend to. They were more expensive than KDP, BUT I'd rather pay a bit more for better protection and non-curling covers. Also you can get books sent from them directly to buyers. That's a big hassle and cost saver over having to order and then distribute yourself, even though the headline price is higher.

What do you think about Publish Drive? I want to publish a hard or soft-cover book, not an ebook. Can you do Amazon KDP for Amazon and the rest through an aggregator? I appreciate your advice in advance!

No, verified means purchased. But yes it’s allowed by Amazon, and you can do it at anytime.

Excellent video! Truly great info and put together well. But, Author name and Title being at the top of the pages has nothing to do with being able to take a photo of the page - it's been standard printing practice for a very long time, before cameras or social media came into being. It's called a 'Running Head' and has been used since the 16th century, but became standard practice in the 19th century. They were/are used for several reasons, but primarily so a reader can easily identify what book they are reading and the title.

I see that the individual hardcovers have dust jackets so they weren't KDP published. I'm interested in knowing which group you published them through and how that works having already published the paperback sthrough KDP.

We have written a book, done the design through Canva (hardcopy) and tried to publish through KDP. Our book keeps being sent back from KDP for editing of the cover. . . not in the line in the line. So frustrating. . its been done from 6 months. so frustrating.

There are lovely new challenges since the nano scandal. Rough draft challenge from Sarah Cannon (10k 25k or 50k you choose as goal) or Kate's 100k Challenge where you write up to 100k in 3months .

I get what you mean. A plot is too organised. Idea/question collection notebook is super important for me as panser. Plots stress me when they are detailed. Yet when I am get stuck I can have a look at that notebook and I have a way to get unstuck.

I’ve never used their physical printing, only digital (digital isn’t going to be sized like a PDF, it’ll be an epub file that can change sizes based on the reading device. :)

As a French, your view on maternity leave is blowing my mind. What do you mean 6 WEEKS??? WHAT? take however long you need! Months! If you can afford to, and as long as it keeps you fulfiled as a person, go for it! The US view is insane, when so many countries give 1 year!
@BethanyAtazadeh11 күн бұрын
Haha well unfortunately it’s not just my view, it’s across most of America that it’s 6-12 weeks, depending on the job and the income (since a lot of times it’s not paid). I’m sure there’s outlying examples but the U.S. is definitely not the best maternity leave example to follow, I agree!

I like it when the main problem is not mentioned in the summary. The description starts off with the protagonist being oblivious and their biggest problem at the time is normal social or academic problems. That's it. The reader then thinks, "No way, there has to be more to it than that!" What is the book hiding? They have to find out! The possibility of it being anything will peak their curiosity. Though the cover of the book can hint at what kind of genre it is. I have a very intuitive mind and can guess the ending of a film or book just by seeing a teaser trailer or book description. Though film makers have mixed up there trailers to depict a different conclusion than the real ending, it still doesn't help because they put all of their funniest jokes or scenes which takes the fun of discovering them away from the viewer. It is the same for book descriptions. If the author includes the main villain or main catastrophe in the back of the book, it takes away the thrill of discovery for the reader. It's like delivering the punchline to a joke before the lead up... It will fall flat. The other factor is the price of the book. If the cover and back is good, but the price is too high, the reader might pass on it even though they were hooked. Sometimes they return when they have more to spend, though. I have several books in my Amazon list that I plan to buy later. Usually I buy the first book in the series to see if the story is actually good, then I save the rest in the series until later.
@ivanshiek12 күн бұрын
Yes, definitely. When I look for an interesting book to read, I always judge it based on the description on the back. I look for some specific things like; is it fantasy or sci-fi? Is it another trope? What interesting and unique features does it have? I typically like stories about sci-fi, fantasy, traveling or being transported to another world, and time travel. I dislike stories that are too slice-of-life, but some of it in the beginning does provide a good contrast. Like a calm before the storm. A lot of the decision making depends if it is an original work or based on someone else's work. There needs to be a hook in the description. But some times I'm not feeling that kind of story at the time. So it is some times hit or miss, and depends on the reader's mood. At the very least, they read the back and now it is going to come back to their memory once their mood changes and they crave something like your book. Other times, they pick it up out of boredom and then realize it is actually a gem. :)

This might sound like a crazy comment, I'm not sure... but is it possible to print books at like a local print shop and just sell and ship them yourself? Maybe you'd still be able to sell them on amazon? But take on more of the work to get more of the return?
