Starr, are you using a tablet camera? Do students know you're recording? Also, what prompted you to open a window into your classroom? I've been thinking of how to do that in a way that preserves the privacy of my students.
@StarrSackstein9 жыл бұрын
EduNut I did a periscope with my phone, so yes, they knew I was recording live. They have to sign waivers in my school and this class is all seniors. I try not to get people's names or faces where I can I. I like the idea of getting feedback and sharing some of the great stuff my kids are doing.

I think that's a great idea because if students have to be in school anyway they might as well learn something especially if it's interesting. Grades mostly work for memorization; if people are truly passionate about something they would want to learn.

I'm pretty hard on myself. I work hard to live with a level of honesty to continue to grow. The self awareness has been a labor of life long Introspection and Therapy. I've applied things from my personal life to everything. Thank you for your kind words and validation. I appreciate it. It's not always easy but it is always worthwhile
@TheEdunut9 жыл бұрын
This made me wonder if the deep level of self-awareness you demonstrate here is a rare thing in educators. I hope it's not, because It's so incredibly important to our craft. How many teachers are ever-mindful of their own deeply-ingrained beliefs and values to the point where they can push back in those times they can see how it impacts their assessment or their practice? I've been a mentor to veteran teachers and this level of introspection was rare. I hope you appreciate this about yourself.

What is learning? Such an important question for teachers to ask themselves from time to time. Easier to answer: What does learning look like? For me, it's not enough to see that a student gets from one column to the next in a rubric. I wish there was some way to be able to gauge how likely new info/knowledge/skills will be applied to contexts outside my classroom. I guess I'm bringing this up because to me, it's not about learning, but rather the quality of learning that we should somehow be able to assess. How can we be sure that once students achieve mastery, that it endures? We can compare pre- and post- tests and say, at the very least, a student scored higher so they must've learned something. But the true test for the quality of learning would be if that new idea/concept/skill/process endured and was independently applied to other contexts. Ideally, I would see this if my students kept comprehensive portfolios and I followed them for all four years of their high school days. Hmmm...I guess a teacher's got to have a dream. ;o)
@StarrSackstein9 жыл бұрын
those are some good questions... I'm working a piece right now that tries to address how well we know what students know... Love the idea of comprehensive portfolios that start in elementary school and travel with students til their formal early education ends... would be interesting for sure

It's interesting that you mentioned and many STEM educators believe their courses are heavy with content. To me, a few things seem so obvious: (1) the most important objective of STEM and non-STEM educators should be the facilitation of the development of lifelong skills - the four most important ones being effective learning, effective problem solving, teaming, and communicating; (2) the only content really critical for any topic really is the core knowledge (CN = knowledge that enables gathering, organizing! understanding, and using of material and enables meaningful interaction with experts) AND I'm not convinced there is all that much more CN for STEM classes that for history, Greek literature, Eastern religions, ... ; and (3) even the CN should NOT be the objective, i.e. the focus, of assessment but rather that CN should be the basis of student-centered activities that reinforce skills development leading to their becoming aligned and habitual personally for each person. It seems so obvious to me that the no grades approach is an even better fit with STEM courses - as is my personal choice of no textbooks and a PBL pedagogy. Don't get me wrong, no grades (and the other features) are good, I believe, for any course - but I am / was an engineering faculty member!!! MY CONCERN: There are too few educators at all levels willing to honestly consider such approaches to working with students!

Starr, you read my mind. I have this topic on my Tech Tuesday lineup this week, and really love how you infused the technical aspects of using comments on GoogleDocs to provide specific feedback. One of my favorite features is the ability to provide a hyperlink in the comments, so I can point a student to another source (video on how to write a thesis, writing page from OWL, etc).
