Great reaction! No need to feel upset for them, they sold half a billion albums (second only to Beatles but with only 8 sudio albums so fewer than Beatles, and maybe en par with Queen who also had more studio albums), made 3 musicals, and revolutionized now again with the new avatar /light-show technology in London. They have the goofy sense of humour (especially Bjorn) and have a very down to earth relaxed approach. This video was fun to watch. Nice to see Cher also who did some great covers and nailed it in the musical Mamma Mia.

I always viewed the extended music videos as an album promotion and a thank you to the fans who may never get to see him live on stage, it was the next best thing; he preformed for all of us. The music videos taught us how to dance and how to be creative with our moves and how to move with the rhythm (tik tok craze without the cameras).

@@InfectiousGroovePodcast I remember seeing the Jackson Five preform on stage back in the ABC/I Want You Back days on the Ed Sullivan Show, Johnny Carson and Carol Burnett (1976, I was six yo). Watched Janet on Good Times too. When I was nine my parents let me buy one 33.3 album and one .45 with my allowance; I chose MJ’s Off The Wall and M’s Pop Musik. I played the entire album again and again until I wrote down what I heard in the lyrics, so I could sing it knowing all the words by the third time through. When the videos came out, we all tried to dance just like him every time. Over that 40+ years, he went through many changes but so did we all (GenX) yet we couldn’t wait to see how he was going to entertain us with his next song/video combo. Speaking for myself only, I cringed a bit when Michael kissed Iman and Lisa Marie (always looked awkward) and when he hung Blankets over the balcony (whole other weirdness going on there with him having 3 white kids) but I paid attention back when the documentary lead to a trial. What I saw was a family who wanted fame and fortune, and a culture ready to believe the worst about anyone who already had fame and fortune. Mike was always a bit creatively eccentric and we’ve always accepted that it came with the territory. Similar story with Janet when she broke out, I matured with her and her music. We all grew up differently but none of that mattered when we were dancing and having a good time together.

As a fan of both Abba and Rik Mayall, I don't know how this is the first time I've seen this. I was doing a university dissertation on them when this came out, so it's something I should have noticed! Abba were criminally under-rated for decades, often still are. Their songs are incredibly intricate. It takes a lot of skill to make something so complex sound so simple. Makes the Beatles writing look like kindergarten.

I worked at a club in the 80s and early 90s. I was in a record pool so I have pretty much every released 12 inch domestic dance record made from about 86 to 92. I also have hundreds of imports and remix service records (some older). I have come to the point that I think I should sell them since I don't play them anymore, but we are talking anywhere from 1500 to 3000 records, and I know quite a few are really valuable. I have no idea how to go about selling them, and like you...many have been played multiple times, but they have been cared for meticulously. Any advice from anywhere would be appreciated

No one can even remotely understand the weight on MJ’s shoulders. He was not only the most famous and influential person to walk the face of the earth in the last 100 years but he relentlessly used his position to try and bring about peace and love back into the world. I laugh when people think stats of today are famous, but when you lived through MJ and saw with your own eyes that he could not even go anywhere ever without being stalked relentlessly by thousands of fans that would even shut down cities because he was rumored to be staying there, you haven’t seen fame. He was the icon of icons in a modern way and his music continues to live that legacy of timelessness

As a die hard Spandau fan for over 40 years, really interesting to hear your thoughts and comments about their music. In my opinion, True is a highly underrated album from the 80s decade. The album tracks ‘Pleasure’ and ‘Code of Love’ could easily have held their own as single releases. ‘I’ll Fly for You’ is another single that does not get the airplay these days it should in comparison to their biggest hits True and Gold.

Great reaction and Happy MJ-Day to the both of you. 🌻❤💔❤‍🩹 I enjoyed listening to your reflections and agree on your interpretations. I think it's important to not leave out the obvious perspective of MJ having had to live as "a color" and the obvious rage of anti-black racism, all racism, the effed up stuff about being treated as a n***** while being told one isn't proud of one's herritage, roots, is not black enough, etc. This being filmed not even 6 months after the Rodney King beatings and MJ being anything but dismissive of the black tradition - not least musically - they were brought up within (but not limited to). This quote from MJ from a Chicago Tribune interview in 1992 on the anger expressed in the panther dance, I think is important too: “Anger and rage are the prelude to a shift in consciousness. Unless we feel rage at some of the inequities and injustices of our society, there is no hope for transformation.” It speaks to the song being both individual and a political/societal statement (which MJ felt the need to point out, after everyone going hobby-psychologist on the panther-section). BoW expresses many dualities, as you already spoke on; both expressing the joy of coming together and learning from/celebrating and respecfully mixing ones' cultures, the love of unity and oneness and the rage and frustration seeing the society limit us through racism - with very real and deadly results for poc - and putting your foot down, saying "NO, I'm not playing nice anymore" and allowing one to explode, is yet another example of such dualities. Both on societal level and individual. Also in a more humourus and childlike way expressed in the beginning with a suburban middle-class family being, let's say, unappreciative of their child (I still feel anger in the pit of my stommach when that MJ poster breaks - and the child, let's say, puts their foot down. I also LOVE how they got the lions to look up and with their eyes follow the dad falling down.

@@MrsLaurenRobinson Very much so. Opposites that aren't opposites but are treated as opposites and therefor needs to be responded to as opposites whilst communicating them as non-opposites or non-necessary opposites in a continuous process. Just like two-way communication vs/equal to/synthesizing shared understanding, constructing further two-way communication and so on, through a dynamic of meta-layers, as you were speaking on. 100% deliberate.

The premiere of this video was seen by 500 million people worldwide ! Even today with youtube they can't replicate those numbers (Adele's much hyped ''Hello'' didn't get even close to those numbers after 24 hours of being posted). Btw, there's a re edited version (made by MJ) of the second part of this short film, where they digitally added on the windows that he's breaking, words like ''Go home ni**a'' and ''KKK rules'', which can make more sense to some viewers. The panther clearly is a reference to the Black Panthers organisation of the 60's/70's.

No one says who is the new F. Mercury, or the next Elvis, etc, so for me the " new MJ" sounds exactly as it is: he can be replaced. Wow, i like Lauren's explanations a lot! This short is discussed in lots of academic works, from Armond White, Susan Fast, Elizabeth Amisu ( you can find them online), im writing this and you two are still discussing so i wanted to ask if she is in educational field, which you confirmed. MJ showed here that he knows who he is, he is not just a ,,pop star,, and his Panther coda is way more than some ,,vulgar,, moves ( funny thing is that he is psychoanalized based on these moves, which is so sad but in the same time hilarious), he shows his anger, rebellion against the status quo of things, the Royal Army Hotel is the symbol of the colonizers, its a lot and if you are ever intetested read the academics interpretations. I really enjoy your reactions, they are so genuine and detailed! Another big difference between MJ and any other is that an artist like MJ is catching your attention no matter what musical genre you prefer. I am not into pop music, i wasn't, but even back in the day Michael managed to make me stay in front of the tv or not to switch the radio station. And among my friends ( rock, punk, rock) their reaction was the same. This is his profoundness as an artist, to be universally accepted. And this is what separates him from all the others. I became a fan some couple of years ago, and i am glad for this. What i remember is the fact that i found his smile and face expression so calming, which is available now too. I gotta stop. Thank you so much! Enjoy your week-end!

Thank you! Looks like you just gave me some reading material! I have always wanted to put together some kind of class about reacting to and interpreting things in pop culture. Maybe this is my sign...

@@MrsLaurenRobinson:) there are lots of papers available on academia...edu on pop culture and not only, I hope you get the complete link, every time I want to leave a link my comment is blasted into oblivion. About MJ"s artistry we have also Joseph Vogel, Willa Stillwater ( a blog dancingwiththeelephant), Isabelle Petitjean, mjj academic studies, parthofhistory(de)- I love this website, really interesting in depth discussions. And if you ever discuss MJ with your classes, they should know that this man was really invested into cultivate himself, and he really was a book worm no exaggeration.

@@MrsLaurenRobinson yep, although I've tried to write carefully, my comment was blasted into oblivion. Reg MJ's artistry I forgot to mention Joseph Vogel and Willa Stillwater. If you will ever talk abt MJ don't forget to mention the fact that he was heavily invested in cultivating himself and a book worm; from self help to books about the History of cinema, entertainment to psychology, History, black History, litterature, poetry...who would imagine that after x concert he was backstage reading Tagore and Rumi? Or in between concerts he could spend hrs totally absorbed by a book. This is what made me re consider him, because I've noticed that nothing was random with his art, and I could guess the second meanings in many instances.

What an annoyingly, cringey, unfunny intro skit that was.

@@colin1487 yeah, I can see that being the case now. Back when I (Russ) went to the show, it seemed very funny in the moment. It hasn't aged well though, I'll give you that.
