Do you have any suggestions for filling a lantern with fuel without spilling? The plastic funnel fits really snug and doesn't allow for air. I have a 242c, which was my dad's.

I recently acquired a 1971 Coleman 220F. It appears to have never been used. The box is in excellent condition, as are all of the literature which are in the original tan Coleman envelope. The paint and bright metal are like new, as is the pyrex glass. The only thing wrong that I can see is there are several tiny surface rust spots on the inner surface of the metal base the glass sits on, and it is missing the 2 mantles. Would you please tell me what this might be worth? THANK YOU!

Great video. You have a new subscriber! I have a 1955 200A that is in immaculate condition. It is my favorite. My father worked for Winchester and did a lot of hunting and camping in Montana, Idaho & Nebraska for Elk. I believe he went on a few pheasant hunts as well. I have his 200A from 1959 that was his favorite and went on most expeditions with him. It has its scratches and was definitely “used”, but it goes great with memories of all of the stories he told me about his many hunting adventures when i was just a little kid. The 200A is a beautiful lantern indeed.

You are exactly right about lanterns with fuel in the fount. Dry ones are more than likely rusty. Those with fuel have no rust but may have a small amount of varnish or something along those line, which can be easily removed with some carburetor cleaner. Always wash out a used lantern`s fount with brake cleaner or acetone, thoroughly dry, then fill with fresh fuel. Thanks for the great instructional video.

I just picked up a 220f from 1964 it has the sunrise globe. It was in rough shape had a mud wasp nest in it cleaner was sticking generator barely came off without damage. But I got her apart made sure it would hold Pressure . Turned the knob heard her hiss and then that amazing ignition sound. I can’t believe it runs as good as it does.

Remove the abspestos tube in the old lanterns generator and replace it with a rolled up piece of fine copper mesh (arts crafts stores) , and you can run unleaded, but it wont burn as bright.

You can use vm&p naphtha as a fuel source as it is very similar to white gas

How does a person safely depressurize a lantern? What if you lost count on the number of pumps and want to start over or your intent was to light the lantern but an emergency came up so you didn’t end up lighting it?
@VincentVader8 ай бұрын
You unscrew the pump & air will rush out.

Dang man! Great lantern collection!!! Just a suggestion, as I needed to do the same…run to Menards, Home Depot, or otherwise, and grab some 1/4” mdf, Masonite, or plywood, and throw it on top of those shelves. You’ll notice a great difference in the LACK of sagging!

Geat video, my favorite are the 200a’s also. I actually just converted one to kerosene, a well used 1974. The only drawback I see with them is the price of the original globes. I refuse to buy one that isn’t made here.

Question? Im in tx and found a good looking 200a. It is used. And he has several others. For the one in particular he wants 100 for it. Is this a crazy price or is it about right. Also has a silver double mantle says 1950s but needs a couple parts and wants 60. Interested in both but is prices close to right?
@Rpg39_11 ай бұрын
There isn’t anything wrong with burning unleaded in any Coleman product. I think all Coleman’s are dual fuel. I legitimately think the term dual fuel is just Coleman marketing. I’ve used unleaded a number of times and I can’t tell any difference.

What are the benefits of the three piece fuel cap? When you were unscrewing it, I saw the screw turning in while the cap was turning off. I'm guessing that the gasket was not turning while the cap was, which means less friction on the gasket as the fuel cap is cranked down? Does turning the screw a half turn in push the gasket forward allowing a better seal on an old, worn gasket?

It's been a couple years, and post covid inflation prices seemed to have affected lanterns, as well. While probably as plentiful as 220s, people seem to want to hold onto their 228s. And they're double to triple the price of a 220. I keep stumbling on cheap 220s and have a half dozen. Took me a while to find a 228 for sale, and it cost me way more than the $6 I spent on my last unfired 220.

Right now, propane is $4.59 for filling a 20 pound tank. Kerosene in one gallon jug is $30.00. Great vid. Made up my mind. Propane. Besides, a propane lantern is half the price of a dual fuel.

How do you know what size mantle your lamp uses. I just found an old 200a still in the box in really nice condition. I’ve been watching videos on how to repair them so I can take it apart and clean it up. I just thought they all used the same mantles. Also where is a good part source. Thank you.

I just picked up my first lantern at a flea market for 10 dollars .. a 286 made in 2000, never used, still in the box, with extra mantle also. I just have to ask because safety has been drilled into me from being a shipyard pipe welder for 40 years. Do you store those lanterns in your home with fuel in them? ... I am assuming that is your home, based on the rug, stairs, etc and not a shed. I read that to stop rusting, lanterns should be stored full to keep as much air as possible away from the metal interiors. ... that is a LOT of fuel to have in your house if those are all full? ... or do you keep them empty for weight and safety reasons?
