An impressive view of rhe John G Munson, outbound from Duluth, on a spectacular summer evening. The north shore was a nice background, as she departed.

@@1Long2Short Thank you! Grandpa worked at Manitowoc Shipbuilding for 44 years as a riveter. Of all the vessels he drove rivets on, wether repairs or new builds, the JOHN G. MUNSON was his favorite. It's a tribute to him and all of the men that built that beautiful boat, and she's still sailing today.
Sometimes I wish I could get a salute from her myself.

I believe these “dship carriers” are specialty cargo vessels named after musicians! Those arriving in Duluth often carry large elements of the enormous Wind Turbines built locally.
@1Long2ShortКүн бұрын
Yes, they are. In the video description, I noted that this ship appears to be named after Gwen Stefani.
@cris_261Күн бұрын
So Gwen is quick like Michipicoten, and versatile like Mark Barker. And a interesting looking ship as well. I like how the forward crane has a tower (pylon?) to rest its boom, while there's a pocket in the pilot house for the aft facing crane's boom. I gather the TUG markings with the arrow come in handy in all kinds of weather conditions. "Push here, not there." Great video, and I hope the Gwen comes back for another visit. Or maybe she already did, since she's such a zippy ship. 😄
@1Long2ShortКүн бұрын
The TUG marking does eliminate a lot of guesswork on the tug operators part, especially in ports where the tug operator and the ship's pilot may have different native languages!

This is another in a long series of videos that are just great. She's a zippy big ship, isn't she? And quite the snappy paint job too. I like to see the Salties, and I hope you're right that the extra youtube exposure is grabbing their attention. I love it that she has "TUG" written on her side...makes me wonder why that specific spot. I remember the video of the tug which was smashed up by a big ship's anchor because they were pushing her right under the anchor 'compartment'??? that can't be the right name for where the anchor is but oh well.!
@cris_261Күн бұрын
Perhaps the spots on the hull with the TUG markings are the best places for a tug assisted turn?
@oceansoul3694Күн бұрын
@@cris_261 now that never occurred to me. Thank you wise one!
@cris_261Күн бұрын
@oceansoul3694 Not really sure if I'm wise, lol. But thanks.😊 Maybe this is dship's way of making things safer (and more idiot proof) for tugs to provide assistance. After all, you're not going to help the ship turn if you're pushing in the middle! 😉

@@cris_261 🤣😂🥲😅🤭🤣
@1Long2ShortКүн бұрын
Thanks as always, Lisa! I suspect the "TUG" indication is written there for a couple of reasons. First, I think it's a portion of the ship that is best reinforced to take a load from a tug pushing on it. Second, it does help avoid things like the bow thruster and anchor. Just my guess, at least!

From Deb…Again, crazy gorgeous compositions! Subjects filling the frame and pointing the viewer into the picture, not out. Example: if you had the length of the pier pointing to and ending at the edge of the frame ( or edge of painting), your viewer’s eye would follow that pier right out of the shot. The right way…which you did… is to use the pier like an arrow to make the viewer’s eye land on your subject, boat or lighthouse or both. You are the composer. You control how to get the viewer’s eye to land on what’s most important about to you, the artist. Same with today’s gorgeous close- ups of the red boat turning in the bay. If you compose the shot that puts the ship in the center of the shot and it’s turning to the left, you drag the viewer’s eye off the page/ shot. Instead, as you did, you should shoot the boat on the right of the shot, turning toward the center. So you are keeping the viewer’s eye WITHIN THE FRAME. Also, I just LOVE how you are able to express to us how huge these ships are by photographing them close in. Because they fill up the frame, we get a better idea of how looming they are. Also, I can hear the sound of the boats pushing the water, which adds a lot. If I was teaching an art class right now, I promise I would take my iPad to class and use your videos to show how great composition makes great art! Can’t wait for the next one!
@1Long2ShortКүн бұрын
Thank you again Deb for your nice comments! I wish I could say I had all of these shots carefully planned in my head, but in reality I'm just winging it as I go along... trying to get the best composition I can for the scene in front of me. When I see a ship is moving fast like this one was, I'm just trying to keep up. Having said that, one of the things I really wanted to do with video was to show the massive size of these ships. I try to do that with a combination of close-ups, with the ship looming over you (like you said), but also have some wide shots to show their length. After doing this for several years, I'm still not completely satisfied I am showing on video what I see with my eyes. But it's fun to keep trying... and rewarding to be able to share the footage with others. Thanks again!
