It turns out that this song and the song after were the only two songs I liked on that album. If the disagreement between Billy Cobham and John McLaughlin was because of the song choices, I must totally agree that McLaughlin was in the wrong.

First time i heard of John was in art class when we were in Jr high and the art teacher would play music and he put on Right Off by miles davis and we had never heard anything like that having been brainwashed with the Doors, Led Zepphlin, Jimi hendrix, Beatles, TempTations, Supremes, and all the bubble gum music and the cartoons on tv like the Arhcies. This blew our minds and now we could play in bands cause now we saw the mix and HEARD the mix.

Can anyone explain to me what happened? As an original follower of the Mahavishnu orchestra it gave me such a thrill listening to the raw pure energy of the original band This on the other hand was another thing altogether after a couple of minutes I thought this emm weather report kind of thing was utterly different Sorry but the flame has gone out and the bird has flown off I know it’s excellent musicianship but to give credit to the original band I do think the name of this band should have not been the same Something like…. McLaughlin can't even play in tune. For all his pretentious pseudo spirituality all he has ever achieved is toneless, soulless speed drivel

I did travel to Montereux from Sweden just to hear Cobham on drums. When we arived we heard that he was replaced with Daniel Gottlieb. I was not happy at the time…

So this guy with the other worldly accent asks you to help him make selections for a 10-hour playlist of your most favorite jazz that you feel would be of interest to high-level musicalogists of distant realms where beings similar to us yet more advanced are largely unfamilier with 20th century jazz from Earth. You have to start with Miles Davis Kind of blue as the most successful jazz album and the Time Out... first jazz album to sell a million copies desite the fact that it was an album filled with odd time signatures. Each selection of those two iconic albums will occupy a slot on the 20 hour playlist. Can we agree that McLaughlin deserve at least three slots on that playlist? So here's my question: What are your three favorite McLaughlin tracks that deserve to be enjoyed by advanced civilizations across the universe? I know it's tough to narrow it down.

I play the bass guitar. At least that's what I call it. How can you play a guitar with three broken fingers on one hand and two broken fingers and a broken wrist on the other?Anyway I always watch the bass player and focus on his/her performance.Helborg is incredible in this lineup. You can hear every note he plays. A rarity! You can tell Miles Davis's influence from the start as each musician darts in and out from the main melody.

This is a pale shadow of its first 2 incarnations.

When John comes in for his first lead his guitar is smoking! That tone ! Sharp as a knife.

Это не Mahavishnu Orchestra. MO - это трое гениальных музыкантов, убежавших от посредственного гитариста в 1973, возомнившего себя их хозяином. Теперь он более-менее научился строгать, выпиливать, сверлить, набирает себе в свиту талантливых музыкантов. И всех называет своей кличкой "Mahavishnu". И вся слава снова достаётся ему, любимому. Данный коллектив безусловно прекрасен. Вполне мог обойтись без этого "гитариста". Правильно размазал его великий Frank Zappa ещё в 1973.

I was in Rotterdam for this concert. Jonas had hair on one side and none at the other. He played amazing. Broke a string on his bass on a Hendrix cover. Milos Forman also superb!. Oh man....was it with Cobham in Rotterdam?

I saw this tour at Festival Hall London. Already a big McLaughlin fan he walked on with a wireless guitar and played incredibly. It’s interesting here how much the material divides opinion. I feel if you replay and really listen you get it. 72 would not have made sense in 84. Everything had changed. Beautiful tunes and let’s here it for Jonas. Stunning musician.

Somewhere around 1980 it went wrong. Too much whining synth pop and a complete lack of ethnic instruments and Asian influence IMHO.

This sounds more like a tame Weather Report than Mahavishnu.

I worked in a steel mill where cats got tortured and metal beams crashed and clanked and fat union workers farted that sounded just like this concert.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra had a very distinctive sound that was more or less preserved, altho a little bit more produced/clinical, in its second iteration with Jean Luc Ponty and Narada Michael Walden but this, as great as it is, ain't that sound

I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra in Nice France in 1979....Billy Cobham on drums, Jeff Berlin on Bass, John Mac Laughlin on Guitar....

Yeah, it's Danny Gottlieb here, of course. I was listening to swiss radio station DRS that day, when they broadcast that show live. They promoted this exclusive broadcast already weeks before as "Premiere of Mahavishnu with Billy Cobham" (by the way, this band incarnation was just named Mahavishnu - not Orchestra). Then, about 1 hour before the show the radio announcer came up with some "important latest news". "Due to unknown circumstances Billy Cobham is not playing tonight. He will be replaced by former Pat Metheny drummer Danny Gottlieb. But the saddest thing about it is, that Warner Brothers changed their mind by only allowing the first 30 minutes to be broadcast", said the announcer. I mean these were really big events back then. When Weather Report was on tour in the mid 70ties, they were featured in the evening news! At least here in Europe. Those times are gone forever. Back to Mahavishnu. Billy once said that John even didn't fire him. He just didn't hear from John anymore at some point and was wondering what happened. On the other hand, there were rumors that he wanted an outrageously high fee. Maybe that's why he didn't hear from John anymore, who knows? But God thanks they shared stage again later.

The first two Mahavishnu Orchestra incarnations were stupendous. This is horrible elevator music.
