it's rare to find a Port cask even finished official Old Pulteney these days, so I think you had a great offer through your club...if not tried yet I do recommend the pre-rebranding 21 yo & mid-2000s batches of the 17 yo, just a great malt imho...They were also some great limited releases in the past such as the beautiful vintage 1991-2004 (15 yo) Cask strength French market exclusive I bought, and I tried the new range, its rather nice, but prices are a bit high (my preferences : the 15 yo & 18 yo). For a good value no brainer Bourbon cask driven profile, Toby I recommend you those from the "Flotilla" series...
@WhiskyShared14 күн бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. Old Pulteney has rather passed me by until now.
@GregsWhiskyGuide14 күн бұрын
@@WhiskyShared You're very welcome, sometimes batches of the 12 yo & others can be off putting due to a pronounced sweet & sour and almost musty note (bad quality corks in the previous branding, were also to blame...don't know if this has changed as I haven't bought any yet)
@GregsWhiskyGuide14 күн бұрын
Interesting, I didn't know they were also producing Rye whiskies...Your description reminds me a bit of Stork Club Rye (Germany) with all these ripe red fruits & not very spicy notes. I wonder what did you meant by French brandy though ? (as it means for me this is not Cognac or Armagnac otherwise you'll use the word) so Calvados, Cherry brandies ? other ?) but I kinda get the aromatic picture...maybe a too sweet one for me too (hence Jon's comment) ? Anyway thanks for covering rare (at least for us French) English whiskies (only know the Oxford Rye I was sent a sample a while ago). Cheers ! 🥃

They have been making the for some years. It reminded me a little of a cheap french brandy with some of the flavours.

Tasty is good, but yep, if I am going for a Rye, I am looking for spice. Cheers!

Exactly. I don't think this will appeal to your typical rye drinker.

Nice one Toby. I do like the Bladnoch core range, the ones I could afford, but I do get a lot of lactic funk with their spirit for some reason. The 11 is pretty good, especially the 2022 release as it's full ex-bourbon matured. Cheers!

Thanks. I'd definitely be interested to try some more from the range

Great review . I personally loved this summerton club bottling ( more than I do with the recent Sylrs bottle) but ill give that time . I'll have to buy another bottle of this port cask again at some point to see if it still hits the spot . It didn't last too long I must say haha compared to others i keep for a while and go back to .

Hah how funny we dropped the same whisky video on the same day 😅I quite enjoyed this whisky but not at 88pounds and I don't think I'll buy it again. It's a nice sweet dram that I don't have to think about that much but I'll certainly try more from Slyrs if I come across. There are three other German whiskies I tried; Evermann Black Forest was an interesting one, young but a lot of herbal influence. Stork Club Straight Rye was a very good example of a rye whisky I quite enjoyed and I tried St. Killian's One and Eight which were both a bit too young to enjoy. Cheers Toby 🥃

I wouldn't buy this at retail. I'll have to check out your review. I remember trying a St Killians once before.

Great pick from Summerton...I have 4 other expressions from them (I talked about them on my website but not much or say not enough on video, it seems I awe my viewers a full review of the 4) but noticed & loved this expression tasted at Whisky Live Paris, very fresh & different, while usually I'm not a fan of Amontillado finishes, I liked it. To answer your question, the core range flagship/classic is good, but not my favorite (too much new oak feel), while I liked the ones I have (Rum finish, Sherry Oloroso finish, Madeira finish...). I also recommend, if you like wine finishes, the "51" expression, a multi-cask types one, bottled at 51 % abv (4 different finishes)? I have tasted the 12 yo & the Marsala too, they're ok, but maybe not worth chasing price wise (I had the chance to meet a distributor here a while ago, in a more general show in which there was a discount for buying 3 bottles, so that is how I got the first 3...now alas the distribution changed hands & it's less easily available & expensive, I also recommend their new "Bavarian Peat" expression...For other German whiskies (I did a live show with Whisky Jason, once, mind you) maybe ask Jason & Luna, they know their stuff....German distilleries, like French ones, are hit or miss (the worst whisky of my collection came from there), but there is an interesting new wave there too...Among the most "current" probably in UK, check out St Kilian"s, Stork Club (Rye) or a more confidential one called Bosch (working with spelt instead of barley, I have a nice mini bottle I reviewed in a video about a whisky challenge with Andrew, I'll send you the link to it in your Insta if interested, Cheers !

I'm enjoying this bottle too and agree with you that it's good value at £50. I don't know if you've had Arran Bodega because I think that it has a very similar taste profile. The Arran for me is smoother and when you consider it's bottled at 55% and comes in under £60 I wouldn't pay retail price for the Slyrs. A good whisky though and I would like to try more from this distillery.
@WhiskySharedАй бұрын
I think I may have had a sample of the Arran some time ago and can't really remember it. I definitely would like to try other expressions from this distillery.

Nice one Toby! The oldest Adnams I tried was the TBWC 7 year old one and I quite enjoyed it. I also tried the 4 year old which again was pretty decent. I do enjoy English whisky in generals and I do love Adnams beers so there we go good for them. Cheers mate 🥃

Good summary of this Summerton Adnams whisky. Mine is held up in a queue and to complicate matters I cannot drink at present so will have to wait till the health problem recovers. Ps I listened at 1.5 speed. It came across very well.
