This is so frustrating. Something is up with my Quest 2 because IL2 looks like total garbage, shimmering and aliasing is so bad I can't even play it. For some reason, my Pixels Per Display Override doesn't seem to be working. I followed your tutorial several times, restarted the service, but when I go into steam VR, it never shows the same resolution that you're seeing. Right now I have it set to 1.2x in the debug tool, and steam VR is showing 1692x1708 @ 82%, wtf? Honestly, I've been sitting in IL2 and changing the override from the debug tool 1.0 to 2.0 and I can't see any difference at all. My menus on the Quest 2 look beautiful, anytime I fire up Steam VR it looks like trash, like im seeing 1024x768 per eye or something.
@maddabbo2 жыл бұрын
So there are 3 places to set the resolution and they all effect the final resolution. In the oculus software you can set a value that adjusts res. I suggest setting this to 1x which is default. Then in the pixel override that is where it is set to something above one 1.2 is fine to try. As you change that you should see it change the as you modify it. The grid in the background is a good place to see it working. Set it to 2.0 and you'll see the background looks awesome. Then set it to 1.0 and you'll see the grid looks much worse. Try 1.2. You can change the pixel override on the fly and all you need to restart is steamVR after you change it. You can NOT change it while steamVR is running!! you must quit steamVR change the pixel override and relaunch steamVR for every change. SteamVR is the 3rd place to effect resolution. I suggest setting steamVR to 100% and with Oculus set to 1x this allows you to only use pixel override to control the resolution. Not that you should set the bottom settings first and after setting restart oculus server. encode res width 3696 and bitrate 250 Then restart debug tool and set pixel override to your test value. Then run steamVR with 100% set and let us know what it says the resolution is. If it's only 1600x1700 close steamVR after setting it to 100% not 82% and bump up pixel override value and restart steamVR and look at res again. Let me know what you get for value after trying in that order. You should also look into using FSR scaling but as it helps things look much better and gives better frame rates but I'll need to make a video for that after xmas, no time right now. You can search the forum for info.

Hey I appreciate the tutorial. I can’t seem to get IL2 to run in VR. It runs but only in the desktop not in the headset. It shows as 2 screens in the desktop like it’s trying to go VR but won’t. Also this was extremely confusing to me. You jumped all over the place & I got lost watching. Do you think you could do it again but in a more step by step approach? I’d appreciate it! Thanks & if you have any ideas as to why IL2 won’t go VR I’d appreciate the help or ideas. Thanks!
@maddabbo2 жыл бұрын
I won't have time to redo it any time soon sorry. I suspect you are stuck in the headset viewing the desktop as the game starts and not switching to the game. In VR you can switch back and forth between games and the desktop to control things. It sounds like your stuck in the desktop and don't know how to switch to the game. If memory serves correct it's the left hand controller joystick pressed in that switches to the steam vr desktop and back. Not sure if that will help. Maybe play the video a few times to catch it all?

So it can be good enough that I can see between the degree ticks on the top left of compass on P-51. It's not as good as the clarity on the HP Reverb G2 but approaches it at least to 90% but needs a power PC and graphics card to drive the over sampling to make it look that good. 3080 to 3090 needed to really get the most out of it. At that price point for SIM the Reverb is much better and worth it or consider the Vive Pro V2. I like the Reverb G2. But if you want a does everything well almost as good and you have a powerful PC then the quest 2 can look pretty good. You lose about 5fps to the Reverb G2 just in Quest 2 overhead and it's not as sharp. But it can look really good.
@maddabbo2 жыл бұрын
If you want to see how good it can look set it to super high settings that result in low frame rates and look at image for quality not smoothness and back off from there. I now have a 3090 and it can look really good the Reverb G2 looks awesome. Neither can be driven to full 90FPS at full res needed to get the most out of them. I run the Reverb G2 at about 2700 pixels per eye and scale it up 300% using FRS scaling. That scaling came out after I made the Quest videos. That scaling should work for the Oculus also.

thanks for your IL 2 Setup, good content! just bought myself a Quest 2 and making my first steps in VR right now. There still are quite a lot of questions though. Maybe you can help... 1. Why do you fix the res to 3696? is this related to the quest 2 or does it have to do with other part of your hardware? 2. Can you guide me on the two green numbers in the upper right when I am ingame? When turning the pixel overide to 1.5000 I have solid numbers of 71 and 97 ingame. is 71 the FPS? This dows not move and I think this has to do with my desired max FPS of 144. is this correct? What is 97? 3. Maybe I had to high expectations of a VR headset but image isnt sharp enough to enjoy. It is abt 60-70% of sharpness what I see on my monitor. Is this how VR actually is?! ;) Am just afraid to ruin my eyes. Would be pleased to hear and thanks in advance!
@maddabbo3 жыл бұрын
3696 is i think = to 2x is close to 2x in pixel override? When I went above 4000 I got artifacts. 3696 seemed to be very good quality and it didn't impact my performance on a 1080ti to run it at 3696. The top number is fps the bottom is FOV. If you zoom the bottom number will change. 72 is max fps of quest by default you can make it go as higher but for PC VR I wouldn't recommend going higher unless you have a very powerful computer. If you are maxing 72 fps you can up the settings in game details to your liking and then balance fps with pixel override which sets your quest 2 resolution. I don't think the quest 2 goes to 144hz. It tops at 120 I think I don't run above 90 gennerally in stand alone mode. I run 72 for PC games but I don't use it often as I have an HP G2 also. I've been meaning to try some games with wireless standup but been lazy. It's not blurry for me with the settings in video and a 1.5 pixel override should look good. Remember to restart the oculus service after changing lower settings. Also there is a very narrow sweet spot for focus vertically. And if you wear glasses that sweet spot is harder to find if at all.
@Dozerboy843 жыл бұрын
@@maddabbo thanks your quick reply! I am running a 3070, do you think this has an influence to take also 3696? of course I can try but it is still difficult to see the changes in VR as a beginner… regarding your other advice will crank up the settings in IL2 and take the last fps with pixel overide to end up at about 50fps 🤔 Was also looking for the Reverb G2 and thinking about buying it when the V2 is on the market. Are you using both headsets for IL2? If I am not wrong the G2 would be a better solution for sims….
@maddabbo3 жыл бұрын
@@Dozerboy84 I use the reverb for sims and the oculus for everything else Excersize, vr roomspace, and sometimes backup for sims. Reverb is better for sims. I believe all G2 sold in US are now v2 versions of G2. Mine is out for repair so I may end up in oculus a bit soon. I now have a 3090. The 3696 is one the the biggest things you can do to improve sharpness but requires restart of oculus services to see it take work. If you set it and start game it wont work. You need to set it. Restart services or restart computer and check that it is still set. Then set other things and try game. 1.5 should be sharp with 3696. You can approach 4000 but at 4000 I had issues. Slightly below as okay. 3696 seemed pretty high as you are not running the headset res that high so it's a very high buffer that is being scaled down. It doesn't seem to hurt performance that high in my testing.
