Space Coupe started in 1963 so had the Mach5 designers known in the 1980’s about the SC they may have copied some the design features but I doubt that ever happened.

@@BarryGremillion "Speed Racer" premiered in June, 1966, so would have been in production before that. I'm sure the Space Coupe made it into magazines and may very well have influenced the Mach 5 early on. 👍

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?

I understand. Working with Johnny was one of the highlights of my 40+ year career in film production. He was a delight and I was fortunate to spend so much time with him. Months we spent prepping before we ever started filming, drinking beers in the pool of a desert hotel, in the van for hours, for days scouting locations. It was hot as hell but it was a blast.

It's a trip. These days, late 70's early 80's were chockablock with adventures and characters and these many years later - decades actually - to be in touch with fellow artists from that time is encouraging. Thanks for asking

How did they originally make the bubbled glass of some of the old classic cars? Were they never made of glass? Was it always a form of plexiglass?
@BarryGremillion Жыл бұрын
Hey David - they were made of plexiglass. Compared to the modern technology we have today to create these bubbles, back in the day - the 1960's they had to make due - Darryl Starbird told me and showed me some of the grass roots techniques they used - and he was the king of bubble tops.

Thanks for interviewing Daryl and Gene. I remember seeing their cars in the car magazines in the early 60s, and wanting to do something similar. Best of luck with the Space Coupe.
@kimstrickland652 жыл бұрын
Clearly a labor of love, and a great testimony to the greatest era in car customizing, using the techniques used at the time. When I was a kid in the early 60s, the Silhouette was my favorite custom, and I carefully built the plastic model. I only became aware of the Space Coupe much later, in the early 2000s, when I was using the internet to see what happened to some of the things I cared about when I was a kid. It is amazing that you were able to notice the Space Coupe components so long after it went missing. Now if you or someone else could find out what happened to the Silhouette since it was stolen in the early 80s.

We call them bat wing doors as gull wings hinge from the roof while these totally unique doors hinge behind the drivers head and when they close they wrap around the cockpit. Updates are on IG #projectspacecoupe
