It would have been a sporting CRIME to end this race any other way. The real problem here was that the lapped cars could have EASILY and SAFELY been allowed to unlap themselves a lap or two earlier. That didn't happen likely because Toto and Christian were bombarding Masi on the radio. It should have happened, and the result would have been exactly the same. Masi corrected that minor mistake. Mercedes chose not to pit for new tires. Didn't want to take the risk of losing track position. They lost due to bad strategy. Oh, and the biggest ACTUAL rule violation was on lap one, when Lewis left the track from P2, and ended up in P1. He clearly gained an advantage by exceeding track limits and did not give the position back. Insane call by the stewards. Masi should have corrected it.

Max and lewis deserved it equally, Lewis deserved it on the day so lewis should have won, both would've been worthy winners.

80% of F1 fans wanted Max to win. 100% of the other drivers wanted Max to win. Max had won more races leading up to the final race. He had more pole positions. He had nearly double the number of laps led throughout the season. And that's all including the travesties at Silverstone and Hungary, where Mercedes took Max out. Plus, Max crossed the line first in Abu Dhabi. Masi's only mistake was that he didn't let lapped cars unlap themselves on the previous lap. He corrected that error as best as he could while fulfilling the gentleman's agreement among drivers and teams that he wouldn't end races under the safety car if at all possible. The drivers and teams literally asked Masi to avoid ending races under safety car. If the lapped cars remained between Lewis and Max at the restart, they would have been shown blue flags and would have been obligated to get out of Max's way (and they would have done so immediately). Plus the rules clearly state that the race director can run the race at his discretion. Is there anything else you'd like to know? Yeah, we estimated that at least 70% to 80% of the people in attendance were Max supporters. At our seats we actually happened to be sitting in a little cluster of people who appeared to be Lewis fans, with the British flags and Mercedes hats, and a couple of guys sitting behind us cheering for Lewis. But it was clear that Max had an unbelievable amount of support. Very cool atmosphere, and a stunning finish. 💥

Well, to be fair most people in the stands had no clue what was happening with Masi and the safety car. Even the live timing server went down with 10 laps to go, so we couldn't even see track positions or gaps in the F1 app anymore. I'm sure some people were listening to broadcasts, but we were not. I'd say a solid 20% to 30% of live spectators likely agree with your assessment. The other 70% to 80% seemed thrilled with the result. Tough situation. In the end, it really comes down to Checo making it so Lewis didn't have a safe window for pitting under the VSC or the subsequent SC. When Max says he won because of Checo, this is what he means. 🏁
