Oh dear what a shame - the first answer given is incorrect. It was an SS100, or Swallow Sidecars 100. The company was happy using the SS name until after the war when the SS had assumed unfortunate connotations as a result of that major kerfuffle. William Lyons wanted to change the company name to Jaguar but he was aware that Armstrong Siddeley Motors made an aircraft engine of that name. He therefore politely asked J.D.Siddeley if he would mind SS cars changing to that name. Siddeley saw no particular conflict of interest between sports cars and aero engines - so he agreed.

Corvette may have started in the 50's but that first one was a 61.
